When praying for resolution of a problem, it can help to get specific about what law of God applies to the situation you are facing.
For example, in math, when presented with a problem, you have to decide what law of math to apply to that problem before you can make any headway. You might ask, “Does this problem require me to apply the law of addition, subtraction, multiplication or division?” If you apply the law of addition when you should be subtracting, well, you aren’t going to successful.
The same rule applies when solving life’s problems. Different scenarios require different solutions.
For instance, if dealing with sickness that is the result of sin, knowing that sickness is not real is not going to help much. The law of sinless man must be applied and demonstrated first before that sickness is going to yield. Or if facing lack because thought is lazy, applying the law of infinite abundance might not help at all until the law of usefulness is applied and demonstrated.
So, what is your specific need? There is a law of God to meet it. Like a lawyer hired to protect a client from false accusation searches his law books for the specific law to defend his client, we too need to search the law books of the Bible and Science and Health, to find the specific law that meets out particular need. Once we find it and apply it, we have what we need to silence the false accuser.
This is a great example of the practical use of Christian Science. Thanks for the assurance.
Great!!!
As a Christian Science student to diagnose exactly which law to apply is the hardest part. Sometimes the situation is foggy and we can’t see it clearly.
I often seems to take much searching and listening to determine the exact law which applies to the problem. Mrs. Eddy tells us to decided quickly how we will proceed to treat a problem . And she did not use argument very often. Trial and error is not how we want to solve problems. So is there a more sure way to find the specific law so that, as Solange wrote, the way doesn’t seem foggy?
One way to zero in on an appropriate law of God is to start with the 7 synonyms for God. And ask the question, Which synonym is most appropriate to bring a solution? Life, Truth, Love… And then apply the reality of that synonym to the situation. Each synonym constitutes a law of God to the universe and how it operates and runs.
This is wonderful! I’m going to do it right now!
Thank you Evan but what if you don’t know? I’m wrestling with aggressive coughingthat is now painful deep in my chest and my head, and lost voice for several days and don’t seem to be making any headway even with a practitioner. I know that I’m not trying to avoid work although I’ve missed three days now. I remember thinking earlier that I’m never sick… 🙁
Perhaps apply the Law of Harmony, in your case. The Law of Harmony is constantly at work causing everything in your life to work together peacefully. This law governs the body and your health…and your relationships, and work, family, and everything else, ruling out conflict and disease.
Wow! what a wonderful clear thought and approach.
In overcoming sickness, for example, there might be an human emotional attitude that’s causing the sickness. One has to ask God, what that attitude is then realize it and there you have the answer to work from.
Thank you, Evan!
BBasic is the thought presented. Working in an orderly manner as presented to reach a solution requires a goal, ” I will listen for they voice” ” I will follow ” When tuning a radio station, it may be fuzzy to start, but it has a clearn signal.
Evan keep reviewing the basic path and the goal will become clearer to those(us) searching.
This is something we all need to know. Thanks for explaining it so clearly.
Evan, thanks so much for your helpful response to Wendy. Starting with the 7 names for God: Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Life, Truth and Love, is certainly a good beginning for identifying a specific law to a problem.
A fantastic blog today and I appreciate everyone’s comments. I have been struggling to understand and apply the laws of CS.
Evan’s response to Wendy and Solange is helpful and I will hopefully be able to apply in the future.
When I am uncertain how to deal with a challenge, I turn to the Word of God for guidance and include verses in my prayers.
Including the Word is praying God’s will into a challenge/situation – such as using verses on healing, seeking wisdom and direction, or how to deal with problems etc.
I, too, am especially resonating with today’s SpiritView…
God knows our needs. The Principle of 2+2+4 is intact. Our divine Principle, God, Mind, Love, Spirit, Soul, Life…is intact, and delivering the exact need to counter an erro, seemingly in human thought and actions (though we know God’s idea, man never has a problem!).
When we go to Truth for the exact, scientific fact we seem (seem, seem!!) to be lacking, or can’t identify, or can’t real-ize,
Truth is right there, on the job, supplying it.
We can KNOW this supply cannot be hidden from us! There is no real power or force that can make us dream, or make the lie seem real!
Illusions are not real. Therefore, focusing on the illusion is not helpful, obviously. We look beyond and above it, to the reality. This clears the mist, in proportion to our focus.
Right, Evan?
And ALL the power of Truth, of God, Good, is behind this action!
Amen

Thank you very much, Evan, for your very clear explanation, how to work with the 7 synonyms of GOD – actually we learned that in sunday school – wonderful!
Here’s a great Christian Science Journal article related to this blog topic that I’ve found very helpful:

Great tips and examples,Evan. Working with the synonyms is helpful. Thank you.
