Form healthy agreements

December 4, 2015 | 17 comments

What are you agreeing to each day for future health? It’s important to know if you want to stay healthy and well for years to come.

If a child asks you for permission to go outside to play and you agree, you consent to their plan and concur that it is okay for them to go outdoors and play. And they likely will follow through with their desire.

The same rule applies to making agreements in thought.

If you look at a long to-do list and hear two different arguments in your mind, one being, “This list is too long. I’ll never get through it.” And the other, “This list is long, but with God’s help I will finish it.” You are going to live out whichever argument you agree to.

When you make an agreement, you commit yourself to following through. If you agree to failure, you’ve committed to failure. If you agree with success, you’ve committed to success.

This rule is important to understand when it comes to demonstrating health, because thought is generally assaulted everyday by arguments about health through the press, friends, neighbors and strangers that would deprive one of health. All types of arguments are presented about food, age, heredity, disease and contagion that would make a person feel endangered just to be alive! And each time we hear an argument, we either agree or disagree. There is no in the middle.

So, it’s important to agree only with health!

The truth is that we live in God’s universe where divine Love is in control of our health. Health is not a variable state of matter. It is a permanent condition of Mind that we reflect as an image of God. It is not controlled by food, passing time, genes, or disease. It is the outcome of God in operation through us, and God is unchangeable perfection.

As children of God, we reflect unchangeable, permanent and predictable health!

So, be vehement to disagree with any proposition, argument, opinion, or belief that would cause you to consent to a loss of health. You don’t have to lose your health. That is not a choice you are required to make. You can choose to stay well.

Millions of people may believe that the loss of health is inevitable for a myriad of reasons, but that doesn’t mean you have to agree with their beliefs and live them out.

Paul instructed, “Come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord” II Cor. 6:17, NLT.

You can choose to “come out” from any mortal mind conclusions that are not in your best interest to serve.

Agree with spiritual truth. Agree with God. Agree to stay healthy!

  1. Thank you Evan! How important it is to watch thought continually, discard false concepts of health, and focus on God as the only cause of true health.

At work we recently moved to a new building. My office in the new building is at the end of a long hall. Last night on my way out of the building I ran into a co-worker I had not seen for a while and he commented “Wow, your office is way down the hall!” I chuckled and said “Yeah, but all the extra steps are good for me.”

After leaving work I stopped by the grocery store and on the way into the store it hit me what I had said. Do I really think taking extra steps each day is a requirement for good health? Or am I really a spiritual idea with no material component? A spiritual idea that is not subject to constantly changing “material health laws”? I immediately identified with my spiritual identity and mentally discarded the false ideas that caused me to mindlessly make that comment to my co-worker.

In thinking about this more I realized that many companies are now making “activity tracking” devices…devices that are worn on your wrist and track how many steps a day you take. These companies are promoting, and profiting from, the idea that health is dependent on how many steps a day a person takes and I unwittingly allowed myself to accept this idea. Whoa! I then considered how easily we can be tricked into accepting these types of ideas. Therefore, your reminder about guarding thought from any idea that is contrary to God’s nature of perfect health makes me especially appreciate your posting today. So thanks again!!!

  2. thank you Evan. You put it into clear and easy to remember terms. It is important to always look to our thoughts and see what we agree with. this goes into my spiritual tool box.

  3. Thank you for this post; excellent.
And thank you Brian for your response.
Having been in the holistic health movement for years, I still find myself interested and looking at the newest ways of convincing people of how to stay healthy. :))
I’m so very grateful to continue learning about people’s spiritual journeys and thank God for your generosity of sharing!

  4. Thank you, Evan, for this wonderful post! I have just recently been working to improve my “watch” –watching my thought more closely to refute negative thoughts and let in the Christ, and your post is right on target for me today! Thanks again.

  5. I love your definition of health, Evan. It is not a bodily condition at all. “It is a permanent condition of Mind that we reflect as an image of God.” Permanent! Just as we prove the truth of a mathematical equation so we must prove the spiritual truth declared. Insist on the spiritual fact and stay there no matter what the world is presenting to us! Thank you, Evan, this is good stuff!

  6. So Good Evan! And I just read something in this week’s C.S. Bible Lesson that pertains to this. Here’s how Mrs. Eddy puts it in her Wonderful Book on How to Stay Healthy…….Science and Health: “Stand porter at the door of thought. Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you will control yourself harmoniously.” We are in control of our bodies as we stay alert and exercise our right to choose!

  7. This A.M. as I was doing my studying consisting of reading the lesson and articles from the Sentinel & Journal I was having the sniffles. I took a stand to deny any thought of what one would refer to as a cold. I chose to include in my study this morning a rereading of “A Treatment For Every Day” – Christian Science Journal, 1883, Mary Baker Eddy to give me reinforcement. Thank you Evan for your Blog and those of you who have contributed with your comments as they are additional reinforcement. Yes! I am healthy – no sniffles

  8. It is interesting how humans forget their past. Ther was less talk about disease in my family as I grew up which equaled better health. There was more talk about the political than about food, exercise and how to improve the way the body looked. Now things and ideas have changed where there are more diseases than just a few years ago and no one can profess an answer as to the reasons for this except CHRISTIAN SCIENCE.

  9. Thanks Evan. Instead of making “to do” lists, I make “to love” lists. God doesn’t have any to do lists because his work is already done. Having a “to love” list reminds me of who I am doing it for, what really needs to be done, and how to do it. Doing things with love makes for a much more harmonious day. And thanks Evan for all you do. I know you do ti with love.

  10. Thanks so much, Evan, for this very helpful blog, and all of the contributors for their comments. I would like to respond to Dennis as the source I have for “A Treatment For Every Day” is different. I received this from the Mary Baker Eddy Library in response to an inquiry I made and was told it was from a “Letter dated 1895 by Mary Baker Eddy, in the Sentinel, July 25, 1936.” I have the following quote which I include with my daily morning prayers:
“May the light of Divine love so illumine your mind that you behold yourself in His likeness, even as you are the image of perfect Mind. Thus you will find all power, wisdom, and peace in goodness, and demonstrate the grace of Spirit as ever sufficient to help you in every time of need.” I have underlined “demonstrate” and “every time of need” in my notes.

  11. This article came up when I looked up comments about “treatment” & Mary Baker Eddy. THE MARY BAKER EDDY LIBRARY

IT SAYS IT’S BY MARY BAKER EDDY—BUT IS IT REALLY?
    BY MICHAEL R. DAVIS
From the April 2008 issue of The Christian Science Journal
