Thinking for yourself

October 7, 2019 | 15 comments

As a reflection of the one Mind that thinks for itself, you think for yourself!

I find the above a helpful truth to remember when feeling the opinions of others trying to sway my opinion.

To stay healthy and free of bondage, it’s important that we allow truth alone to shape our views. Friends, family members and neighbors may express strong views to us that they expect to shape and form our view. But they aren’t always right! Sometimes, their views may even be harmful. So, it’s critical that we do our own thinking.

To “think for yourself,” in Science, means to let the wisdom, intelligence and understanding of the one Mind be reflected through us. It doesn’t mean taking an egotistical, self-righteous stance of “I know best,” and then acting on human will. It’s a humble position of seeking out the truth and letting Truth’s view be expressed through us.

When Truth forms our view, we have gained the best point of view, and the outcome of our thinking will bring good results.

  1. This is reminding me of a verse from Hymn 399:
“God is His own interpreter and He will make it plain.” Meaning that I am going to be reliant on God for Him to guide my thoughts. This is our security and gives us peace of Mind.

  2. Thank you so much for this post, Evan. It is very meaningful for me just now. I was at a wedding on Saturday and there was a lot of talk among those who attended about body shape and physical beauty as well as about the ‘older’ generation and how we are growing old. I had much to fight in my thought. I love the reminder that we reflect divine Mind who thinks for itself and whose thoughts determine what we are. We do not have to accept the views of others and let these shape our views and thoughts and lives. We can think for ourselves.
I find this also to be so relevant to how we are responding to the daily news and to how we do not have to let them disturb our confidence in God’s presence and might.
    Much gratitude to you!

    1. Yes. It’s obeying the first commandment, where MBE says, this “ME” is Spirit. [So good to ponder the rest of that paragraph on 467 of S&H] Spirit has no awareness of identity as body, but as infinite Love which knows no confinement in physical beliefs of body or environment. This ‘Me’ of infinite Life cannot be dragged down by gravity or aged by a spinning planet. This ‘Me’ lives all Her radiant identities in the eternal now, absolutely untouchable by human opinions! Good to know that for everyone.

      1. Thank you Evan and everyone for your comments. Diane’s comment made me think how cool it would be to have a link people could click on to bring up page 467 of S&H to see the “This me is Spirit.” reference. So I created a link. You can click on the link below to access the question/answer from page 467 that Diane mentioned (thanks Diane!).

        1. Thank you Evan and thank you everyone for your comments.

Lovely idea Brian. Thank you for supplying the link. (=

  3. How wonderful are all your comments. Looking for the correct thought to express, means listening for guidance from God. Thank you for this lesson.

  4. thank you for clarifying that we think for ourselves but how we do it. So many people reject ‘religion’ or any kind of help, because they think they can’t think for themselves.
My daughter is going through the time in her life when people project their thoughts about body size and perfection. I am going through a time in the human experience where everyone and everything suggests strongly that you are older, don’t expect much and having a disease is part of getting older. Amazing. She laughed when I told her this.

  5. “Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man’s dominion over the whole earth. This understanding casts out error and heals the sick, and with it you can speak “as one having authority.”

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy (Page 14:25)

I find this statement very helpful, in so many instances.

    Thanks for sharing, all!

  6. That is so interesting and metaphysically so absolute what Evan gives us in today`s SpiritView.
Thanks you very much for it, Evan!

I think the following passage by MBEddy in Science and Health on page 106 also matches to today`s topic:
“Man is properly selfgoverned only when he is guided rightly and governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love.” I always loved this passage. But also the passage, SpiritViewFan states is very helpful, and I love that as well. Thank you SpiritViewFan for mentioning this Truth By MBE.
Thank you all for your lovely and good comments.
    Am very grateful for SpiritView!

  7. Thank you so much Evan for this very timely post. Today I was trying to bring my thought into line with the God-Truth about my project as I’ve been tempted to get upset and stressed over neighbours and project contractors involvement. This post is helping me to set aside the mortal ‘view’ of myself and those I’m engaging with and look out from what God has created and is doing for His/Her sake … no mortal motive or agenda is necessary, neither can these beliefs impede the activity of Mind. This is when I drop to my knees and be incredibly grateful to Jesus Christ and Mary Baker Eddy for living and sharing this wonderful “way of the Truth” in order for us to live by. “I Am” is enough for this moment, this day, this week. Thank you to all ‘contributors’ for your wonderful inspiration. I do so love this family.

  8. Thanks for sharing your beautiful posts! The pics are always beautiful n reflecting divine Mind’s Creation 🙂
    Blessings for your blessings!
    Love n Peace, IB
