The one Mind kills diseased thought germs

The phrase “diseased thought germs,” in this passage by Mary Baker Eddy gave me pause recently:

“Much yet remains to be said and done before all mankind is saved and all the mental microbes of sin and all diseased thought-germs are exterminated” Science and Health, page 164.

Christian Science explains that humans exist in a world of thought, and if a condition is spread amongst humanity, it is spread by thought, either consciously or unconsciously. Thus it is paramount that we watch our mental environment and keep out unwanted intruders, including suggestions of disease.

With the onslaught of graphic descriptions of disease in the media, it requires vigilant metaphysical work on our behalf to keep our thinking clean and healthy.

Like a weed in the garden starts with a tiny seed hiding in the soil, disease would seem to start with a tiny suggestion planted in thought. A “diseased thought germ,” as Eddy describes.

So, how do we protect our consciousness?

By putting on the Mind of Christ and holding to the realities of Life in Spirit.

The Mind of Christ does not believe in evil or disease. The Mind of Christ knows eternal life and permanent health.

Jesus was able to see health where others saw disease. Why? Because he had the Mind of Christ informing his perspective and drawing his conclusions. He believed in good, not in evil.

Disease is evil. There is no good aspect about it. Jesus did not believe in it and he did not entertain it as a welcome mental guest.

Jesus knew humans suffered from disease and needed healing, but he still didn’t believe in it. He knew it was not the reality it appeared to be, and he could make it go away with his understanding of spiritual reality. And we can do the same.

As we put on the Mind of Christ and look out through the lens of Spirit, we can see what Jesus saw—health instead of disease.

The Mind of Christ beholds health, sees health, experiences health. There is no room, space, place nor allowance for disease in the Mind of Christ. There is no fertile bed for germs of disease to be planted and germinate. Any attempt by mortal mind to plant a disease fear in the Mind of Christ is futile. It will never work. The diseased thought germ would instantly die in the presence of Christ.

So, stay in the Mind of Christ! Be a fertile mental bed for truth and love and never for suggestions of disease. Cast them out and keep them out! You belong to God. You have a glorious spiritual life of enduring health and harmony to enjoy and live. Think Truth, live Truth, and live free!

  1. Thank you Evan dear for this gem of a reminder…….

I also love the simplicity and imagery of entertaining. Do we welcome and unwittingly entertain an idea of disease as we would a friend or neighbor? This is a powerful question.

    Is disease welcome?

Thank you for enabling us to be more alert, to understandingly assert our authority over ideas and suggestions that are unworthy of our consideration.

Thank you for reminding us that we already have the Mind of Christ, for divine Mind is the only Mind of man and the universe.

    Warm blessings to you too…………

  2. Oh thank you Evan!! You make this so clear and simple for such a powerful idea. Even children can understand this avenue of clarity!!

  3. “Jesus knew humans suffered from disease and needed healing, but he still didn’t believe in it”.
What an interesting statement. Humans suffer from disease because they believe in its reality. But Jesus did not. That’s how he could heal. And that’s the basis for our healings too! Great article!

  4. What a great loving reminder, thank you Evan. I remember my mom taught me how to quickly wed the tiniest sprouting groups of weeds from the soil specially when under the heat of the sun, thy wilt so easily. I have to remember this because “diseased thought germs” are very subtle.

  5. We can’t be afraid of these thoughts. But understanding that if they are not God’s thoughts they are not mine seems to make them dissipate. The human condition is all about fear and based on fear, and fear being the makes something seem real. It takes practice and understanding to change to this fearless way of living; neither running from fear nor capitulating to fear. thank you Evan. I have quite a notebook of these blogs.

  6. This weeks lesson; “DOCTRINE OF ATONEMENT,” has the answer when explaining the falsehood of “FUTURE PUNISHMENT,” in blaming God for creating diseases as punishment for sins committed. God is Love which knows no revenge, hate nor jealousness. That’s all mortal mind’s mess, and God has nothing to do with that.
