  1. In this new Century, money is thought to bring about the greatest happiness. But it hasn’t, instead it brought the greatest misery. But are humans ready to admit this? Of course not, humans are so ever tempted by the wrong than ever before in human history for humans are more willing to rely on words ending with ISM than Love and caring for others.

  2. I don’t think its money that has brought about great unhappiness, but the love and pursuit of it as a means to happiness. Trying to find substance where there is no true substance can leave one feeling empty handed in the end. Go for the real stuff–the riches of Spirit! And you’ll find true happiness. Money is fine. We need to pay our bills. But God is the source of all that truly pleases and satisfies.

  3. Good point, Evan! I’ve been thinking lately about what Mrs. Eddy meant when she wrote: “Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love.” I’m getting that true Happiness, Satisfaction and Contentment come from knowing the Truth of Who We Really Are, and Who Everyone Else Really Is…….and then feeling the Love that comes from knowing we are All God’s Beloved Children and letting Ourselves bask in that Love and letting the Love Flow Out to Others.

  4. As a beloved Christian Scientist, John Peterson, put it..”joy comes from love”, as also mentioned above. That has stuck with me since I first heard it many years ago and it helps me when sadness tries to creep in. Reminds me to get actively loving my fellow man and God. <3

  5. I have often found that doing for others, even making a cup of tea, helps to align myself with the truth; a little mental break from the hypnotism.
Getting your attention off yourself and onto to others and the activity of good is the best tonic.

  6. I like that you wrote, Evan, that money is fine. It’s rather practical in the current environment, smile! I’m grateful that Christian Science doesn’t teach that poverty is somehow noble. I think Christian Scientists (as well as all mankind) should have lives representative of their excellent thinking: abundance of good which includes not necessarily the abundance of things, but the abundance of all things good! Abundance can be shared too!

  7. I used to (still do sometimes!) get confused with the mortal concept of “good deeds” but here am reminded that there is no absence of love, life, intelligence or substance – period! – and of the lesson from Emma Curtis Hopkins that “Prosperity is the acknowledgement, either consciously or unconsciously, of the presence of God” ..(Good). “He who is prosperous has eliminated from his mind some idea which the one who is seemingly not prosperous”.. (that is, not practicing the presence of God – Good).. still holds on to with tenacity.” and always the omnipotence of Infinite Joy is reflected in the expression of its eternal ideas.

  8. Yes of course doing things for others does bring you great joy and takes thought away from self. A person who is always busy serving others and thinking about another’s happiness, seldom suffers from sadness or depression.
But Evan I have also observed, that at times people and even our friends at times, take advantage of our kind deeds and loving and forgiving nature, by disrespecting you and treating you shabily. That seems unfair to me and I feel how can someone punish me for being good.

    1. Hi Nergish,

You ask a good question, but look at the life of Jesus. He was treated shabbily frequently for all the good he did. So, you can’t go by what others do. You must decide what to do between you and God. What is the morally and spiritually right actions to take? Jesus also taught us not to throw our pearls before the swinish thought. So he did teach us to make wise decisions about where to share our charity. So, be wise, but be loving too.

  9. ebcThank-you for your wonderful article. I help my daughter by taking care of her 3 children.,and I sometimes like Iam not doing enough to make a difference in the world. But I can see now that all the moments I spend taking good care them is making a diffference because Iam giving with unconditional love.
