The weather was not cooperative in Juneau, lots of rain and clouds. But what’s new! Liquid sunshine they call it up here.

Learned more about muskeg, an acidic water-saturated patch of forest that looks similar to a meadow, but isn’t. The little trees you see below are as old as the big trees on the perimeter of the opening. There are so little nutrients in the muskeg that the trees grow extremely slowly, if at all.

And don’t step into those water holes you see! You may sink 20 to 40 feet into the ground and come up months later as a sheen of oil, our guide warned with a laugh in her voice… 🙂
