Grudges and resentments are tumors of mortal mind.
“Include moral as well as physical belief in your efforts to destroy error. Cast out all manner of evil. ‘Preach the gospel to every creature.’ Speak the truth to every form of error. Tumors, ulcers, tubercles, inflammation, pain, deformed joints, are waking dream-shadows, dark images of mortal thought, which flee before the light of Truth.” Mary Baker Eddy
This is exactly what I needed to hear and to think about early this morning. I will “speak the truth to every form of error” right now. As Christian Scientists, we know we are only dealing with dream-shadows. Thank you for this great reminder. Vicki
required tubercles?
Regarding the anonymous commenter who said, “required tubercles.” I just did a very quick Google search and it looks like one instance has to do for women who are pregnant & “their body is getting ready to begin nursing the baby.”
I think Mrs. Eddy means here that we should not accept the body can do whatever it wants. We are not subject to curses of any kind. No curse on man.
Speak the truth to everything. See through what you’re looking at to behold the real idea of God who is Truth.
Mrs. Eddy does not use the word ‘required’ in the sentence. That was pulled from the para heading (Morality required.) Here are the sentences as they are written:
Include moral as well as physical belief in your efforts
27 to destroy error. Cast out all manner of evil. “Preach
the gospel to every creature.” Speak the
truth to every form of error. Tumors, ulcers,
30 tubercles, inflammation, pain, deformed joints, are wak-
ing dream-shadows, dark images of mortal thought, which
flee before the light of Truth.
Yes, yes, the word “required” was not supposed to be in the sentence. That is a cut and paste error on my part that picked up the marginal heading and inserted it into the sentence. Sorry about that. Thanks for catching it.
All fixed now…
Might I also add regrets to resentments and grudges? My question to all is this: do you mention it to the one suffering from that belief or handle it silently?
Thanks –
To above,
In the Mind of God, any grudge, resentment or regret is just as unreal as a tumor. The key is to see the unreality of it all. So, any communciation with a patient struggling with such a belief would be only with the motive and effect of undoing the claim, not building it up. This takes wise discernment and the compassion of Christ.
Thanks Evan <3
Are you saying tumors are caused by grudges and resentments? Also do you speak the truth to the actual tumor, or to the thought that believes in a tumor?
There is no more reality to a tumor than there is to a grudge. But if one holds a onerous grudge, a deformed thought in consciousness, the objectification of that false belief may take the form of a tumor in some cases. Love is the antidote.
