It’s a wet and windy morning here but I am on Reading Room duty. I trust that the sun “the symbol of Soul governing man” will shine out into our community.
I’m on Reading Room duty too! Just getting ready. And, recently we had a very rainy day when the remains of a hurricane was passing through. My first thought was, no one will be coming in today. Then I thought, I don’t have to accept that! Like today’s message, I can bring my own sunshine. Always alert and ready in the Reading Room. And, voila – I had the first visitor I’d had in some time, despite the rain. Or, perhaps, because of it – but certainly because of my change of thought!
Interesting. I couldn’t help thinking earlier that the ideas in the RR’s books had more power to generate light than all the power plants in the world combined. Certainly that power of Truth, the all-presence of Love, at one with the Life of all, utilized in prayer generates a light more warming, nourishing and attractive than even solar beams. It is FELT.
Yesterday I had a profound experience in the RR which showed me how Truth is a needed, needed comforter — for a boy, asking about Christian Science, agreeing with God’s goodness, presence and power, was visibly strengthened and given hope. He gripped his new textbook, ready to study it. His mom had died a few years before, his dad was in prison, yet the truth that what God sees, ever-living, ever-loving, ever pure, man the exact reflection of God and always cherished, gave him great peace.
Our Reading Rooms are beacons. Bless you all for keeping the light shining.
We had a homeless man visit our Christian Science Reading Room. The rotating volunteer librarians always prayed for him and treated him kindly sharing truths from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. He came almost everyday. Through social services he was given a place to live and kept coming until he got a job then moved away. We were grateful to have the joy of “shelteing him from the storm” until he took his wings.
My teacher of Christian Science healing said “It’s an inside job” when something outside seems to affect us. The weather seems easiest to me to deal with. I honestly feel the sunshine of truth and love no matter what the weather. I thank God for it and I strive to acknowledge for others who seem to be gloomy and depressed by fog and rain that they, too, are blessed with internal, eternal light. I say so because sometimes I have just wanted to say “get over it” when people seem depressed by what to me is clearly nothing. But the Christ in us brings clarity and compassion to others’ suffering – whether it seems from illness or heartbreak or weather. The inside job is love.
Thanks for all the lovely references to the Reading Room. I’ve always felt the warmth and caring there, when serving or visiting. Sunshine, to me, means joy and brightness. We can never lose our joy because it comes to us directly from God and is not dependent on “outside” circumstances. Joy is the sunshine to be shared, and thus brightens the world around us.
Thanks to all who lovingly serve in the Reading Rooms. Evan, as it always does, your blog met a need today. As Daphne said, sunshine, to me, means joy and brightness. We can never lose our joy because it comes to us directly from God and is not dependent on “outside” circumstances. Joy is the sunshine to be shared, and thus brightens the world around us. Deb thank you for sharing your teacher’s “It’s an inside job” when something outside seems to affect us. Put that short, powerful statement to work right away!
Thank you Evan and all. I love the idea of “sunshine of Truth” . I live where it is grey and overcast Nov to Feb. Looking for the small patch of blue sky reassures me all is well.
Deb, a friend told me many years ago that it is always an inside job. I viewed this as the good news and bad news. Why was I at fault? But this gave me the dominion to heal the situation, and I did many times. But to see the inside job is love is an eye opener. Love rolls the stones away. All I need be is reflected love. Thank you for sharing.
Didn’t a little boy respond, when offered sympathy for his homelessness, “Oh, we have a home. We just need a house to put it in.”
Home can never be destroyed. A practical prayer is claiming the law of progress; whatever experiences lie ahead will leave the families stronger, happier, more grounded in indestructible spiritual substance. Their next house will be even more beautiful.
Katie, very responsible in doing good deeds. A very fine reflection of you for God’s Works
I have the most praise for your efforts We all need to benefit from your unselfish care

In atmosphere of Love Divine, clad in the panoply of Thy perfect Love, all, all is well.
I love that with excerpts from some of my favorite hymns. Thanks, Sterling

I am also grateful for our reading rooms and all of the comments relating to them – thanks to all!

The homes of several friends burned to the ground in the recent No. Ca. fires. We need to take our sunshine PLUS human footsteps of loving help.
