Be as a little child

August 28, 2024 | 32 comments

Jesus loved little children because of their freedom from wrong and their receptiveness of right.  While age is halting between two opinions or battling with false beliefs, youth makes easy and rapid strides towards Truth.

~ Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 236

It’s possible to be just as free from wrong and receptive to right at 90 years as 5 years.  Age doesn’t determine our state of mind.  Attitude and outlook do.

Live the Mind of Christ no matter how many birthdays you’ve seen come and go, and you’ll keep making “easy and rapid strides towards Truth.”

  1. Thank you, dear Evan! Yes, we are children, the pure and innocent children of God. God loves us as His wonderful creation for ever and ever, to whom all good is possible for iternity!

  2. “Attitude” and “outlook” are the words that stood out to me from Evan’s article today.
We have just had a whole day of determining that we do not have birthdays – that
we are spiritual and immortal – so we are really looking at our attitude and outlet
    as God’s children.

The little children in the picture are happily examining things they didn’t know much about.
They were seeking to learn more about everything, and were keen to find out new things. One
of them even has a magnifying glass to enlarge what they are looking at.

As the spiritual ideas and children of God, we can also, regardless of what ages matter would
try and pin on us, keep seeking out and learning about new spiritual ideas, and examining them
closely to find out more about them. We can go on and on doing this, since God’s spiritual
universe is infinite, so there is no end to finding out more about God’s treasures. So we can
never get in a rut, as materialism would have us. The opportunities for us
are endless, as we discover more and more about the spiritual facts of everything.

So to be like a little child is desirable and a fun thing to be.

  3. Being as a little child is our innate inner self. Thank you, Evan and all for
reminding us of this treasure. A few thoughts I have come across:

“Loving your inner child helps you remember your innocence and recognize
how much Life Loves You. Ask the child within, ‘What can I do for you today?'”

“There’s joy and wonder everywhere when you see the world through the
eyes of a child”. (Authors Unknown)

“A child can teach us three things:
    1. Always be curious
    2. Be happy for no reason
    3. Fight tirelessly for what we want.” [as long as it is God-derived] ; )

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once
he grows up” – Pablo Picasso Seeing ourselves as God has created us ..
perfect and free, our attitude and outlook … reflects this and we are
loved and cherished by our Father/Mother God.

    1. Thanks Carol. What Picasso said is very true, and not just for remaining a natural creative artist, also for remaining in every way that free, innocent child that we were and still are, but just seem to be covered up under layers of society’s “educated beliefs” about ourselves and the world.

I was in a yoga class yesterday and the instructor at one point asked us to try think of the moment after our “birth” when we took that very first pure breath — before we had a name or had any thoughts or wrong beliefs about ourselves or anything.. Just that freshness, newness, aliveness, innocence. It is not CS (as we’ve been discussing, the material birth is not the truth of our eternal being), but I thought it was a nice metaphor.

      1. I like what you wrote, Rose, about Picasso and creativity and how society
sometimes stifles us with it’s mores and “educated beliefs”, as you say,
        when adults.
His artwork was a bit childlike in a way. It is interesting – children’s
artwork and how they depict in certain styles, but most always, creatively,
like they are inspired to do without holding back. I had a customer years
ago who had an actual Picasso ceramic on her wall, that did look like a
realistic fish. But artwork, like creative thinking takes on whatever we
want it to be, so thinking spiritually is the way to go, if we wish to have
“the mind of Christ” as Evan writes above and that is a lovely way to be.

  4. Yes be receptive and flexible like children ! Because we experience joy with that attitude ! Thank you Evan!

  5. On being interviewed on his 85th birthday Malcolm Muggeridge (British author) was asked how it felt. He responded “I feel like an expectant young man of twenty three”. What a great answer showing great expectations and a state of mind disregarding age and consisting of the extant positivity of good. I had a piping instructor who had “Attitude is everything – choose a good one” on his T shirt. These statements illustrate our being as ageless expressors of the immortal goodness of our source in our oneness with Life , Truth and Love.

  6. I am rejoicing that I (and each of us) am now and forever a child – a child of God – and all that comes with that truth: relying and trusting and completely dependent on God; loving God unconditionally; purity and innocence. What a marvelous and natural state of being!

  7. Having been raised in Christian Science I loved the lesson that God was our Father-Mother. What a tender way to view God. No fear of God compared to friends who had punishing or remote concepts of God. Sunday School taught that God is ever-present and we could rely on God in any trouble which we did. What freedom and joy that brought to childhood. God as Father-Mother is just as comforting now.

  8. Thank you all for your comments. That is such a beautiful picture, image of wonder and investigation. I love it.

  9. Giving a shout-out to some of our SV friends based on yesterday’s discussion:
To chilesands for a Happy Eternity Day,
To Shelagh for a joyous day of her son’s wedding.

Also to our dear friend J. We miss you here and hope to see you commenting again soon. Blessings.

Love to all of you (all of us) dear children of God.

    1. Yes, Rose, I agree totally, we miss our friend “J” and hope to see her soon again! With Love!♡

        1. Dearest J, The articles you referenced always enhanced and enriched the topic for that day. I found them immensely helpful in clarifying the message. Please know how helpful all of those articles were to many of us readers. Many, many thanks.

    2. Thanks for the loving thoughts for all dear Rose and the shout-out. Evan gave some guidance on the “comment” section. It really is just that; people are to read what he’s written and comment on it. I appreciate SV and all who contribute…wish commenting was more my jam, but I’d be in revision mode forever… 🙂 xo

      1. Dear J I hope you don’t mean to say that we won’t see you here. You always share the most spot on articles and express a loving presence in your words of wisdom which are appreciated and of help to all here.

        1. Thanks Rose. My understanding is the format of the blog is the topic and a short response from those who read it, if they wish to comment.

          1. Dear “J” – my practice has always been to read Evan’s blog or watch his videos, then marvel at the picture, and once that’s done, I scroll through the comments looking for YOURS because your shared articles do much to enhance Evan’s original message. If you will not be posting any links from now on, I’m sorry to hear that and I want to let you know how much I have appreciated all that you have shared. Every article has been most inspiring. ❤️

          2. I’m not able to reply directly to Cheryl, but I just wanted to say thank you. 🙂 I was new to the website in 2020 and got so much from additional articles that were posted and wanted to do the same. I also view it as enhancing and adding additional inspiration, which is so needed and important for our spiritual growth. It was fun and a joy and privilege to share. Much love to you all!

          3. Dear J, I would like to echo Rose and Cheryl’s comments.
I have always looked forward to the additional articles, also,
that so much inspired as a bonus to what Evan’s original
message was. They, indeed, complimented each topic and
fit perfectly with the messages and I have always gained so
much from inspiration from the kindness you had shown in
researching and sharing them. I do hope they can continue,
because I have gained an enormous benefit from reading
them. Giving sincerely in this way increased the love
exponentially and the way I see it, if magnifying the focus
on the topic, in a spiritual way, as the articles did, there
could never be too much inspiration. imho

          4. Thank you Carol. I imagine this site reaches people that are maybe new to Christian Science. I’m very grateful for the articles that were added and hope it benefited others as it did me…I know some of the articles that I read really drew me in and answered questions. However, I don’t believe that is the trajectory of this site.

    1. Yes, katherine, I love what you wrote. As God’s children we Are complete in
every way – spiritually reflecting our divine Creator who sees us and thus,
we see ourselves, as being always perfect and loved. It is just a mortal sense
of things, that might try to see us in lacking, but we can not lack with God’s
Love completing our every part of Being. That is a really lovely thought.

    2. Thanks a lot Katherine and Angel. I love very much what you both comment so true and lovingly!
God’s child (we all) are complete in every way and manner!♡♡

      1. We all help each other with our comments and thoughts and
I have gained so much from everyone’s caring and sharing here.
The Love shared is so special and appreciated.
Love to you all so much

  10. J, I too always started with the wonderful thoughts and spiritual direction from Even, and then scrolled down to read the very well chosen articles from you. It was sort of like attending a Wednesday evening service in a Christian Science church. If the readings were inspiring, comments on Christian Science and testimonies just flowed. As a first reader for many years, that was the best compliment I could receive—not just thank you’s to me, but the readings actually sparking spiritual thinking. Sharing good ideas and articles with each other that meet a need has always been a Christian Science tradition that exudes brotherly love. Sorry that, for whatever reason, anyone would want to curtail that. I will miss that spontaneity here.

    1. Thank you Kay. And thank you for sharing your experience as a first reader…so uplifting to hear of your impact. You are so right in regard to how that flow of inspiration affects us in so many positive ways.
