What are you doing that is spiritual?

June 28, 2016 | 23 comments

Would you like to do something worthwhile today? Then ask yourself, “What am I doing that is spiritual?”

Whatever you accomplish spiritually will stick with you forever. It will create a growing sense of purpose and worth, bless you and those whom you interact with, and create a better life experience.

For instance, one might say that there are two ways to play a piece of music on the piano. With inspiration, or without.

If a pianist plays the notes correctly, but with no inspiration, the music lacks positive impact. It may even hurt to listen to it. But if played with inspiration, the melody lifts thought to the heights of Spirit and inspires joy and delight.

The same rule applies to how we conduct our daily activities. If we just “play the notes,” or get through our day, without inspiration, our work can be tedious and even feel burdensome. But if we “play our music,” or act with love and delight in our heart, with inspiration, the outcome can be inspiring and delightful for ourselves and all around.

The key is to be motivated by spiritual purpose rather than blind obedience to mindless routine.

Find answers to questions such as, “How can I help others feel the touch of God in everything I do? How can I express more gratitude? How can I express more love, wisdom, and good cheer?”

What you succeed in expressing spiritually will lift your heart, inspire your outlook, and make you feel good about yourself. Why? Because it was the most worthwhile thing you did all day.

“Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action” Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health, p. 454.

  1. Evan, this is so very important to our world today…..to strive to help others, to find more gratitude and to express MORE love, wisdom and good cheer! You really hit it on the head!

Our contribution to the world we live in would be more productive and spiritual if we all worked on an inspired approach to each day!

    Thank you Evan!

    Lovingly,

    1. The daily, hourly, moment-by-moment practice of CS is a challenge and requires constant focus – taking EVERY thought captive. When Mrs. Eddy tells us to work, work, work, watch and pray that should be an indicator that there is some effort involved. But, the peace that passes understanding is more than worth every scalding tear!

  2. Thank you Evan. Yesterday I caught myself identifying with being material. I was feeling a little tired at one point during the day and started to justify feeling tired due to having worked strenuously all weekend in the yard. Then it hit me…I was identifying with being material, not spiritual. I thought how wonderful my life would be if I could identify with being spiritual at all times and not just when reading the lesson or praying specifically about something. How much more freedom and joy I would experience if I identified myself every minute as a reflection of God and therefore only identified with feeling, knowing, and doing what God is feeling, knowing, and doing. I did start that very minute knowing that God never feels tired or never suffers from expressing good and the tired feeling just left me immediately and I was able to do what I needed to get done. So I think the key to “spiritual doing” is identifying at all times with being spiritual, being God’s reflection, and therefore feeling, knowing, and doing only what God feels, knows, and does.

  3. Identifying ourselves and others spiritually, 24/7–now that’s heaven! Sunday as the First Reader at church read the scientific statement of being from Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, I heard her conclude: “Therefore, man is not material, he is SPIRITUAL.” (my caps for emphasis). I think that could be the most revolutionary statement of all.

  4. Thanks, Evan! Truly an inspiring message! And….Welcome back, Spiritview!! I’m finding that one of the most inspiring things I can do, first thing in the morning, is to establish in my thought Who I Am, as a spiritual idea or reflection of God….to see myself as God Knows me and to defend my thought from any negative, aggressive suggestions that would try and pull me down. This isn’t always easy……I woke up this a.m. with Fear and Doubt thoughts and for a while accepted them as my own! Then…..I Really Woke Up and saw those thoughts for just exactly what they were…….the carnal, mortal mind’s attempt to thwart my spiritual inspiration and purpose for the Day. Thank God we have a system of scientific thought – Christian Science – as a standard by which to check our thinking when we wake up in the morning and as we go through our Day! Love and Blessings to All!

  5. What team thinking! Evan establishes the thoughts, expands on them for our clarification. Then Brian expands further with his practical proofs experienced in his own life. What wonderful inspiration and direction for us all. With deep appreciation.

  6. What another beautiful example of our Oneness. When I got up this morning I had the thought that today I really need to stay conscious of the Truth at all times and in all places – and to salute the Christ in all whom I meet or think about – and I hadn’t yet seen your message. To realize that the only real work I do is think – all else is demonstration of thought – is my purpose for today!

  7. How powerful is this train of thought today – I just opened my daily email from The Promises and here it is:

    2 Timothy 4:18 (WEB)
And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work,
    and will preserve me for his heavenly Kingdom;
to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

  8. Thank you so much for Spiritview and to all the commenters. When I awake the first thing I look for is the Spiritview for my daily inspiration. I love all the comments too!

I was just thinking yesterday, and praying to understand how to know myself and those around me as spiritual, especially in the face of the material senses pushing at my thoughts. It came to me was the word “strive”. I looked up the word in Concordance and this excerpt spoke to me, “Simply asking that we may love God will never make us love Him; but the longing to be better and holier, expressed in daily watchfulness and in striving to assimilate more of the divine character, will mould and fashion us anew, until we awake in His likeness.” SH 4:17-22.

    Love to all!

  9. Hi Evan and all your SpiritView Fans!

Christian Science is challenging, yes, but we all know it is the Only Way! And
with the wonderful resources at hand, how grateful we are, huh. (To say nothing
of the constant loving presence of divine Life and Truth!!)

This citation came to thought as I read Evan’s article and your comments:

“We must look where we would walk, and we must act as possessing all power from Him in whom we have our being.”

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy

So, we must “act as if”…because we DO possess, by reflection, all of God’s goodness and power!

OK, ONWARD with this very strong ideal!!

    :<))

    1. I love your enthusiasm. I have so many readers who are new to Christian Science, or just looking into it, that your statement, “we all know it is the only way,” would sound out of sync to them, and even off. I can tell that it is bringing great benefit into your life, which is way cool. But I wanted to make this short remark to acknowledge all my readers and where they are in their search for Truth, and how we have to be careful not to speak for everyone. But we can always speak for ourselves! Much love…

  10. Evan, so glad to have SpiritView back this morning, for your inspiring message and all of the thoughtful and helpful comments – just what I need!

  11. Missed you Evan. Welcome back. So true this message. Like Brian, throughout the day I catch mortal thought trying to creep into my thinking. Thank God for CS. Welcome to CS newcomers. CS is a diamond discovered.

  12. Thanks Evan for this post –perfect encouragement for the day — and to all who contributed their lovely, loving, thoughtful comments.

  13. Receptivity is the key element to this blog, for without it my work will be poorly seen as garbage, not worthiness to be considered by any one.

sporting activities (wild water rafting, diving, energy
