No more muscle spasms

If you play any type of sport, Christian Science can play an invaluable role in keeping you healthy and well.

I was playing competitive tennis a couple of weeks ago, when during one game, the muscles in one of my legs seized up and threatened to cripple my play. I still had another three hours to play and pulling out of the tournament was unthinkable.

I started to pray on court for a quick healing.

The first suggestion I was lambasted with was, “You’ve overdone it. You’re playing too much tennis in a short period of time.” I had played six hours of vigorous tennis the evening before and was now in another six-hour period of straight playing the next afternoon.

I quickly corrected the suggestion with spiritual truth, knowing that I was a spiritual being, living in the body of Spirit that never tires, wears out, gets overtaxed, strained, or stressed. I knew that I was the same spiritual man that I had always been. I affirmed that playing tennis was a way of expressing God that leads to no harm, but to ever growing expressions of boundless activity and freedom of movement.

I also knew that the muscles of divine Mind are not vulnerable material creations of limited and questionable capacity, but divine thought forces of Love and Life that flourish and thrive when used. They are of infinite capacity and boundless activity. They exist to be used, not convalesced.

As I prayed during points, I found peace with my situation and trusted that all would be well. The muscles calmed down and I was able to keep playing.

The suggestion of trouble popped up another couple of times over the next 15 minutes, but I quickly put them back down with the on-going prayer of, “I’m spiritual. I’m alright. I’m okay. I’m the same unchangeable perfect child of God that I’ve always been, and I flourish in living true to this truth.” At some point, I forgot about the leg, for it was healed.

I went on to play another 3 hours of intense tennis, with no thought or worry about spasms. A few days later, I remembered my healing, and was grateful for the quick recovery.

  1. Thank you, Evan ! I am so grateful for the wonderful healings you share here with all of us, and for telling us how you prayed. What speaks especially to me just now in this testimony, is that you knew “that I was a spiritual being, LIVING IN THE BODY OF SPIRIT that never tires, wears out, gets overtaxed, strained, or stressed.” Thank you so very much !

  2. I love knowing the truth about my muscles that I am strengthening:
“. . . the muscles of divine Mind are not vulnerable material creations of limited and questionable capacity, but divine thought FORCES OF LOVE AND LIFE that flourish and thrive when used. They are of infinite capacity and boundless activity. They exist to be used, not convalesced.” WOW!!! My muscles and bones are of infinite capacity and boundless activity, too. So very grateful!!!

  3. What a wonderful healing Evan. And it is so very helpful to read about your prayer process to deal with it.
I had a bit of an aha moment recently ( I know most of our SVs would be way passed this!) …when I realised that any problem we encounter albeit showing on our body, is in fact NOT our problem but simply our giving credence to erroneous mortal mind. 100 x nothing is still nothing…
Thank you Evan…Game, set and match to God ❣️

  4. Wow! I was just going to look up what Mrs. Eddy had to say about muscles as I’m dealing with something. Decided to check email first and saw this wonderful healing! Thank you!

  5. the muscles of divine Mind = divine thought forces of Love and Life that flourish and thrive when used

  6. I,too, so appreciate reading this healing, Evan, and how you prayed. So inspirational and instructional for handling any suggestions from the body. Thank you!!

  7. I love the thought that I am living in the body of Spirit. This is a very helpful and timely message Evan. Thank you

  8. Loved it. Thanks so much Evan. I love the definition of man on page 475 in our textbook and refer to it often. “Man is not matter, he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, or other material elements…”

  9. I thought what a wonderful demonstration to play a vigorous athletic game as tennis for many hours and for consecutive days. How wonderful is that?
I am challenged to go for a walk for a half mile. Yesterday I did go for a twenty-five minute walk.
It was after a call for help in that I was feeling poorly. I had prayed that I could go for this walk to clear my thought. After a few moments of prayer I got up and invited my wife to walk with me.
I would like to once again, run like as when I was a boy. I am grateful for all my steps.
After I woke up this morning I had cramps in my lower legs. I prayed similar truths and all was well. But playing vigorous games like tennis is way out of my comfort zone. Perhaps some day!
Thank you Evan for sharing this freedom with us this morning.

  10. Evan I loved your word ‘lambasted’ to describe how error was trying to attack your thought. It means attack, condemn, chastise, criticize. So familiar. But you had the right answers to send error packing, the truth that your harmony in God was the same yesterday, today and forever. Error may try to knock on the door of our consciousness, but we can grow in our ability to see its falseness and evaporate its influence. Makes me recall pop song from the 1970’s that says, “I hear you knocking, but you can’t come in, I hear you knocking, go back where you been.” Good day to all!

  11. Whoa! Thank you, dear Evan! Powerful testimony! Thank you so much for sharing it!

Also, huge thanks to everyone for their comments!

    Much love to you all!

  12. WOW! Between this week’s lesson, SV and the Daily Lift!!! and “Impossibilities never occur” MBE,
I have a lot to work with today.
    Many thanks Evan et al!

  13. Dear Evan,- Such a wonderful example for us how you pray so effectively “on the go” while doing what you love to do. Thank you so much for showing us how quick and natural healing can be when Truth is acknowledged and applied. The lessons you share from your life experience shine as a beacon to us all.

  14. Another WOW! Dear Evan’s story plus EVERY single comment has helped me this AM.
Out the window goes discouragement and in fly ALL the wonderful, helpful
spiritual thoughts from dear SV friends, My gratitude cup runneth over!

  15. Thanks Evan. I’ve been applying some of the same truths to my activity of late: first 11 days of skiing in Colorado – the suggestion of a back problem popped up the first day – since God didn’t recognize that, I was able to toss the suggestion to the garbage bin. Then when we got back I went out for a 20 mile dirtbike ride in the desert east of Bend. The next two days my calfs were so stiff I could hardly walk – so some sincere prayer was needed to toss that false suggestion to the garbage bin and this week, after skiing one day and dirtbike riding the next and having the false suggestion that the back was feeling it and gee, hope those calfs don’t stiffen up again, I got busy with prayer knowing that that was all they were, false suggestions with no power. I kept that prayer up through the dirtbike ride and can say, today, that I am fine, no back issues and no calf issues. Hooray! Thank you Father-Mother God!

  16. Thank you, thank you, Evan! What a helpful, valuable, and inspiring CS prayer example here. And this topic is especially dear to my heart. I am so grateful that you do this blog/site which assists me as I strive to approach life more scientifically in my thinking and speaking.

  17. I appreciate this testimony so much. I rose and had the thought that I could walk and I did, further and more confidently than in years and without any props, which I was using. Thank, Evan!
    Don

  18. Thank you all for your comments and Evan for your testimony. The article on Functions was so timely for anyone and everyone in any generation as this war written in 1935.
