What is governing your body today? Divine Mind or mortal mind?
Mary Baker Eddy helps us sort out the two when she writes, “We must learn how mankind govern the body, — whether through faith in hygiene, in drugs, or in will-power.” Excessive attention to hygiene, faith in drugs and will-power are ways and means of mortal mind.
She continues, “We should learn whether they govern the body through a belief in the necessity of sickness and death, sin and pardon, or govern it from the higher understanding that the divine Mind makes perfect, acts upon the so-called human mind through truth, leads the human mind to relinquish all error, to find the divine Mind to be the only Mind, and the healer of sin, disease, death” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 251). Believing that sickness is necessary and sin a normal part of life, are also mortal mind attitudes. However, she gives us the cure for mortal mind in her next statement about finding “…divine Mind to be the only Mind….”
Mortal mind is not a real mind in competition with divine Mind. It’s a non-mind, a pretense to mind that has no intelligence of its own. It is not a mind to fear, but an error to be understood as error.
When we honor the one Mind, we feel the one Mind’s influence over our health and body. Good things happen. The pretense of mortal mind to control us through disease and sin disappears. It’s seeming hold on us vanishes. The good effect of divine Mind appears. Healing happens!
See the Mind of God as the only Mind governing your experience today. You’ll be happy with the results!
Yes. I’ve always turned to the answer to the question on page 469 of Science and Health when I’m in. the emotional throes of some crisis: “What is Mind? Mind is God. The exterminator of error is the great truth that God, good, is the only Mind, and that the supposititious opposite of infinite Mind –called devil or evil — is not Mind, is not Truth, but error, without intelligence or reality.”
The emotional throes, I realized, came from believing that I could be whiplashed by thoughts of evil intent from minds that don’t even exist. The one Mind of my beloved Father-Mother is pure GOOD, I could surrender to GOOD, leave my life to GOOD, the only consciousness, the only power that has ever existed, Spirit’s all-presence, Her tender, loving authority. The calm and peace that comes is immense. Temptation vanishes. Joy in my — and everyone’s — true selfhood as a child of good in a universe of good is restored.
Ah, thank you Diane. A perfect message of hope this morning. thank you!
And a beautiful inspiration from Evan!
All is well!
Thanks Diane, great comments. I love that quote, from S&H, “the exterminator of error.” I got an image of an exterminator spraying a chemical on error that is toxic to it, destroying it. The chemical is called Truth.
Thank you Evan! I thought the term “non-mind” for mortal mind is brilliant, so clear and exact! I always appreciate your succinct clarity. Thanks again.
I agree, using the term “non-mind” was brilliant. You really made the point of mortal minds nothingness. Thank you for today’s uplifting post.
Perfect for this season and year round! Thank you!
Thank you.yes, I have to not be fearful of mortal mind. I have difficulty in stopping mortal mind from taking my peace away
Hi Kathy, part of a Bible phrase came into thought this afternoon, “….that passeth all understanding.” I Googled it and it is, Phil 4:7, “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” For additional insight/inspiration, I checked out The Message version which I found to be very comforting: Phil:4:6-7 “Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.”
Thanks Evan. I’m with Dawn and also like the term “non-mind”. I came across an article/testimony where the practitioner working with the person declared, “There is no mortal mind to argue for a material universe, no mortal mind to make you conscious of a mortal dream, and no mortal mind to argue with God.” I’m sorry, I don’t have a shareable link.
“Hearing restored” by Sue Ulrich Libbe, from the November 27, 2023, issue of The Christian Science Sentinel:

I don;t know if this is the one you mean, – but it is very good anyway.

Thank you dear J. I misunderstood and thought you couldn’t
find the link to the one you mentioned, and that was another
one!! The one that you gave the link for is really good, and a
great help to me. I have only just got around to opening it.
Thank you Maggie for attaching an excellent article. The version I attached of “Healing restored” is not a shareable one, unfortunately. Maybe someone could kindly attach a shareable one.
Thank you so much Evan, great message !
Thank you also J for this really good article. Here’s a link, hope it works.

It works perfectly, thank you Martine!
J that is a great quote you shared. It is so absolute, it leaves out nothing, completely destroys all the ways mortal mind tries to operate. Thanks.
You’re welcome Rose. Absolute is the perfect description. 🙂
Dear “J”, regrettably I can’t open the article by Sue Ulrich Libbe.
Perhaps somebody could help?
I am utmost grateful for today’s SpiritView, so like I am everyday. Evan’s SpiritView Blog is so healing, comforting and lovingly instructive!♡
I am very happy and thankful to learn and may practise that God is the One Mind, yes, our mind as we are God’s. Spirit’s image and likeness governed in our experiences by divine everpresent Love!
Thank you, dear Evan and thank you all for the articles and inspiring comments!♡
“Divine Mind is the only Mind”.. A beautiful realization of Truth… so helpful when
it seems mortal mind…. pretending to be many little minds seems prevalent in a
“material” world. One Mind, as in One God/Spirit/Principle/Truth/Soul/Life and
Love ….. (all definitions, describing God as Mrs. Eddy writes)….. On page 587 of
Science and Health, “God is one God, infinite and perfect, and cannot
become finite and imperfect”. She wrote in definition of “gods: Mythology; a belief
that life, substance, and intelligence are both mental and material; a supposition
of sentient physicality; the belief that infinite Mind is in finite forms; the various
theories that hold mind to be material sense, existing in brain, nerve, matter;
suppositious minds, or souls, going in and out of matter, erring and mortal; the
serpents of error, which say, ‘Ye shall be as gods’ “.
The One Mind – Divine Mind is our infinity of Good.
Thank you Evan! It never ceases to amaze me how already being familiar with the thoughts from the Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy , that you expressed, can still radiate freshness and newness of thought to empower the day! I am so very grateful for the Spiritual light cast on mortal mind to eliminate any belief of its’ existence!
Thank you very much, Martine! Your link to the article “Hearing restored” also works for me perfect now.♡
I am very grateful that we can help us each other here in many different situations. SpiritView is a very lovely and lively and blessing blog; thank you very much indeed for it, dear Evan. ♡
Just. yesterday we got news that my S-I-L was hospitalized with a stroke. She is not CS and had never asked for treatment but of course I could do prayerful work and spent much of the night knowing that divine Mind is the healer. We got word this morning that she (despite some ongoing medical beliefs and treatments) is fine and being released.
