The Great I AM

August 16, 2016 | 36 comments

When Moses was learning more about God’s immediate power and might to free the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, God revealed Himself to Moses as the great “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14, NLT). Inspired by this higher view of the divine presence, Moses proceeded to change world events with his newfound understanding that God was always with him and working through him.

Similarly, each of us can gain from understanding our relationship to the Great I AM better, for in it we find inseparability from God.

God is the I and man is the AM. As a child of God, you are the AM!

There is healing in the depth of these words.

God declares:

I AM all

I AM good

I AM all power

I AM Life

I AM Mind

I AM Spirit

I AM control

I AM perfect

As God’s reflection, your true state of being declares:

I AM all good

I AM God in action

I AM alive

I AM intelligent

I AM spiritual

I AM under control

I AM safe

I AM well

I AM protected

I AM provided for

I AM healthy

I AM strong

I AM able

I AM okay

I AM worthy

I AM loved

I AM perfect

And you could go on and on with what you are as the AM of God’s I.

The I of God and the AM of your being is as close as a circle is to round. They are forever united and coexistent as one.

There is never a moment when you are separated from the I of God.

You are God’s presence. You are God expressed. You are God’s being in action.

Any sense of separation from God is not the AM, and is not you.

You are the AM of God, and God is the I of you.

  1. Oh, Evan, so simple, so powerful, so beautiful, and complete. I love it!! Thank you so much for this powerful, far reaching inspiration!!

  2. Dear Evan, thank you so much for this great lesson – thats food for today and ever, blessing and healing! You are a wonderful teacher of CS.
    Have a great day everybody.

  3. Evan, this is simply wonderful! Thank you! How carelessly I often use the word AM. I am this and I am that! What a wake up call your article is! To correctly define ourselves as the AM of I AM insists that we are like the I, that we are good, gracious, spiritual, kind, loving, whole, well! Boy, am I going to watch how I use that phrase “I am” today! 🙂

  4. Such great insight in which to start my day I hope you are aware of t he gift your blog is for those of us who can’t use a practitioner due to having to resort to the medical. Bless you.

  5. Love this prayer— I AM. It reminds each one of us how close we are to our Father/Mother–no separation, but worthiness, loved and included in His/Her love forever!
    Complete! Awesome and simple.

  6. Hi Evan! Thank you for the clarity of The Great I AM! Sometimes it’s really, really hard to really believe and know that i am the AM of the I! Wow! Really? How come we aren’t told this at the beginning of our lives, or even before human birth? How do we get this Truth deep into our consciousness so that it becomes “bone of our bones”…..??? Is this the whole purpose of LIFE? To find this out and to demonstrate it? Hmmmmm….maybe that’s what Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy and the Bible and Science & Health are trying to tell us…….??!!! Is it called “Enlightenment”???? Doin’ my Best to imbibe this! Love to All!

  7. A very powerful and healing insight, Evan, thank you! I’ll be praying with this for “me, and mine, and all” (from MBE’s poem and Hymn 207). Thanks, too, for the generous sharing of SpiritView, your many lectures, articles, prayers, etc. – bringing healing and blessing to all.

  8. Bless you for this inspiration. Now the I AM will forever bring this new understanding to mind each time it appears. It is such a beautiful and practical way to grasp co-existence. Thank you so much Evan.

  9. Thank you for another “keeper”. I printed it out so I can be reminded of who I am. Some time back you had another one I printed out about how every time we begin to say “I am” something or other….make sure it is something positive and not negative…like “I am looking forward to good things happening today” This one has even more “I am’s” So together, I will have one whale of a list of who I am. 🙂

  10. Thank you for this on going treatment. listening, trusting, and understanding even in a degree gives us something to hang our hat on and not to be discouraged.

  11. “God. The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence.”

~From Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, Pg. 585

Thank you for expanding upon Mrs. Eddy’s insightful statement, above.

The one true Mind, OUR MIND, is…..awe-inspiring.

  12. Thank you, Evan for this insightful lesson. Will you give explanation to # 7 response, i.e., Nan’s statement. That has never been clear to me, whatever needs to be healed is materiality, whether it is sickness, sin, or medical aid. Your clarification will be much appreciated.

    1. Per Nan’s response, I think there is a lot of confusion about the issue she mentions. Anyone can use a practitioner if they want to grow spiritually and seek out Christian Science healing.

It’s important to understand that there is a difference between medical treatment and Christian Science treatment. When a patient takes a medicine, they are thinking, “This material pill is going to heal me.”

When a patient requests CS treatment, the practitioner is going to treat their thought metaphysically with spiritual truth that enables them to feel the healing power and presence of Spirit taking their thought, and thus experience, to a better place. But if the patient is consciously thinking something material is going to heal them, they are resisting the metaphysical treatment, either consciously or unconsciously. They will benefit when they turn their mental attention from the physical to the spiritual.

So, this is what is important to understand. If a patient on medicine sincerely wants to be healed spiritually, the practitioner can help them make that transition. It needs to be done through inspiration and spiritual growth, not through human will or blind faith.

  13. Thank you, dear Evan! Another keeper to print out, study and use daily. What a wonderful reminder of how close we are to God. So reassuring to understand how much He loves each one of us. We lack nothing if we practice the AM in I AM. VERY thought provoking and a powerful message to try to use second by second. Thank you!!!!!

  14. Thanks for such a beautiful clarification of how and why anyone can seek the help and experience of a Christian Science practitioner. Many practitioners are happy to prayerfully support the sincere desire to be healed spiritually. It is a wonderful way to grow, to feel and experience divine Love’s immediate presence and blessing, through inspiration and progress under whatever circumstance.

  15. Thanks so much Evan and everyone who is commented. And thanks also, Evan, for your clarification of what calling on a Christian Science practitioner for help entails.

  16. Evan, so simple, so powerful, so beautiful, and complete as was stated above. Another keeper that will always make me think before using the words “I AM”. I love it!!

  17. Thanks, Evan, and everyone. I love MBE’s definition of GOD, and often, if I awake during the night, will ponder it. I think to myself if God is the “all-seeing, all-acting…” that He is the ONLY one that sees, acts, etc., and as His child each one of us reflects that. We can only see, etc., what God sees—only good. It’s always been helpful to me.

  18. Evan, I must give another grateful comment – thank you very much indeed for your very clear explanation of the difference what a medical treatment is and what a Christian Science treatment is, so lovely and at the point!
And thank you Daphne, your inspiring statement of the reflection of Gods seeing also helps me; I could add: Gods hearing, doing – all Gods qualities are reflected by us all – thats what Evan showed us in todays SpiritView – we can do nothing whithout God, because we are one with Him through the “IAM” – wonderful clear idea.

  19. Perfect interpretation of I AM! Thank you so much for continuing to clarify and bless all of us in your blog.

  20. Dear Evan, thank you so very much for your clear answer to the question as to whether a practitioner may render spiritual aid to one who at the time of call has been dependent upon medical assistance. With gratitude, Sunshine and the many others listening for the voice of Love.

  21. Beautiful. I really needed this today, still working through everything from my husband’s passing. This morning was a little rough, but your message has brought love and peace. Thank you, Evan.

  22. Thank you so much
The human claim is that I have a disease but I find your posts remind me that it is not so
When there is a claim of confusion which suggests it is so your lovely posts put me back in reality .thank you
