If you want to travel to somewhere new, you must be willing to leave where you are. You must be willing to say “Good bye” to your present surroundings to travel to new surroundings.
A traveler in London, wanting to visit Paris, must leave London behind to see what Paris has to offer.
The same rule applies to gaining new views of Truth that serve to heal mentally and physically. We can’t hang around in an old state of mind and reap the benefits of a more inspired state of mind. We must be willing to move out of our familiar mental surroundings, and travel to new and higher views of Truth.
As Mary Baker Eddy writes, “Like our Master, we must depart from material sense into the spiritual sense of being” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 41).
“Depart from material sense!” That means leave it, vacate it, walk away from it, have nothing more to do with it.
Material sense sees limits, believes in lack, feels victimized, and even hopeless. It is often enamored with disease and fears death. It is not your friend.
Spiritual sense is your best friend! But spiritual sense is the opposite of material sense.
Spiritual sense beholds God’s reality, whereas material sense denies it.
To reap the benefits of spiritual sense, be quick to vacate material sense.
Think spiritual! Behold God’s reality. Keep thought in high places with Truth and Love. You’ll love what you find there. It heals.
Thank you so much Evan for these wonderful thoughts and for the link to your Daily Lift yesterday which led me to another Daily Lift and an excellent Sentinel Watch by Deborah Packer from Australia.
And thank you to J mostly and some others for past links to some very helpful articles in the CSS & CSJ. All helping to lift thought to a higher place than material sense. .
Thank you so much for these ideas /truths today Evan. Just when I was thinking about what I need to achieve materially today I’m reminded that what God inspires comes first!
‘’ We can’t hang around in the old state of mind and reap the benefits of a more inspired state of mind.’’ I re-read this …so true.
‘’We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.’’ Nelson Mandela.
Thank you for all your continual inspiration to realise Soul and relinquish sense.
Joyful day to everyone ❣️
Another home run! Evan, you just keep knocking them out of the park. Really love today’s Spiritview; wonderful insights as always. Thank you!
Ditto! Thank you, Evan, for your selfless constant giving and love for all mankind. Your recent Sentinel Watch was discussed last night at our Wednesday testimony mtg. What you shared about loving seeming unlovely world leaders was very helpful. Our prayers are needed and DO make a difference.
Maybe some remember a book that came out several years ago. It was titled, “To Walk on the Water You Have to Get Out of the Boat.”
“Obedience, The Essential Spiritual Mechanism” by Anthony Whitehouse:

This article is from Broadview Christian Science Nursing Care in Los Angeles, CA:
https://www.csbroadview.org/
PS. “the divine Mind which requires that we NEVER hold error as real.” as Anthony W said is very hard to do when your CS parents say “evil is unreal” yet have adultery and divorce…when there are wars, abuse, diseases, etc. I have a difficult time to be in the divine Mind only and not to hold all this error as real.
There are certainly evidences all around the world, near and far, that argue for the reality of evil. It gets easier to face it down fearlessly as one understanding the omnipotence of divine Love and Truth. It gives you the backup you need to triumph over it, and not sucuumb to it.
If divine Love & Truth are omnipotent, then why is there the experience of evil? The woman MBE cites as never growing old was in a state of what would be called shock and insanity. MY CS devoted mother denied adultery and got Alzheimer’s. So what to think? God is omnipotent and evil exists so God must allow it or cause it.
Great article! Thank you for posting this!
Excellent Very insightful helpful article J. Thank You!
Think spiritual ! Behold God’s reality. Keep thought in high places with Truth and Love.
What a program !
It means to me, stop listening to world news and conflicts and keep thinking about God’s reality, divine Love and Truth, omnipresent and omnipotent universal, impartial…
There is no opposite to God, good, and that is what,, dear, you are presenting to suffering humanity, … pure Christian Science , Thank you !
You nailed it Evan! Thank you Susan for the analogy. Love it. Thank you Cat for that reminder also. Thank you everyone. Proof there is only one Mind. Just had an in depth conversation with family members on this very subject.
Truth is faithful. It will never leave you where it found you.
When I was in Christian Science Sunday School, I specifically remember the warmth that I felt when reading the weekly bible lesson. That warm was fully expressed by members of the church that warmth to me was the expression of spiritual sense. Walking towards that warmth is what lead back to Christian Science years later. Spiritual sense exhitbits leaving the coldness of matter for the warm of truth and love; the compassion of Christ.
Fear never stopped being and its action. The blood, heart, lungs, brain, etc., have nothing to do with Life, God. Every function of the real man is governed by the divine Mind. The human mind has no power to kill or to cure, and it has no control over God’s man. The divine Mind that made man maintains His own image and likeness. The human mind is opposed to God and must be put off, as St. Paul declares. All that really exists is the divine Mind and its idea, and in this Mind the entire being is found harmonious and eternal. The straight and narrow way is to see and acknowledge this fact, yield to this power, and follow the leadings of truth.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 151:18)
Wonderful messages of where our thoughts should be! Thank you, Evan
and All. I have heard the analogy also, which corresponds with where we
are headed with our spiritual destination being foremost …. as likened to,
being in a car. We have one large windshield of which we can see where
we are headed, but only a small rear view mirror that shows where we have
been . That can be compared to our spiritual verses our “past” viewpoints.
Some of us may have those little mirrors on the side mirrors that show the
“blind spot” – perhaps representing mortal mind thinking along the way that
would try to trip us up – sneaking in without our realizing it. We have to be
ever so watchful and how wonderful when we truly are in tune with harmony
all around.
I am also very grateful for this week’ Sentinel
Watch with Evan. I’ve listened to it three times already and shared it with several others.
It is a keeper, it was also discussed my Wednesday meeting last night.
Thank you, thank you, Evan!
This reference (p. 151) has been my favorite page to work with for the past several months! NOTED that it says “the HUMAN mind is opposed to God and MUST be put off.” She says “human” mind, not “mortal” mind; elsewhere she makes it clear there is NO “mortal” mind. But the “human” SENSE of mind is entirely personal SENSE & is opposed to God and MUST be put off. That’s noteworthy!
Loved Evan’s comments today as per usual, they point to gaining the spiritual sense of Consciousness that dispels & disproves the material SENSE of awareness.
Thank you Evan for the link to your Sentinel Watch of July 28 which was excellent and for the link to your August 14 Sentinel article. Your thoughts on how to pray when angry at a person doing evil were most helpful:
“I showered that leader with spiritual love, affirming that God did not create any power that could harm another; that any evil this person manifested was not part of his true, spiritual individuality and would inevitably destroy itself; and that divine justice would have the final say.”
It is very interesting too see this right now Evan , as a friend and I have been discussing Lazarus coming out of the tomb form the point of view that first there was resurrection (healing) then the process of “Loosing ” him from the graveclothes… and actually we asked Chat GPT to answer a question we had form a CS point of view and this is what the last 3 lines said. (The rest was spot on too BTW!)
This explanation might also help “LOL” (above)
. “Loose him” = Ongoing Release
Even after something begins to heal, the remnants of the old mindset or emotional entanglements can still bind us. So the second command is crucial:
“Loose him, and let him go.”
That could represent:
Forgiveness (of self or others)
Letting go of a false identity tied to illness, victimhood, or sin
Breaking free from toxic thinking or behaviours
Community involvement, as others help “unbind” us
Notice: Jesus didn’t unbind Lazarus himself—he asked the people around to do it. That could symbolize how healing often involves others walking with us, helping us fully integrate the change.
3. The Connection to Sin or Thought
In some spiritual traditions, especially within Christian metaphysics (like in Christian Science, Unity, or certain contemplative traditions), wrong thought or separation from divine truth is seen as the root of illness or bondage.
From this lens:
The “sin” isn’t necessarily a moral failure but a false belief, a disconnection from divine reality.
To be fully healed, we must release not just the physical condition but the mental/emotional cause—the thought-pattern that gave it space.
So Yes—Your Insight Is Profound:
A healing may begin with a spiritual spark or change in thought, but there’s often a process of loosening, layer by layer.
Sometimes we need to ask: What “graveclothes” am I still wrapped in, even after I’ve come alive again?
And also: Who or what in my life helps me be “loosed”? Or am I willing to help someone else be loosed?
I found this post extremely helpful Evan and also everyone’s comments which I am reading through!
