Is it time to get off

July 27, 2010 | 3 comments

At the Humor Conference I attended last June, I was listening to Sister Anne Somllin speak about finding more joy in life and dealing with people that carry toxic attitudes.

At one point, she was talking about neighbors who whine and complain about their troubles and woes and harbor a heavy attitude that makes life unpleasant for others. These are typically individuals who feel sorry for themselves, believe they have more than their share of burden, figure everyone else is better off than them, and on and on…

Without missing a beat, Smollin quipped, “Sometimes you just want to say to these people, ‘Get off the cross, we need the wood.’”

A keeper!

We laughed and laughed…all able to relate.

  1. Oh, a keeper indeed! Surely one of God’s given attributes is laughter–a sense of humor! Rather a good nudge for myself, too, to get off a particular train of negative thought.

  2. I agree it is difficult to be around folks who complain/whine, but I do feel that compassion is so needed to be shown them. I’ve been a complainer myself when I didn’t really see anyway out of the situation I was in–it’s really a kind of call for help. Thank goodness for Christian Science. I was thinking of church this morning and ‘whatever rests on and proceeds from Divine Love’ Thank goodness someone loved enough to place a CS Sentinel and CS Journal where I found them, and from that has come so much good in my life that I don’t need to complain anymore! So don’t let complainers spoil your life, love them enough to give that cup of cold water that will change their outlook! 🙂
