The Right Road
O Lord, God,
I have no idea where I am going,
I do not see the road ahead of me,
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself.
And the fact that I think I am following your will
Does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
Does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire
in all that I am doing.
…I will trust you always
Though I may seem to be lost
And in the shadow of death
I will not fear,
And you are ever with me,
And you will never leave me
To make my journey alone.
~ Thomas Merton
What a wonderful road ! Do you know where it is ?
Thanks for the poem !
It must be Cherry Blossom Road, in Imagination, USA!
The poem reminds me of something in Mary Baker Eddy’s Scoence and Health: “The wintry blasts of earth may uproot the flowers of affection, and scatter them to the winds; but this severance of fleshly ties serves to unite thought more closely to God…” (p.57)
And the gorgeous photo makes me think of a companion piece to that thought found in Eddy’s Miscellaneous Writings, that talks about the period after the wintry blasts – “Voices of Spring”. She writes, “As mortals awake from their dream of material sensation, this adorable, all-inclusive God, and all earth’s hieroglyphics of Love, are understood…”
Thank you so much, Evan, for this poem. It is perfect for what I have been feeling lately. And I appreciate Michelle’s comments.
