Breathe in God’s atmosphere of Love divine

August 4, 2020 | 27 comments

Breath is a metaphor for spiritual inspiration.

With concerns circulating in public thought about the air we breathe, when I’m out shopping or running errands, I find myself frequently humming these words to a hymn from the Christian Science Hymnal:

Hymn 144

In atmosphere of Love divine,
We live, and move, and breathe;
Though mortal eyes may see it not,
‘Tis sense that would deceive.

The mortal sense we must destroy,
If we would bring to light
The wonders of eternal Mind,
Where sense is lost in sight.

For God, immortal Principle,
Is with us everywhere;
He holds us perfect in His love,
And we His image bear.

Let your every “breath” be an inspiration of truth and love coming from God. These inspirations will keep you strong and well.

  1. Thank you Evan, this hymn is one of my favourites too. There are no viruses in the “atmosphere of Love divine”! I also love this verse from the Bible: “The Spirit of God hath made me and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.” (Job 33:4).

  2. Thank you very much Evan for this so freeing spiritual interpretation of the word “Breath”. That is very helpful to work with. I also love that hymn very much and pray with the first verse more and more. And I also love that Job-verse which David M mentions. It is very helpful, thank you David reminding me of this wonderful Truth thought from the Bible.

    1. Oh yes, and will breathe in God’s atmosphere of Love divine on a longer trip I will make in a few minutes, although it will be by car. However also here God’s breath in Love divine is needed and gratefully received! ♡

  3. I have been thinking about breathe and where it comes from. I have a little dog who was having difficulty breathing. I kept telling her that breath comes from God, in fact it is the first thing that happens when we are born and she has no difficulty breathing..

  4. There are so many beautiful hymns feeding us a thought to meet every human need. Thank you Evan and everyone. The omnipresent atmosphere of Divine Mind, Love is all we need to breathe. This is the Kingdom of Heaven realised…Gods care not mortal air❣️

  5. Thank you Evan
    This has been my rock all throughout this pandemic The words are so appropriate
    We are held in His love and we are breathing in nothing but that love
    Thank you all for your comments

  6. All of these thoughts shared are like “a breath of fresh air”!
    Like in the spring after having the house closed up for the winter, it is so refreshing to open the windows. Our home, our secure and safe abode, is within God’s ever presence, surrounded by Love and harmony and peace.
    The warmth of Love, like the warmth of spring envelopes us with refreshing thoughts every time we turn to our Mother/Father protector and guider and let in these comforting thoughts.

  7. The complete process of breathe involves INhaling as well as EXhaling; we want to breathe IN Love and breathe OUT Love…. Knowing that our very being is in an of God, and all we can EXpress is likewise from and of God.

  8. Over 50 years ago, I overheard a C.S. Practitioner repeat that 1st line of that hymn to a patient over the telephone. He asked the patient if she then was enjoying her poise. She must have replied in the affirmative, because he said he would call her back as he was with a patient…( I was seeking help with my first pregnancy)
    Even today, I remember the immediate help from those words, “In atmosphere of Love divine, we live, & move & breathe…”
    Much gratitude for your inspired words for each day, Evan.
    All who add good thoughts are also appreciated.

  9. 1. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
    2. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
    3. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. (Genesis 1:1-3)
    I tend to think of these verses in the present tense. So God is always creating His thoughts and the spirit of God is always moving these thoughts and God is always providing light the inspiration from these thoughts.
    A few months ago, it came to my thought about the importance of “the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” It’s the second thing that God did. He moved. First he created; second He moved. To human sense, breathing is the physical movement of the lungs. To spiritual sense, maybe we can think of it as breathing in God’s thoughts (inspiration) and breathing out that inspiration in acts of love, kindness, compassion, etc.
    Thank you Evan, and all, for the inspiration that has led me to think about breathing from a new perspective and to start seeing the unlabored, unhindered, eternal movement of God’s thoughts.

  10. We are surrounded by theories of all kinds. People believe these theories, but they are nebulous and without power if we follow the teachings of Christ Jesus. Hymn 337 says
    Theories, which thousands cherish,
    Pass like clouds that sweep the sky;
    Creeds and dogmas all may perish;
    Truth Herself can never die.
    Worldlings blindly may refuse Her, close their eyes and call it night; Learned scholars may abuse Her, but they cannot quench Her light.
    Thrones may totter, empires crumble,
    All their glories cease to be;; While She, Christ-like, crowns the humble,
    And from bondage sets them free.

    When I watch the clouds pass I think of this hymn. Where did that theorie go??? Oblivion,
    Thanks to all of you, dear family in divine Love. Ellen

    1. Thank you Ellen for sharing that hymn. I don’t know if I’ve ever read or sung it. It’s a goodie!
      And “Where did that theory go???” Good question! (=

  11. One way I’ve been breathing in Love’s atmosphere, is to begin each morning playing 2 hymns from our hymnals which are full of healing prayers. I especially am loving hymn 55 which I’ve rarely sung in church. The first vs really speaks to me:
    “Father, hear the prayer we offer;
    Not for ease that prayer shall be,
    But for strength, that we may ever
    Live our lives courageously.”

  12. Thank you so much, Evan. I love and sing this hymn frequently, also. Everyday you offer “spiritual food” which always blesses us! Much gratitude to you, and to those who comment.

  13. Wow! Thank you Evan and all those others who comment. I like to read SpiritView in the evening before I go to bed. So, instead of watching the “news”, I have wonderful thoughts to think about. Thank you David for the insight that there are no viruses in Divine Mine, Love. Thank you to those who use the hymns as a form of prayer. I can definitely use all these healing thoughts about breathing. Thank you all.

    1. Dear Ginger, Do you have access to JSH Online? I’m sure a search of breathing or breathe or breath would supply a good amount of articles that might be helpful. If you don’t maybe I could check and share some with you. Onward and upward! (=
