Fix your gaze on reality

April 11, 2025 | 16 comments

Where does your perspective rest each day?

Are you mentally focused on spiritual reality where the heart abounds with joy, thought soars with inspiration and health feels natural?

Mary Baker Eddy writes, “Fixing your gaze on the realities supernal, you will rise to the spiritual consciousness of being, even as the bird which has burst from the egg and preens its wings for a skyward flight” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 261).

A “spiritual consciousness of being,” is home for the child of God.  It’s a metaphysical place where thought readily agrees with Truth, easily reflects Love, and lives Life joyfully.

This heavenly consciousness is not found through material sense, for matter is the opposite of Spirit.  It’s impossible to find in matter what can only be found in Spirit.  So, the thought desiring something better looks elsewhere.  Away from matter to Spirit!

As the bird bursting from the egg, looks up and away from the nest for their next place to go, we can look up and away from material sense to spiritual sense, and find peace with God.

Fix your gaze on reality and keep it there!  It’s the happiest healthiest place to be.

  1. We walk in the direction from which we look..when we see good (God) we walk that pathway..
What a joy to follow in Christ’s pathway..He saw only good – even on the cross he saw others as good..”Father they know not what they do..
Easter..A good time to see only good on our pathway..

    1. Thank you John for your comment.
Yess, such a joy to walk in Christ’s pathway, and comforting to know that he saw only Good.

And thank you also for your article I recently read in our German Herold.

  2. I was curious about this bird that could fly almost as soon as hatched. It does exist in Indonesia. It is a Maleo and lays its eggs in the warm sand. How did she know about this bird?

    1. Hi Cathleen, that’s a good question. Mrs. Eddy must have read about this bird, in a book, or newspaper. Exploring the Jungles and other wild places was beloved pastime in her day, and earlier. Remember the seafaring expeditions 1400’s and 1500’s. I think most birds need their parents to feed them feed them for a few weeks before they are ready to fly. Still, I love Mrs. Eddys’ analogy, the little birds need to want to get ready, “preen their wings for an skyward flight”

    2. … Or could it be … that Mrs. Eddy had foreseen this type of heaven-
upward way of thinking as she did when she wrote, “The mariner
will have dominion over the atmosphere and the great deep, over
the fish of the sea and fowls of the air. The astronomer will no
longer look up to the stars, – he will look out from them upon the
universe; and the florist will find his flower before its seed”. (S&H -pg 125)
It could be like Jesus’ parable with the loaves and the fishes, that
fed the multitude. It was spiritual nutrition that I believe he was
referring to. But just as mother and father birds care for their young,
our Mother/Father God, cares for us.

  3. This is just the inspiration needed today. Thank You! I have never heard of
a maleo bird before. Quite fascinating. It looked like a prehistoric-dinosaur type
bird, so thank you, Cathleen, for the info you shared. Sometimes I feel like mortal
thinking has me back in prehistoric times and have to break the shell of this type
of thinking and preen wings into a more spiritual outlook where soul is ever present
and the feeling of being alone, with all the mortal challenges, is replaced by the
at one ment with God’s omnipresent Love. Will try to keep this in thought today.

  4. Thinking of the little bird (preening) straightening and cleaning it’s wings for a skyward flight.
So, straighten up and fly right is the message – at least for me.
    Love it! Thanks to all.

  5. I was in our elementary school one day .. visiting when the teacher brought out a new book..about the next life of Humptydumpty..after the Fall, when he’d been duck-taped back up, and was left as a loner .. looking odd. So he applied his curiosity to study…with rulers and graphs etc..What really worked was that.. The shell broke ..and off he flew!! I was so surprised and as awed !! as the children that this.. the perfect answer like in C Science was right there.. ready to be proven.
Never.. To be stuck, in the first stage.. It’s taken long time for Humptydumpty.. to Get IT..That the rhyme had kept us bonded and now we are set free.
This was given as a way to help children, as my mother would say. ‘Rise above it..”
that somehow it was cleverly presented in the school system is wise indeed.
Thank you for having a place to share the glory.. of the story.!

    1. I love this story❣️ Infinite possibilities!
      Thank you for sharing, Tina.

This SV was particularly helpful – thank you, Evan and all.

  6. Thanks Evan for reminding us we have full freedom, as spiritual beings, to choose to be “mentally focused on spiritual reality where the heart abounds with joy, thought soars with inspiration and health feels natural.”

We choose each day where we will place our focus and attention. Especially in these times with internet, social media, targeted algorithms. Our attention is a commodity which all marketers, politicians, media, are vigorously seeking. It’s called the Attention Ecomony, I saw this statement in a business article, “Your attention is the most valuable resource in the world.” So we need to choose very wisely and protect our thought, because so much is coming at us, pulling at us, demanding us to look here, look there, think this way or that.

I need a constant reminder to “fix my gaze on Reality,” so I can experience my natural state of Peace and Joy and Harmony. Sending Love to all here on SV.

  7. Thank you, dear Evan for this spiritual views of coming out of the nest, preens its wings and soaring joyfully up into heaven, above all mortal strife into spiritual Reality. It is just I do need, and this Morning I felt so well and joyful and the sun was shining, the light of Christ. I am very grateful for God’s day today!
Thank you all! Rose, me too, I do also need a steady reminder to “fix my gaze on divine Reality”. However, I am very grateful that studying the Lesson Sermon each day, helps me filling my mind with divine Mind’s spiritual, healing, so freeing and very needed ideas which let us soar up into spiritual REALITY. Very comforting I find the Truth of our oneness with divine Mind, caring for us.
To all a blessed Weekend soaring up into divine Reality!
