When in the tomb

Have you ever felt imprisoned in a tomb? I’m not thinking of a cave in rock, but of a mental place, perhaps one of hopelessness, despair, poverty, addiction, debt, conflict, disease, sin and any other type of mortal darkness and emptiness that tempts you to give up hope of being free again.

If so, there’s a way out! Jesus Christ has showed us the exit door. Freedom comes from understanding existence in Spirit, not in matter.

World chaos and strife may seem to throw your human experience into a tomb of hopelessness and despair, but your thinking doesn’t have to follow. World events do not control your thinking. You do, and you can stay with Truth no matter what direction mortal mind wants to pull your attention.

I find insight into demonstrating this dominion in studying how Jesus dealt with his tomb experience.

Mary Baker Eddy wrote in Science and Health,

“His disciples believed Jesus to be dead while he was hidden in the sepulchre, whereas he was alive, demonstrating within the narrow tomb the power of Spirit to overrule mortal, material sense. There were rock-ribbed walls in the way, and a great stone must be rolled from the cave’s mouth; but Jesus vanquished every material obstacle, overcame every law of matter, and stepped forth from his gloomy resting-place, crowned with the glory of a sublime success, an everlasting victory.”

Human hands placed Jesus’ physical body in the tomb, but human experience did not lock his thinking in there. Jesus kept his thinking out of the tomb. He did not follow what the rest of the world thought about him into that grave. He stayed conscious of spiritual truth. He kept working out the problem of being, understanding his life in Spirit better. And that increased understanding enabled him to lift his physical concept of body off the stone slab three days later, roll the stone away and show himself triumphant to a world that thought he was long gone.

We can do the same!

No matter what tomb mortal mind has thrown you into today, whether it’s a financial, relationship, health, or life threatening circumstance; don’t let your thinking stay in the cave. Don’t stay where mortal mind wants you to remain. Refuse to cooperate! God is your Life. God is your supply. God is your health, unfailing love and support. You have what you need coming from God to triumph over any claim of lack.

So, if facing a tomb experience, have no fear. Remember, you are not locked up there. A material circumstance no matter how dire does not grip your thinking. You can always pray, think spiritually and demonstrate immortal truth. That is how you get back on your feet, roll any foreboding stone away, and get back out into circulation where you can prove all is well under God’s harmonious control.

When in the tomb, don’t stay in the tomb. Think and pray your way out. Truth is at work on your behalf ensuring you succeed.

  1. This is very helpful! Thank you very much indeed, Evan.
Many sorts of “grave”-experience are sometimes not recognized as such (i.e. poverty, depression and the like).
It’s good to be reminded of the fact that man is not singled out and not cast out of good but included in Life’s universe. What about the ‘evidences to the contrary’ ? Well, it’s like you said: ‘You can always pray, think spiritually and demonstrate immortal truth.’

  2. Thank you Evan. This is very helpful. A family member, within the next week, could lose their home if something doesn’t happen. They recently, finally, got a job, but it’s not enough to cover the bills. I have been praying about this and helping them to understand what we know in C.S. They’re really having a heard time. I will share what you wrote with them. Thanks again!

  3. Thanks so much, Evan! It is like a mini treatment, as a former commenter said. It raises my expectation to make the demonstration that I need today!
