What you need most of all

What do you need most of today?

Do you need more money, friends, attention, respect from others, time, a job or another place to live? Perhaps, but there is an even greater need which when met that not only meets your human need but also makes you a better person for the experience.

Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds” Science and Health, p. 4.

“What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire…” When we pray fervently for God’s help, we find it. Our thought moves from wallowing around stupidly in fear, worry and doubt, to conviction that God is on the job causing the right outcome to happen. Our thought gets aligned with God’s thought and solutions are found.

“What we most need is…growth in grace…” To accept the grace of God is to shut down human will, self-righteousness, pride and ego. It’s recognizing that God is doing all the doing and our job is to yield and let God do what God does so well.

“What we most need is…patience…” Impatience is the human will trying to jump in and do God’s job. It’s foolhardy. God always does the work better than any human effort, outlining or ego-play.

“What we most need is…meekness…” Prophesying bad outcomes, predicting failure, and fearing lack are all symptoms of mortal mind influencing thought and warping perspective to an evil end. They are the pride of the carnal attitude. Shut them down. Learn meekness. Learn to honor God and let God’s blessings flow freely and abundantly.

“What we most need is…love…” Love knows no limit, no lack, no fear, no disease. Love is an understanding of the infinite goodness of God that allows for no evil. Love is a power in and of itself that can cause any good outcome. Love can do anything.

“What we most need is…good deeds.” Prayer cannot be only words. It won’t work. Prayer must include action that proves the sincerity of our words. Put your prayers into action. Live them. Be them. Express them. As you do, you’ll have the money you need, friends that matter, respect you are worthy of, enough time to do the important work and meaningful work to do. Your human needs will be met. Why? Because your spiritual needs are being met, and they are what count first and foremost of all.

  1. It takes moral courage and discipline to walk the Christly way. It’s not a cake walk. But if you truly love God and have the desire to be good always, He gives us the needed support and strength. Being patient, good, meek, loving and forgiving surely puts you in God’s team and though the game may be difficult and challenging, victory is sure to come. The beautiful celebration of the victory with God enables us to wipe away the difficult and challenging times faced to be on the right track.
Its indeed worthwhile to have the fervent desire to be good.
Evan, the daily food you supply for our soul is so well savoured.

  2. Thank you so much for this, Evan. It touches a chord in my heart and is very helpful. How I would like to get rid of my little ego!… but it always comes back 🙂 … I shall print out this post and keep it with me!
    Thank you!

  3. This is one of the finest examples of a ‘good treatment’ I have ever seen! I immediately sent it to someone in need, with proper credit given to you Evan!

    Thank you for sharing it!

    Gratefully,

  4. “Our thought gets aligned with God’s thought”–what a wonderful definition of healing. No matter involved at all! When that occurs, healing is the natural outcome. Thanks, Evan!

  5. When it comes to meekness, I am not always sure of what it is exactly. At times I think it is submission to God’s (divine guidance) will, but is that all it is? Sometimes I think meekness requires humility but is not humility itself but more than that.

  6. God’s grace is my sufficiency in all things. This is a mental billboard I carry around in my mind daily. I try to never ask for anything but God’s grace. I truly feel if I want or need anything God will supply it. God knows everything I need and He provides it.

  7. One of my favorite passages in S&H. If we truly live with that prayer foremost in our thought it affects every aspect of our lives—our home, our church, our community, our world. I’ve seen its effects when I try to live it and put it into practice, and the results are stupendous! Think of what it can do for the world.

  8. Needed this today. Thanks Evan. Putting this on refrig: Prayer cannot be only words. It won’t work. Prayer must include action that proves the sincerity of our words. Put your prayers into action. Live them. Be them. Express them./Evan. But, keeping the whole treatment.

  9. This is one of my favorite passages from Science and Health, and I always add “Gratitude” after “love.” I am so deeply grateful to God and Mary Baker Eddy for Christian Science. Thanks to you, Evan, for your inspiring message on Grace and to all who have commented.

  10. I have often thought about this quote and you have helped open new meaning to me. Also. I’ve been thinking how meekness is actually strength. One must be strong to keep one’s opinions to one’s self and know that Mind governs.
    Thanks to all!

  11. Thank you Evan! Today I followed after meekness , kindness , Love and what I believed God would have me do. Others thought I should do something else. Now I read this and every ones comments. To me the end result will always be good since it is of God.
