Silence the noise to hear God’s voice

October 23, 2026 | 5 comments

In the middle of a beautiful church service, the cell phone of a member in the congregation started sounding off.  The owner of the phone was oblivious to the obnoxious noise coming from her purse.  As the phone continued to ring, everyone in the church started looking in the direction of the noise.  They were no longer listening to the sermon being preached from the desk.  The noise was too distracting.

The noise needed to stop, I knew.  To help, I arose from where I sat and walked over to the woman, pointing to her phone.  With a bit of fumbling, she found the distracting noisemaker, silenced the ringer, and thanked me.  I returned to my seat, and the service continued with attention directed to the sermon once again.

Life is the same way.  God is speaking to us all day long, feeding us inspiring truths to act on and live out for blessed results.  However, if there is “noise” around us that pulls our attention away from what God is saying, we may not be hearing what God has to say.  We may be more fascinated by the noise, not realizing the penalty we are paying for letting our attention get sidetracked.

To treat ourselves fairly, and to continue growing spiritually on a regular basis, we need to give ourselves quiet time when thought is focused on what God has to say and not distracted by worldly noise.

Mary Baker Eddy writes plainly, “In order to pray aright, we must enter into the closet and shut the door. We must close the lips and silence the material senses” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 15).  The “closet” is spiritual sense, the Mind of God, where attention is riveted on spiritual truth.  There is no noise there.

Be kind to yourself today.  Find a quiet space, enter the closet of spiritual sense, and commune with God.  You’ll be glad you did.

  1. Thank you for all your wonderful posts. They are all helpful.
Today I learned that we must silence mortal mind to hear God’s voice and direction.

  2. Excellent point, Evan and as soon as I read that, I thought about how social media can be that constant distraction (if you have notifications turned on). I know some people dont “do” social media, but if you have a business, are an entertainer, artist or musician, you do…and sometimes it is easy to find yourself constantly checking it!

  3. Oh Yes the worldly distractions are so loud, that we fail to listen to the most important voice, the voice of God, the voice of Truth and Love. Our “To do List” includes everything except sufficient time for the Lord, who daily blesses us with innumerable gifts.
First in our “To do List” should be quiet time with God to know and understand Him better, to listen and seek His guidance, shut the door to material sense and let spiritual sense take over lead the way. “Spiritual sense is the conscious constant capacity to understand God.”. Understanding God heals any discordant situation and brings peace, health, plenty and harmony in our life.
Unfortunately we are so engrossed in worldly things that we fail to seek first the Kingdom of God. If we seek the Kingdom of God first then everything and much more abundance so naturally and effortlessly fills our life.
God who is our true relative, whose love alone is unconditional and pure, most certainly should be given the top priority in our “To do List”. in our life.
Let’s silence the chaos, hush the worlds distractions and reach out to and listen to the soulful utterances of Divine Love which fills our life with plenty, unmatched joy and harmony.

  4. This message was just what I needed to hear! I lead a very busy life and it is vitally important for me to gather that quiet “listening” time each morning. It not only blesses me, but it benefits others who I work with.
