Make room for spiritual growth

February 16, 2017 | 11 comments

When a gardener plans her garden, she first decides on what fruit she’d like to harvest, then plants her garden accordingly.

If she wants carrots, onions, peas and tomatoes, then she makes room in her garden for carrots, onions, peas and tomatoes.

If she plants the whole garden bed with tomato starts, then she’s only going to harvest tomatoes. And there won’t be any carrots, onions or peas.

Your daily, weekly schedule is like a garden bed. You harvest what you make room for and plant.

If you’d like to reap the fruits of knowing and experiencing the healing power of God, you make room to grow spiritually, to study, listen and pray.

If you spend all your time pursuing money and success, or some other worldly goal, there won’t be any space for God’s blessings to grow and develop in your life.

What’s growing in your garden? What have you made space for? Be sure there’s plenty of room for getting to know God and reaping the fruits of increased spiritual understanding.

“You will always harvest what you plant” Galatians 6:7, NLT.

  1. This is so true and such a rich way to live.
Thank you for this reminder of a free and timeless path to follow.

    1. Thank you Evan, Karen and Marion. I love the sweet graphic and yes, let’s give peas a chance. What we sow, we reap. Also, the difference between a flower and a weed is a judgement.

  2. Yes! “We are all sculptors, mounding and chiseling thought…” (Mary Baker Eddy)

    We shape our lives, daily!

An interesting study in our textbooks, I’ve found, is on the words proportion(ate, ably, ly) degree, ratio, scale, etc.
Mrs. Eddy is clear about how and where we should put our time and effort.

    Thanks, Evan!

  3. That was a great visual on choice. “Mary Mary quite contrary. How does your garden grow?” We are the gardeners and we make the choices.
We are responsible for keeping and maintaining it. Am I planting too many geraniums or do I need more color and variety? You can tell that spring is on my mind. Thank for this sweet analogy!

  4. Thanks, Evan. I love the thought of a garden and what I’m planting. Am I uprooting the weeds of resentment, fear, discouragement? If we focus on what we want to plant in our garden of thought and watch what is growing there, the “weeds” will present themselves clearly and we can pull them up by the roots! What freedom and joy we will experience!

  5. Yes, Spiritviewfan. Proportion is given in our Lord’s Prayer. For instance: “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” Proportions are relationships and can be expressed in different ways. Our perfect relationship, of course is with one God being expressed in different ways, His/Her infinite reflections.

In mathematics, there truly is one principle number, known as one (1). All other numbers are constituted from #1. 1+ 1 is known as Number 2, reflecting in form the attributes of the principle #1.

Same with each number following 2, an additional reflecting number one is given to its identifying name. Zero (0) is the absence of any error, being the allness of God, Principle, Life, Truth, Love, harmony fulfilling perfect need of all space.

In Science, The real man also reflects and is the the perfect expression of One Principle, God, and His/Her attributes and qualities. At any moment, man’s infinite individual identities are perfectly related one to another, demonstrating harmony of the One and only.

  6. As I read the title of this lovely Spiritview and read the comments my thought process suddenly translated the title to “Make TIME for spiritual growth.” Was I making “room?” Or was I crowding out planting my heavenly garden with wasted moments. Since that awakening I have tried to utilize every (formerly wasted) moment to listen and talk to God. (1) in an elevator in my condo going up or down (2) waiting for a friend to knock on my door (3) waiting for help on the phone (4)waiting at a traffic signal (5) waiting for employee help at the bank or store………..and, I find my times are joyful, full of brief, but quiet talks with God. Impatience in waiting moments are now filled with thoughts of God and all that I reflect from His bounteous Love. Thank you, dear Evan. I am making room now whenever I can for thoughts of gratitude and love.
