I enjoyed watching this short video of a man who served 8 years in San Quentin, and came out with a more positive outlook of who he was and what he could do, thanks to an arts project in his community that supported his talent.
I cherish two of his quotes. One, that it was no benefit to him to feel sorry for himself or to get mired in “woe-me,” thinking, and two, that being homeless does not mean being hopeless.

Arts of all sorts tap into people’s soul. They encourage humanity.
They should be considered an essential part of school as well as incarceration. Arts are wonderful ways to express God. Even if someone is not good at it, it still gives them a chance to express creativity, express Soul.
And that is a blessing to all!
Wonderful! As an artist I believe we all desire to express our creator God by being creative. I have taught art to people of all ages for many years. Someone once asked me, “But what if they don’t have any talent?” It’s not about talent, it’s about the opportunity to be creative. Expressing creativity in whatever way is very satisfying and fulfilling. Even graffti which was once considered vandelism and a eyesore is now being recognized on some levels as a creative outlet; a desire to express oneself in an original and unique way, And this is a quality of Soul. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our prisons became an entrance level opportunity for this kind of growth?
As an artist, I agree you. It is more than talent.
