Counter election anger with love

July 25, 2016 | 21 comments

There is a lot of anger being voiced in my country right now. The presidential elections have provided a channel for the anger and pent-up frustration of millions of voters to surface and take center stage in public debate.

Anger can play a role in jolting the human consciousness out of dreamy and apathetic states to recognize a need for reform, but it’s never going to be the tool that brings about genuine reform and takes collective thought to a better place. Anger is like fire that devours and destroys, and if allowed to get out of control can lead to devastating consequences.

So, I’m praying for the electorate in my country to take the higher road of love and wisdom to solve our nation’s problems. And that everyone in this country can feel the power and presence of divine Love in their lives to effect the needed changes that will make our country a better place to live.

Love is power. It is intelligent, competent, aware, knowledgeable, sharp, and able to make the best decisions. Love is not just a human affection. It is God, an all-knowing, all-wise Mind that can straighten out evil messes and make wrong right. The Mind of Love can “get the job done!”

When I see angry faces on TV now, I pray to see the presence of divine Love in that person’s life helping them find calm and rational judgment that leads to sensible decision-making. I pray to not let their anger become my anger.

Uncontrolled anger is not a virtue. It is a weakness. Love is power, and Love is strength. And its demonstration starts with me. And you too!

“Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace” Col. 3:12-15, NLT.

  1. Yes of course Evan. You are so right. Love prevails over anger and hatred. Divine Mind is always in control of the situation. One Mind, God good governs and in Gods government only harmony and love is present.
Shall definitely pray to see that “In Divine Science God good governs and man reflects God’s government.” So no question at all of any anger or frustration being expressed. “All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation for God is all in all.” from Science and Health with key to the scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy.

  2. Nor is divine Love in the arena of human opinion or emotion. This country has serious issues that need to be addressed. Prayer must be our starting point. Thank you for this, Evan, it is a much needed calm intelligent approach to the election scene in the U.S. “In Science, divine Love alone governs man……” (A Rule for Motives and Acts by Mary Baker Eddy).

  3. Dear Evan, thank you very much for today`s SpiritView. There is a passage in Science and Health by M.B.Eddy on page 455, which could be relevant to the present election situation, which is “God selects for the highest service one who has grown into such a fitness for it as renders any abuse of the mission an impossibility. The All-wise does not bestow His highest trust upon the unworthy.” It says also that only God chooses the right idea for such a high key position.
I am sure that also other countries pray that the right person will be elected; and so do I from Germany. I am sure, God has all power over that case!

  4. Thank you Evan, I had stopped listening, reading, or watching anything that had to do with the Presidential election as I had such a angry response to it all. Through prayer and asking to see correctly what was or seemed to be going on I came to realize I was frightened about the prospects for our country. One of the candidates didn’t seem to have even an elementary understanding of how the government was run or much knowledge of the constitution; it’ s purpose or function. That be as it may , recently a friend was telling me of a Lecture she heard on terrorism in which the Lecturer commented ,” Remember the Terrorist is a victim of terror just as you are.” Whoa! I was able to apply this to the presidential campaigns and begin to use some of the Principles we are taught. We let ourselves be duped into believing God is absent from our experience or theirs. I can learn to see that regardless of the human picture we are guided and governed by Love. I can now let God reveal to me what I need to know and leave the results of the election to Him. Thank you for your words of comfort.

  5. After every upheaval in racial issues recently, I have noticed people in my community going out of their way to be especially kind with each other.
Almost like an antidote to what they are being shown on the media.

It is a joy to see many people trying intentionally to be kind to each other.

    Thanks for this reminder Evan.

  6. So beautifully said! Is it possible for me to translate this article to send to my French relatives? Not sure if it will translate well using simple software to do it…Like what is found in Word.
I would love to see our community have a prayer meeting on this subject this article would certainly be the basis for the meeting. Has anyone experienced going to a prayer meeting for the community and how can one organize such a meeting?

    1. Hi Syl
You have been moved by Evan’s wonderful blog —
As you pray about a “prayer meeting” let divine Love, the One Mind open the way and give you guidance.
There may already be a place and possiblility for a community prayer meeting already near you. It could be just a few friends, or neighbours in a livingroom or on your porch, right in your own community.
I have attended the interfaith World Day of Prayer meetings annually, but that is an established program that is laid out.
Maybe your Committee on Publication might have an idea?

The main thing is that YOU are already in a prayer meeting with God,
and Love is speaking to you, guiding you where and how to go.

      1. Thank you Joy for your comments. I will check out our community to see if something is going on along those lines.

  7. Thank you so much for the wisdom and love you have provided on this subject. It is very much needed!

  8. This week’s Bible lesson on Love has a favorite passage of mine from Science and Health, “One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations, constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars, fulfils the Scripture, “Love thy neighbor as thyself;” annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry, – whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed.”

I can trust God to correct whatever needs correcting and not depend upon any politician. I also pray to know that God controls the Oval Office and the activities therein and will continue to do so whomever may be in charge there.

  9. So grateful for this post, Evan. We all need to be praying and applying the truths mentioned in your post and the comments…thanks to everyone’s contribution.

  10. Thank you Evan for this post! Also all the contributors.

I too have been striving to stay away from political conversations, articles, etc., as I’ve found the atmosphere has had a negative effect on me (and of course others).

I’ve been praying to know that Love always conquers hate! And, each of us are God’s creations – even those that seem unlovable. And, to remember that God IS in control; people can never usurp God’s power. God is protecting us.

  11. Thank you for this. So many people are afraid and worried. It has made me think of the many thoughts that float around out there that seem to be so believable just in the fact that they have been out there for a long time and have sunk into our consciousness.
I feel in this country many thoughts are coming to a head, ones that have frustrated us for so long and responsible for the feeling of inertia, that a healing is happening for this nation. As a CS practitioner used to say- when you come to the end of your rope, tight a knot in it and hang on.

  12. Thanks so much, Evan, for this! I know you and others are familiar with Eckhart Tolle and his books. In “A New Earth” he says something which I find relevant for our political situation on the Planet right now, as well as compatible with some of the things Mrs. Eddy said: “The closer we get to the end of our present evolutionary stage, the more dysfunctional the ego becomes………..We are in the midst of a momentous event in the evolution of human consciousness, but they won’t be talking about it on the News tonight.”!!!

Maybe it could be called…..”Awakening from the Dream of Form.” Sound familiar anyone….??? Love and Blessings to All!

  13. Although the crux of the post is to eliminate the anger, I was glad you started with “Anger can play a role in jolting the human consciousness out of dreamy and apathetic states to recognize a need for reform…” Apathy is not a good quality either. When things are bad, we can’t stand still. As you have pointed out anger can have its place awakening us. Following through to solve the problem through Love and wisdom is the next practical step, leaving anger in the dust. From watching various news sites, there has been an awakening. So, I’m with you in praying for the electorate to lose its anger and seek wisdom. Love heals.

  14. Thank you Evan for your inspiration and especially for the quote at the end. That sure sums it up! Thanks for all the helpful comments too. I love that we had this quote from the Bible in our weekly Bible Lesson: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” Christmas carols are wonderful all year round. So very comforting. (=

  15. As a Canadian who lived in the States for more than 5 years, I have been somewhat fascinated by the electoral system of a nation whose founding fathers were inspired to place the most profound reminder of the truth of who they are and their faith/trust in the One relationship on the most commonly used communication and exchange tool in society – their money. Many Americans I know – including my own cousins – are not aware of this truth and in ignorance they have become fearful and angry. While the truth has always been available, it was another American – Ralph Waldo Trine in “In Tune with the Infinite” (1897) who reminded us that the word heaven means harmony, while the word hell is from the Old English hell meaning to build a wall around, to separate; that to be helled was to be shut off from. Let us not be lured into thinking this “election”, like any other, is about anything other than an opportunity to step back and contemplate our one relationship in God.

  16. Sorry, but we cannot leave the election up to God. We can correct our own thinking by turning to God, and trust that we can hear Truth being transmitted to us. But WE do the voting. It is our right and responsibility to vote as wisely as we can.
