If you ever feel like you’re in a mental rut, not making good progress in your understanding and demonstration of spiritual Life with God, it may be time to wake up from “stupefying illusions!”
Mary Baker Eddy writes, “Lulled by stupefying illusions, the world is asleep in the cradle of infancy, dreaming away the hours” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 95).
Stupefying illusions are beliefs that argue there is a mind in matter that can control us physically, create evil, and make us suffer for it.
To stay healthy, resist stupefying illusions! Be wise to not “dream away the hours.”
Jesus Christ instructed, “Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation” (Matt. 26:41, NLT).
We are always agreeing with something. Be sure to agree with spiritual reality! And even quicker to disagree with material unreality.
You have a beautiful, healthy and happy spiritual Life with God. You never lose it. But if thought drifts off into the dreamland of “I’m physical. I’m mortal. I’m at the mercy of evil,” the beautiful spiritual Life you have with God, may feel lost and impossible.
But a dream never changes reality. And reality is always yours to enjoy.
Stay awake! Stay awake to reality! And enjoy its benefits.
I’ve always found Ephesians 5:14 so motivating: “…Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” Who doesn’t want to be given more Light to see better/understand more?! I recently read one of the synonyms of resurrection is reawakening! Thank you dear Evan for another wake-me-[us] up! I hope everyone has a wonderful wide-awake to Good, to reality, week!
Thanks for that Eph. quote it I really hits the mark.. I also find it helpful to say “That is not my thinking” when a cloud comes in.. my thoughts are God’s thoughts and they are always clear!
That’s wonderful John! It reminds me of something I’ve read – to substitute God saying it to see if it’s true: “I am sick”, saith the Lord;” I am angry”, saith the Lord; “I am afraid”, saith the Lord; etc. Those aren’t true of God “the only I AM”, so they aren’t true of me! I find that helpful, like you, to see if “my thought are God’s thoughts”. Thanks for sharing your inspiration,
I like this line of thinking Sharon. We could use it to prove the futility of so many kinds of false mortal thinking,
It actually becomes laughable and sounds so silly to hear, “I am frightened,” saith the Lord, or “I can’t get anything accomplished ,” saith the Lord, or “I’m overwhelmed,” saith the Lord or “I’m depressed,” saith the Lord. It kind of breaks the spell (the mesmerism) and then it’s a little clearer, as John said above, that this really is not our thinking, gives some distance between us and the ridiculous suggestions/thoughts.
Thank you Sharon, John, and Rose (and Evan). That tool is very helpful and usable. To add “saith the Lord” to what I am thinking would change the picture for sure. Rather than the stupefying illusions of matter we should be asking God how he us. Thank you all.
I meant to ask God how He “sees” us.
Wonderful message! Thank you Evan
All wonderful messages! Thank you, Evan, and all!
Sometimes we are in a dream and are so thankful to be awoken from it –
seeing it’s unreality .. it’s silliness, it’s horror or anything that would try
to claim to be our reality. It just is not true. We are so grateful to be
out of it and awake to God’s Truth and Love.
Thank you so much for sharing this inspiration, Evan and all… It is the
sunshine of a bright day that is our True Reality in Life.
Thank you Evan. I also like Lynn G. Jackson’s helpful directive to help us wake up from the dream in:
“Stillness and hearing God’s voice” by Lynn G. Jackson. From the January 6, 2025 issue of The Christian Science Sentinel:

Excerpt from the above article:
” It may start with a spiritual fact, such as “God is love” (I John 4:8), then continue by reasoning something like, “Since God is Love, He is also caring for, supporting, and embracing each of His children, including me. Since love is God’s nature, this is my nature as well because I am God’s image and likeness. As the reflection of God, Spirit, I am spiritual, governed by God and including qualities such as perfection, wholeness, and freedom. No disease—no anger, hatred, or fear—exists in this relationship of God and His spiritual creation because none of that is included in God.”
On topic of being awake, I thought of Psalms 17:15 “…I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness.”
I somehow got a better understanding of this verse when I noticed the punctuation (where the commas are placed) which I hadn’t noticed before. I used to think it had to do with what I see and what will satisfy me when I wake up in the morning (I had used it to help with sleep/waking issues) but the meaning was a bit fuzzy.
Now it seems to be saying that whenever I wake up out of narrow material beliefs (“stupefying illusions”) into expanded understanding of spiritual Truth, it will be clear to me that God’s likeness is EVERYWHERE — and that is certainly very satisfying.
Thank you Rose. Your declaration and clarification, of not only the punctuation, but the direction being provided of God’s insistence, WHEN I WAKE UP (to error, evil, disease, stupefying lies, or anything else NOT FROM GOD) steps us all UP and OUT of being distracted. NO TIME FOR DISTRACTION seems to emanate in each of your clear contributions to SPIRIT VIEW. Each reading of your contributions/demonstrations has sparked me to change thoughts into action. You’ve been a blessing each time, and reached out to HELP overcome another stumbling block. With gratitude, THANK YOU.ROSE!
With God alone agree…
Great Susan, that’s it, thank you !!! ❤️
Thank you Evan. A very needed reminder for me today..
Thank you very much, dear Evan for your today’s healing advice of – leaving the dream for joyful waking – how about we read in one of our wonderful hymns.
To be joyful awake with God is wonderful and healing and expresses the needed energy of Spirit through us.
Oh, thank you dear Rose. That’s very interesting how you explaine Psalms 17 : 15 “I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness.” How you explain the meaning of this verse through understanding the punctuation correctly, it lovingly includes our brothers and sisters in our spiritual satisfaction. That’s great!♡
I love all comments here! Dear J, that article is very helpful and suitable; thank you very much!
