Hold the right thought

February 21, 2017 | 20 comments

The word “never” arrested my attention in this quote from Mary Baker Eddy:

“One should never hold in mind the thought of disease, but should efface from thought all forms and types of disease, both for one’s own sake and for that of the patient” Science and Health, p. 396.

It’s a high demand! To never hold disease in thought.

With the barrage of media ads pressing people to believe that disease is real, when friends describe their latest illness in detail, when neighbors are suffering from disease, it can be challenging to keep images of disease out of our thinking. But it’s critical to maintaining good health. And it’s doable when we understand the spiritual facts of being.

God is All, and God is good. There is no evil in God’s creation. There is no disease in God, and there is no disease, ever, in God’s manifestation, you and me and every neighbor as a child of God in Spirit. This is reality, and is the truth to know when thinking about ourselves, our friends and neighbors.

Disease is a lie about God’s creation. Disease is a lie about our neighbor and our friends when they are suffering. It is a lie to be conquered with spiritual truth, and the more we weigh in with spiritual truth, and less with fear, the more helpful we are to them and to ourselves.

It takes mental watchfulness to keep all disease out of consciousness, but again, it’s doable.

Chances are, you practice successful watchfulness in many other areas of your life. If you own a home, you watch to keep the front door locked and to keep burglars out. You do this constantly, night and day, and for good reason.

You likely watch your step when you walk down the street to not trip and fall. If you have young children and care about their well-being, you constantly watch to be sure they’re safe.

Most of us are very good at watching.

So, practice the same watchfulness with your state of mind. Refuse to let any thought dwell in your consciousness that is not in your best interest to entertain. Kick out all images, concerns, or fears per disease. Allow none of it, ever.

Cling to Life. Know Life in God, Life in Spirit, where health is a fixed permanent condition and is never lost.

You are a spiritual being. You are a glorious spiritual being, rife with spirituality that is immune to all disease. A spiritual idea of God knows nothing of disease.

It’s a joy to entertain the spiritual truth about God and man. It’s not hard to do. It’s healing, helpful, beneficial and wise to know that God is all good, and that you are all good, and that good is all there is to think about.

You don’t have to think about disease. It’s not an obligation. It’s not necessary. It’s not mandatory.

You have God-given dominion to think on the good and the true and to stay safe within it.

  1. Thank you Evan, for me this is ongoing, and the challenge is real for me right now. I know that GOD IS EVERYTHING but everyday I see Error trying to make itself seen, and every moment I am clinging to the TRUTH.

  2. Evan, this is SO good. I love your statement that disease is not mandatory or an obligation. We are taught from day one that disease is just part of our experience, certain diseases for certain ages or stages. How liberating to know that as you say, there is no disease in God (how could that be?) therefore there is no disease in His expression, us! We are educated in the illusion that disease is natural. Absolutely not! Health is the natural state of man. But, we have to affirm and understand that to keep our thought free of the constant barrage of media/world thought that presents disease as omnipresent. This article is such a clear roadmap to understanding the naturalness of health. Thanks, Evan!

  3. “One should never hold in mind the thought of disease, but should efface from thought all forms and types of disease. . .” Science and Health, p. 396.

    Well, this is thought arresting!

Thank you for shining the light on this.

Makes me consider that I should also efface from thought all forms and types of fear, ignorance and sin, knowing that man’s Soul is Father/Mother Love, all-powerful and ever-present; that the one Mind of man is all-knowing intelligence, understanding, comprehending the universe; that all-loving Spirit alone is the substance of man, limitless and eternally pure.

    Sweet knowing!!

  4. Thank you so much, Evan, for this! And to Nikki, above…… I, We, All of Us are holding you in Love and Truth today and seeing and knowing You only as one of God’s precious spiritual ideas. Much Love To You!

  5. Great thoughts to ponder, Evan and commenters ~ Thank you! I think we can also look at disease as being dis ease, or not “at ease” with something. This could pertain to the world, also, which seems to be in such turmoil these days. We need to let the perfection of God’s peace shine into our hearts and resist anything that would cause us to not be in harmony with our True being.

  6. Excellent loving reminder, Evan. Thank you.

What comes to thought is a truth Mrs. Eddy
wrote in her book, Miscellaneous Writings, pg 123: “That man can break the forever law of infinite Love, was, and is, the serpent’s biggest lie!”

At first I didn’t see how this related to your topic, but then I did. The spiritual fact, the truth is: we CANNOT believe in or accept error, for there is none…. we cannot believe evil’s lies, suggestions, temptations, etc., for we are always safe in God’s loving care. I.e.: we have no choice but to reject the lie.

Yes, while knowing this, we still lock our doors–physically and mentally, making the human concessions… until we truly see and feel the absolute fact… down to our toes!

Sure great to have a rudder on our boat, huh!

  7. I’ve been thinking along these lines in preparing to receive my first hive of honeybees. The process right now involves LOTS of discussion of disease, parasites, and almost an expectation of suffering and loss. Getting my thought right is as important as getting the right equipment in caring for them. Actually, more important.

    1. Bless you Beth for loving and caring for a new bee colony…(family)
erroneous human thought has made life very hard on our vitally
important earth life companions….I think you are an angel and you and your new friends shall enjoy the health, and protection of Love…

  8. Thank you so much for this message ! I absolutely love ❤️ your daily blogs and they uplift thought immediately to where it needs to be. This is an invaluable resource to add to my daily morning study routine and I thank you deeply for it !

    1. Ditto, what Laurel wrote; My day unfolds best when I’ve read each daily blog article. I am openly and deeply grateful for each one.

  9. Thanks so much Evan and all who have contributed their thoughtful insights. I am so grateful to have SpiritView each morning to uplift my thought.

And, welcome to Laurel, I don’t remember hearing from you before. Laurel is my given name.

  10. Oh… A good a night of
    rest…reflection….realization

    This morn, my heart
    is simple…
    Love and fear cannot
    exist in the same place
    at the same time….

    And since only
    one of these is real…
    Simple……

Must be getting older and wiser …..
    For I now know…
    I can’t believe
    everything I think…

Hope a good day awaits you…

  11. Thank you, thank you Evan. Your blog is also a part of my morning study every day. Maximo – a lovely poem. Thank you.

  12. Thank you Evan and commenters. So fitting as I was pondering how often I hear remarks from neighbors and friends on health issues. Evan, your point about how watchful we are in many areas, but how important it is to be really watchful of our thoughts, reminded me of the constancy this takes and the blessings it brings for all.

  13. Dear Evan and All – there is so much good here. Thank you all for sharing. It means a great deal to me to read each day. Blessings to everyone.

  14. Thanks, Evan, and everyone for today’s comments. Like Carol, I, too, think of disease, when it’s mentioned, as dis-ease. It puts it in the mental area, instead of the physical. MBE is always telling us to “watch.” In MY p. 210 is one of my favorites: “Beloved Christian Scientists, keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them.” And another favorite, “Stand porter at the door of thought.” S&H p. 392 We are so blessed to have these precious teachings.

  15. am extremely grateful for your SV of today Evan, as well as for the last 3 SV`s because one can really work and pray with them very well. And one can apply the Truths in them to all socalled problems which may occur – thank you very much!

  16. Thank you,Evan, for bringing out the meaning of that passage. And thanks to the commentators,as well.I look forward to SV every day!
