Cast a ballot for unity

November 6, 2012 | 13 comments

The United States has a presidential election today. The populace has been barraged by campaign ads, political news reports, myriad opinions from every point of view, and polls predicting a certain outcome one day, and an opposite outcome the next. Now it’s time for citizens to cast their vote for who they think can lead the country best.
In praying for the future prosperity of my country, I realized recently that there is more than one way to vote. Placing a ballot in a counting box is one way, and a critical way to guarantee a vital democracy. Putting one’s mental might, strength and prayers into guiding the overall thought governing our country is another way, and a way that makes a positive difference.
People live, act, work and make decisions in a realm of thought. Policy-makers, politicians, state employees and their comrades are all influenced by the thoughts around them, whether they are aware of the influence or not. Citizens collectively contribute to the make-up of thought felt in Washington D.C., in Congress, the Senate, and legislatures everywhere.
There are some striking needs in the political house of the United States right now. For one, we need unity. We need politicians who work together, listen to each other on both sides of the aisle, value and respect one another’s points of view, mindfully consider the merits of their comrades’ ideas and sit down and work together for the common good of the people.
In Truth, there is one Mind that makes this type of unity possible.
I will vote for a candidate for President. We’re allowed only one choice! But I also plan to cast another “vote,” sent out into the common thought I share with all my fellow countrymen, for unity. Whether my candidate wins is not as important as whoever wins adopting a spirit and willingness to work with his fellow lawmakers as brothers and sisters, rather than enemies. It’s time to put hardened partisanship aside, and reflect the one Mind we all have in common that has blessings abundant for everyone regardless of the political party they are aligned with.
In God’s eyes, there is one “party,” the Party of divine Love. And as children of God, we’re all members of it.

  1. Read your note waiting in line at voting location in my town. Thrilled to see a pouring out of interest in exercising democracy. Thought..”hath we not all one Father?” Will hold that thought today especially. Thanks for your “higher ground” position.

  2. Thank you for the healing thoughts in this post (and others)! “With one Father, even God, the whole family of man would be brethren; and with one Mind and that God, or good, the brotherhood of man would consist of Love and Truth, and have unity of Principle and spiritual power which constitute divine Science” (S&H 470:1). Off to the voting poll with prayer!

  3. Wonderful idea, to vote, and then to vote again. I pray that our votes be cast for unity, integrity, and wisdom. Not for personality. Righteous government is voted in by righteous thinking. “and the government shall be upon His shoulders”. I think political ideology can try to trump wisdom, economy, and brotherly love, and I pray daily to see that the only TRUE ideology is the ideology of individual freedom to pursue God and to rely on Him wholeheartedly. Thank you for this incisive blog today, Evan, much appreciated!

  4. Unity means one and that reminds me of the first Commandment: “No other gods before me”. I like to think of this commandment as a promise to us that there are no other gods and that we are in fact united under the government of the one God.

  5. Evan, again, I thank you for this Blog. I live in the borough of Queens, New York City, where there is vast destruction from Hurricane Sandy. My worry was “How could any one vote, when their homes an businesses were destroyed. Why can’t Election Day be postponed to a safer day?” Anonymous #3 helped me in my thought with the Quoit from S&H 470-1. I realized it has to be now, for the whole country is involved, not only New York City. And also it takes time for the new administrations to ready themselves for governing.

  6. Wow! Thank you for this. It is so important with all the confused thought swirling around.

    Your blog is wonderful!

    Peggy

  7. Thank you, Evan, for this important perspective. “We are not divided, all one body we” (Hymn 264, Christian Science Hymnal).

  8. Like that, “Party of Divine Love”.

Someone helped me to see the true vote has already been cast, always was, God always in control of Her government. My prayer is to stop doubting, even as I exercise my privilege and right by going to vote and encouraging others to do the same.

    Thanks Evan.

  9. How comforting to know we are all together in this grand army of thought. There are no sides to God. So each one is on His side – listening. It’s as you said the “Party of Divine Love.” So whoever is elected we stand together on His side supporting each other with the spirit of inclusiveness. Sher

  10. Love the national motto that appears on our currency, “In God We Trust.” Now if we can all affirm this to be true, no matter who wins in the elections, we will all work together harmoniously. We’ll then demonstrate who’s really in control of His (our) government.

  11. Thank you Evan, for another home run!
I appreciate your blog and all the comments, and as I await the final count tonight my song will be,
God Bless America. As a teacher and being asked by students about our elections, I’ve told them it doesn’t matter who wins as long as we are in agreement that we will support our President, our senators etc and each other to be the best we can be.
    Hugs to all, Patty
