Be one of the blessed ones

Would you like to live a blessed life? You can. Jesus Christ told us how to do it.

He taught in the Sermon on the Mount:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. (Matthew 5:3-12, NKJV).

When we practice humility, gratitude, meekness, continuing spiritual growth, mercy, sincerity, peacemaking, and spiritual fortitude, we are blessed.

Jesus did not say, “Blessed are the angry, irritated, selfish, resentful, immoral, hostile and combative.” These states of mind are impoverished, and create a feeling of being separated from God.

Be one of the blessed ones. Live the Sermon on the Mount, and experience what it feels like to live a blessed life with God. It’s wonderful.

  1. what I like is that it s not a matter of being all those things at one go ! we are blessed if we are at least one of those things….at least to start off with……… what a relief !!

  2. When working in the Reading Room, and showing visitors the value of the parallel Bible, I always turn to the beatitudes and point out Peterson’s paraphrases of the last three:

“You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.

10 “You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom.

11-12 “Not only that—count yourselves blessed every time people put you down or throw you out or speak lies about you to discredit me. What it means is that the truth is too close for comfort and they are uncomfortable. You can be glad when that happens—give a cheer, even!—for though they don’t like it, I do! And all heaven applauds. And know that you are in good company. My prophets and witnesses have always gotten into this kind of trouble.”

Isn’t that great? I look at the visitor and we both have big smiles–for usually we’ve all “gotten into this kind of trouble”.

  3. Diane, thanks for this helpful explanation of the usefulness
Of the blessings the Beatitudes bring. Evan always a great leader in discussions……thank you both. And Angie!

  4. Thank you Evan for today’s message on being blessed. Two things stood out. First, the phrase “spiritual fortitude.” That is something we all need these days, the strength to stick with Truth, no matter how things seem materially.

Second, you wrote that the sermon on the mount did not say, “Blessed are the angry, irritated, selfish, resentful, immoral, hostile or combative.” That idea was so ridiculous it made me laugh out loud. Humor can often break the seeming mesmeric trance we sometimes seem to be in. We are blessed by Spiritview each day.

  5. Wonderful, thank you Evan for this lesson on the beautitudes. And thank you Angie for the great article also about the beautitudes!

It is good to think.about all the good qualities which bring us the blessings we long for and with which we can bless our neighbor, too!

  6. Thank you for this lesson on the Beatitudes. As the meaning of this and the Lord’s prayer open up to me with their meaning, I wonder if i need anything else?
