A fun piano duet

I love to play piano duets!

Here’s a fun piano duet I played with Olin Ensley as a postlude at a recent service in my local branch church. Olin is a highly accomplished pianist who has been playing regularly at my church. I’m grateful he is happy to partner with me on occasion for one of these pieces!

Many of you will recognize the tune as the melody to a popular hymn in the Christian Science hymnal.

Hymn 592

We are walking in the light of God,
We are walking in the light of God.
We are walking in the light of God,
We are walking in the light of God.
We are walking, we are walking, ooh
We are walking in the light of God.
We are walking, we are walking, ooh
We are walking in the light of God.

We are all God’s children, expressions of one Mind,
Living in the radiance of Spirit all divine.
Every heart and nation is answering the call
To a true salvation knowing God is All-in-all.

We are praying in the light of God,
We are praying in the light of God.
We are praying in the light of God,
We are praying in the light of God.
We are praying, we are praying, ooh
We are praying in the light of God.
We are praying, we are praying, ooh
We are praying in the light of God.

As we turn our faces, up to the light of Life,
Harmony replaces all pain and fear and strife.
See the heavenly harvest so bountifully poured,
As we raise our voices being all of one accord!

We are singing in the light of God,
We are singing in the light of God.
We are singing in the light of God,
We are singing in the light of God.
We are walking, we are praying, ooh
We are singing in the light of God.
We are walking, we are praying, ooh
We are singing in the light of God.

  1. Evan thank you for sharing your musical talents and joy with us, it is uplifting; and also for sharing the wonderful words to Hymn 592.

When I saw the title Siyahamba on the video I was curious so I looked it up and found this on Wikipedia, “Siyahamba (written down by Andries Van Tonder [1952], and possibly composed by him, or possibly a Zulu folk song) is a South African hymn that became popular in North American churches in the 1990s. The title means “We Are Marching” or “We are Walking” in the Zulu language.”

    1. Rose, thank you so much for sharing your research.. there is a spirit in the Zulu language and I’ve hear some speak it as if they were singing to each other..
May all our hearts sing and make a glad sound to the Lord..

  2. Thank you Evan – that is wonderful. The perfect message for our world this morning. And so well played

    1. Yes, I reread the hymn as “Ukrainians are walking in the light of God” and carried that thought throughout the song. An uplifting
prayer to start my day and refer back to often. Grateful!!!
May God bless Ukraine and the Ukrainian people!

  3. Good fun! One of our pianists sometimes belts out the very cheerful types of hymns like this one in Peter Allen or Elton John style and it’s GREAT!!! Of course, when he plays loud we all sing louder as well so it’s much better ! We have another o[pianist who plays classically and very delicately and quietly and we love that too…and we give him a clap at the end of the service. he is so good, I’d pay to go and hear him!

  4. Love it! Moved to joy filled tears. The video is especially wonderful at the end when you both expressed the feeling of a job well done. Nothing like the satisfaction of demonstrating beautifully a skill that improves from many years of practice. Piano and Christian Science. ❤️

  5. I gave a testimony a week ago on how
our country and the world can’t go through
    a seeming divorce.
    “Undivorced from truth, uncontaminated,
and unfettered and unfeeling by human
    hypotheses and divinely authorized.” MBE
This is for the lesson sermon, but it applies
    to how we live it.

The pianist played, Let there be piece on earth,
as the prelude. We all walked up to the piano
and sang with her, leaving with, “and let it begin
    we me,” In thought.
I did not attach the song because I didn’t want to
    take away from Evan.
I saved your email the last time you shared with us. Thanks Evan. Always thanks to everyone.
I shared this quotation before, but it was
the reason she ended with that piece.

  6. Wow!! I had no idea you could do this too! Not just play piano, but a duet. And not just a duet, but a duet with syncopation! Thank you so much for sharing this joyful declaration of everyone’s inseparability from the light of God!

  7. This is great! We sing this in our church as well, near Atlanta Georgia. It did remind me of the Ukrainian people too, so they can’t be hurt especially singing like this. We uplift them with our thoughts and our prayers daily.

  8. Listening to and seeing Olin play the piano with so much passion and talent is one of my favorite parts of the Sunday service in Pasco.

    1. Thank you very much dear Angie for this wonderful article. Tonight it is so very needed and it comforts me a lot, and Evan’s and Olin’s lovely music, as well. Thank you very very miuch! ♡♡♡

    2. Angie, could you find the Sentinel article I mention here below titled “There is no reality in war” from 27th Januar 1940 by James A. Vincent and give the link to it? It is so relevant and metaphysical.

  9. This was super. It started off my day with an abundance of joy. Thanks so much Can we have some encores!!!

  10. COOL!! Syncopation! And even a change of key!
Unlimited joy! Angels even play the piano!
    Thank you Evan and Olin.

  11. Both Shonnie and I loved this so much! The joy you and Olin expressed…in your playing and in your expressions …was so apparent. The many talents God has endowed Man with are overwhelming….”mind blowing” in fact!

  12. Wonderful gift you sent out today. May we ( all mankind which includes Ukrainians, Russians and Putin) come into God’s presence with joy, singing, and praise!

Thanks everyone for joining into this chorus !
    BRAVO!

  13. Thank you so much for that fun duet, Evan and Olin. Very en”light”ening. It reminded me of another SpiritView presentation by you and Olin quite a long time ago. You played “You Raised Me Up” and I listened to it a number of times. It is still on Youtube at:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyrVKaJOgHg.

I am enjoying that again as well as your new offering. Thank you again.

    1. Pat I was also thinking of that last duet from Evan and Olin of ‘You Raise Me Up.’ I remember it very well, as I recall it was in the early days of lockdown, It brought me to tears back then. Thank you for the link, I was going to go back and try to find it in SpiritView archives but you’ve made it easy to enjoy and be Raised Up again.

  14. Thanks for sharing Evan. You and Olin are a great team. Enjoyed the words shared, too.
Thanks so very much to both of you!

  15. Several of you have asked where the music came from.

You can find this duet in “Folk Hymns for Four Hands,” arranged by Larry Shackley.

Glad you liked it! Was fun to play.

  16. Wow does that good, Evan and Olin, to listen to your joyful four hand playing. And it is such a lovely text. Thank you very much indeed! I enjoy it very much!♡

I can’t withhold to inform all here that I found on Facebook a Sentinel article from Januar 27, 1940 by James A. Vincent with the title “There Is No Reality In War”. Regrettably I cannot give you a link to that article, but you can find it in JSH or somebody can give the link to it. It is worth reading and very suitable !♡

      1. Regrettably I cannot read the whole article, as I did not subscribe to JSH. Could you post the whole article Angie or somebody else, please!? Thanks a lot for all the lovely and helpful comments ! ♡

  17. Loved it, thanks for sharing it. Just got back from a dual piano recital we hosted at our church here in Bend – the kids demonstrated amazing talent. Such fun!

  18. Thanks Evan and Olin, A joyful time together and giving much joy, Appreciate the comments on war also.
