Do you get upset over politics?

May 7, 2012 | 5 comments

A man reported that he was ready to move out of the USA because he was so angry over current government policies, prevalent political ideologies and politicians upholding them.

I find great peace in my prayers for my country in remembering that God alone has the final say on all important matters affecting the people. Human policies and political ideologies come and go, but the divine government reigns forever.

Like the earth turns on its axis every 24 hours whether you like it or not, every human policy, belief and law is subject to inevitable scrutiny by divine Principle, and if it doesn’t hold true to the divine ideal, it will be removed, improved or replaced.

I also recognize my responsibility to support good government by actively praying for politicians to make wise progressive decisions. Anger, resentment and hatred, spewed out towards those in office, does not make healthy decision-making easier. Quite to the contrary, it stirs negative emotions and leads to poor choices. Love, compassion, forgiveness, mercy, and their kin keep the mental lines of communication with God open and allow for intelligent and wise ideas from above to be heard by those who need to hear them.

To make a positive contribution to decision-making in our government, it helps to be on hand to do something about it, to pray about it and let one’s position be felt! It’s harder to be a major player when you mentally and physically flee the premises where the action is taking place.

So, if you’re upset over government, let the anger go, and start pouring on the love and wisdom that makes government better for everyone. Your prayers do make a difference, a positive difference! Anger and hatred do not help anyone, especially you.

  1. Thanks so much. I needed that!! I have been working to understand that God governs, the the Lord is the Lawgiver, the judge and the king. But frustration and judging the politicians’ judgment, ethics and honesty has been a challenge to me. Your thoughts are very helpful in reining in my critical view of these individuals and in remembering that my thoughts and positive prayer will help the situation more than my condemnation!!

  2. Hi, Evan. This article should be posted on USA Today, with a couple word changes to make it clear that you aren’t really suggesting that everyone should converge on the White House. (“It’s harder to . . . .where the action is taking place.”). Great article.

  3. “Amen, brother”! My reply when pressed is that I am more prayerful than political—–but it is necessary to be diligent about the praying. Thanks for the reminder.

  4. A timely comment, Evan. I was awake in the night realizing that I have allowed my political universe to become infested with some negative types. Since it is my dream, I can’t expect someone else to go in and clean it up. I must do it by remembering the basics of Christian Science that evil is not a person, place or thing. There is no such thing as an evil, selfish person ruining my universe. Every person reflects the one beautiful, good, all harmonious being of God. Then where did this evil come from? It has no action, no place, no person, no object in God’s Mind, thus it will have none in mine. I will be more careful about what I read and will not let negative news go unchallenged.

  5. I like to remember what Isaiah states in 9:6, “and the government shall be upon His shoulder:”. I don’t need to be shouldering a sense of concern, since God governs.
