See bills as patients

August 19, 2016 | 21 comments

A friend who is struggling with too much debt and no money to pay bills, reported to me how she opened her mailbox that day, saw another bill she could not pay, and exclaimed, “OH NO, NOT ANOTHER ONE!”

In listening for inspiration to help her see her way to abundance, I said, “Instead of seeing those bills as evil weighing you down, see them as opportunities to give Christian Science treatment and prove they can be paid.”

I thought about my workday as a Christian Science practitioner. All day long, people email and call me with their problems. If the phone rang, and I thought, “Oh no, not another one,” I would be ineffective to help them. Their problems would start to overwhelm me and I would be no better off than them. But I don’t fear their calls. I look forward to them. I see them as opportunities to prove God’s love and care at work on their behalf.

I realized that bills coming into my friend’s mailbox was similar to patients sending reports of sickness and suffering to my inbox. Each were opportunities to prove the truth of being that God’s help was present to meet the need.

I said to my friend above, “See those bills as patients calling upon your practice of Christian Science. Don’t dread them, but love them and apply God’s law of abundance to them. See the presence of supply right where they scream lack and prove that you have everything you need to demonstrate supply and move on.”

Bills should not be seen as an occasion to despair, but to pray, for prayer is what opens thought to the means for paying that bill. Side with God and let the infinite resources of divine Mind help you out. Paying the bills will be much easier.

  1. Thank you Evan. That’s a great way to think about any challenge we may be facing…i.e. as a signal to learn more about God and His idea…or to discover the truth that exists right where the challenge appears to exist.

I was just reflecting on the following statement from page 494 of Science and Health:

    Divine Love

    — always has met

    … and …

    — always will meet

    every human need.

I’ve read this statement hundreds of times, but this time I read it the “always has met” stood out to me. It occurred to me that in thinking about my past I’ve often entertained the idea that there have been times that my human need has not been met. But if this statement is true, then I’m wrong in thinking there was ever a time my human need was not met. Wow! Similarly, any fear that my need won’t be met in the future is neutralized by this simple statement of truth.

But how do we make this practical? Doesn’t the “action” of making this practical all take place in thought? By simply holding to the truth, in thought, that God loves us and therefore gladly supplies our every need is how we make this practical. Holding to it in thought….Understanding it…Refusing to allow any belief contrary to this truth space in our thinking is how we make it practical. And by so doing we will discern, at the appropriate time, God’s angel messages guiding us as to the next step to take humanly. Why? Because God is not only Love…God is also Mind…the source of all right ideas!

  2. What a wonderful concept! I’m truly grateful that I opened my mail early today. Thank you, Evan. And Brian, listing one of our most loved statements as you did certainly gives it a new hue.

  3. Awesome! I’d been looking for a vacation rental at the beach for a final summer get away. Turns out everyone has the same idea and nothing was a available. My husband had requested the time off earlier with the anticipation of going but I’d proocrastined in reserving a rental and now it was not looking good. To make a long story short….a rental became available and the owner was so grateful we took it because the income met some immediate and unexpected bills, including repairs for a “silly auto accident”.

I’d never thought of the person or company sending the bill as a patient, but I love the thought and will make it a practice to do so.

    Thank you all!

  4. Wow! What a great LIFT in thought! Perfect timing, too! Today I even LOOK FORWARD to facing that talk stack sitting on my desk! You’ve inspired a real game changer (again!) for me! My Most heartfelt thanks, Dear Evan!

  5. As a follow on to Brian’s wonderful statement out of Science and Health ‘meeting every human need’ meeting both the payer and the payee. Under God government no one is left out, everyone is touched according to their need. Another great post Evan and excellent comments Brian and all.

  6. This is great. It helps me to understand that I don’t have to face each day with a “What next” attitude because what is next is going to be an opportunity to see God’s love in action. In the words from the Bible,”Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?” I love the idea of being a witness to the work God is doing. And thank you Evan for your generous sharing of these deep spiritual insights.

  7. Thank you so much Evan. Another inspiring and uplifting post. I’ve always viewed money
as an expression of gratitude. When I need a product or service, money is the expression of my gratitude. As you know, we can never run out of gratitude.

  8. John, I just love your idea that money is an expression of gratitude – a fresh perspective – thanks!

  9. Thank you Evan. Wonderful insights. Recently, I have been trying to see from a spiritual viewpoint. Instead of seeing the material “mental picture”, I endeavor to see the “true idea” about everything, If you have faith, a confident expectancy in the reality of the true idea, it will become manifest. It even works on teenagers. Wow.

  10. thanks, Evan! Christian Science teaches us how to have a New View of Life, God, Ourselves and Others…..the True Spiritual View! When we are willing to change the base of our thought from the mortal way of looking at everything (the way of seeing only mortals, matter, and material things) and let the Christ or Truth taught by Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy transform our way of thinking, we actually start seeing everything as “metaphysical” or as ideas and then we can exchange the objects of sense testimony for the true ideas of Soul! And Healing Happens!

  11. I love this thought Evan, bills as a new patient. Years ago in college, funds seem so tight. When I felt especially broke, I loved paying my bills.
There was so much to be grateful for, Another month with a roof over our heads, and we had electricity and gasoline for the car, new shoes for my kids, food for all our meals and so on. I always felt abundantly rich, I had so much. Though new to Science, I know now that the gratitude to God for all our blessings opened me to having all I needed. Love has always met my needs and thank you Brian for pointing out Love will continue to meet all my needs. So much gratitude and love for everyone in this community in Spiritview.

  12. I love paying bills because I know that I am doing good to ithers. I am passing along part of God’s infinite provision to me. It is a joy. Thanks to all.

  13. I choose to live by God’s grace. I know God guides, guards and governs all the events in my life. God knows what I need and I live by His grace!
