I woke up to a quiet calm morning recently and looked forward to a peaceful day in the office with my practice.
An hour later, a rancorous windstorm rocked the region with such force and tempest that I couldn’t help but stop what I was doing and wonder what was brewing.
After a while, I walked into our dining room, which is a bit of a cove with windows on three sides, to observe the storm raging. Trees were bending, tumbleweeds were rolling, birds were hiding, and noise engulfed the house. But I felt no fear. I felt no disturbance. I felt no worry. I was utterly peaceful in my consciousness of Love that I had been dwelling in all morning long while praying for my patients.
As I watched the windy scene from my secure space in the house and felt profound peace despite the rage just outside the windows, I thought, “This is the way spiritual mindedness protects us from the storms of mortal mind. When we stay in ‘our room’ of spiritual consciousness, it’s like a house of protection between us and the storms of the world. The storms of fear, disease and temptation do not get to us.”
We can be as close to a storm of the world as I was to that wind outside, but still feel no effect.
It would be like Jesus sleeping undisturbed in the boat during the storm. His disciples were sizing the situation up materially. They let their thinking get caught up in the storm of the moment. They were panicked and afraid as a consequence.
Jesus did not soak in the material evidence and fear it. He stayed in a consciousness of God’s omnipotence and omnipresence. He not only felt safe, he was safe.
“Peace, be still,” he commanded. And the storm stopped.
Storms swirl around us all the time. Economic fears, health fears, threats from conflict, uncertainty, and their kin come raging through communities of thought frequently. But they will not invade the thought convinced of God’s Truth and omnipresent Love.
Stay out of the storm and remain at peace.

So very beautiful – loved the picture by Rembrandt but was really uplifted by your thoughts of peace and calm in every situation. Vicki
I like this!
It made me realize how easy it is to get caught up in thinking you shouldn’t have any problems if you were a good metaphysician – rather than recognize your spiritual thinking as a shelter from whatever storms blow through your experience.
Much to ponder today – thanks. 🙂
Just another day in the Midwest! LoL. Seriously, thanks for these reminders regarding storms whether they be in weather or every day problems.
Peace ~ One of the infinite number of Gifts God has given to each one of us ~~ powerful, useful, permanent.
Thank you, Evan, for the illustration you provided, and for the painting by Rembrandt.
“Peace, be still.” ~Christ Jesus
I’m always amazed and grateful by how far reaching the applications of these stories are to our experiences. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful way to view our protection from the “winds” of matter/animal magnetism in any form it takes. I am working on finding the grace that leads us through life passages that are the most difficult. This is a good message with lots to work with.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I am not a fan of storms, but your comments helped me to see that a storm is just the material picture. Thank you so much!
Mary Baker Eddy gave her staff assignments daily to protect against amimal magnetism, especially storms. ” Peace be still” is reflective of many times how I approach my demonstrations over matter.
Thank you Evan. Your daily messages are so much comfort for the beginning of each of my days.
