Learning from God

January 20, 2014 | 11 comments

I spend considerable time learning about God through my daily study of the Bible, Science and Health, and other inspired works. Then one day, it was pointed out by another that it’s also important to spend time learning from God.

Aw, a fresh approach, I thought.

Not that I haven’t been doing it in the past, but now I do it consciously.

Learning from God is different than learning about God.

Learning about God can feel like an acquisitioning activity. Like adding coins to a coin jar, starting with a small amount, over time the stash grows larger and larger, but all the while the horde idles in a canister doing nothing.

Learning from God is not an accumulating activity, but a listening feat. It requires one to put all selfish learning goals aside and discern what God has to say.

It takes a wide open mind, a willing heart and an adventuresome spirit to mindfully follow where divine Mind hearkens, for Truth often takes us to new and brave places we’ve never been before.

To learn from God, when I open the Bible or Science and Health to read, I ask, “What is God telling me today?” Instead of holding preconceived notions of what I think I need to learn when I read, I listen for what God has to teach. It’s a fun, adventuresome, refreshing way to study and new discoveries abound.

Mary Baker Eddy used to frequently open her Bible at random to hear what God had to say, and her prayer would be instantly answered.

Learning about God is important, but learning from God is even more essential. Listen keenly today, and discern what the voice of Wisdom has for you to learn.

  1. Lovely article indeed Evan. We all need to learn from God who is our best teacher, our Guide n friend, who loves us so dearly. Thanks so much.

  2. Never thought of it this way. Always, even right now, doing my Bible Lesson to learn about God. But now comes something new to me, what God is telling me. I haven’t done my lesson yet but when I do—-. A little prayer. “Father, tell me what I should learn today, how I should perform my duties to you and mankind?”

  3. A prayer from Psalms in the Christian Science Bible Lesson this week on Truth says: Show me your ways, O God; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me.” I loved reading that, had the same thought about how important it is to go straight to God for information (in addition to our reading). Then I opened your blog just now, and voila, you have reinforced my “aha” revelation about God as Teacher! I am going to listen for His voice all day. See what happens! Thanks as always, Evan. You write so beautifully and clearly.

  4. Thank you Evan for a reminder that their is a difference in learning about God and learning from God. Listening rather than just reading. WOW!!

  5. It was helpful to me to read about learning from God, and clearly distinguishing that from learning about God. Many thanks!

  6. I just realize that we learn all the time from God, as the Bible and Science and Health are the Word of God 🙂
