Be careful what you teach…

April 22, 2011 | 4 comments

One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head.

She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, ‘Why are some of your hairs white, Mum?’

Her mother replied, ‘Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.’

The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, ‘Mummy, how come ALL of grandma’s hairs are white?’

  1. Thanks for that bit of wisdom and humor, Evan. I have really been appreciating your blogs both video and written. So glad I found this site.

  2. That mom got a taste of her own medicine from her innocent child, didn’t she?

This little story covers so many subjects: the false belief of aging and its symptoms, lack of respect in relationships, the damage done by guilt-tripping another (or oneself!).

It also highlights the importance, as anne points out, of teaching children with love (not fear), with truth (not lies or old wives tales), and with life facts (not depletion, decrepitude, decay and death so-called facts).

Children put so much faith and trust in what their parents say — a reflection of the faith and trust we all want to put in our Father-Mother God.

This “fable” reminds me of what Mary Baker Eddy wrote in Science and Health: “Parents should teach their children at the earliest possible period the truths of health and holiness” (p. 236).
