Seek significant accomplishment

What was your most significant accomplishment yesterday, last week, last year, over the last decade?

Accomplishment is measured in many different ways by different people. For some, accomplishment is earning more money, fame, notoriety, for others, having children and nurturing a family, building meaningful relationships, for others, recreation, time on the golf course, retirement, idling in the sun. And the list goes on.

But what is the one accomplishment that is going to matter the most in the long run? Is it the accumulated wealth, one’s position in their community, recreation that can grow stale, or even family and relationships that can endure for a time then fall victim to competing interests or even death?

Success in career, family and fulfillment have their role to play in a purposeful life, but there is one accomplishment above all others that brings the whole human experience together in the most meaningful way and for the greatest good in the long run. And it’s what we learn about God.

What we learn about God permeates every activity we are involved with and blesses it.

God is all the good we could ever hope for. God is our Life. God is Truth. God is the Principle of the universe. God is yesterday, today and tomorrow. God is All. God is the source of all health, happiness, meaning, value and worth. When you have God, you have anything and everything that could possibly matter.

Fortune comes and goes. Fame fades. Family members can go separate ways. Relationships can change, even disappear. But God is forever.

What you learn about God delivers you from the shortcomings of the world and lifts you to the blessings of heaven. What you learn about God always takes you to a better place in thought and experience. What you learn about God helps you defeat evil, suffering, lack and loss. What you learn about God will bless you more than any other knowledge you could possibly gain.

What you learn about God is the most significant accomplishment of all.

  1. This is exactly what i needed to hear this morning. It brought to mind, “O God, I cast my care on Thee; I triumph and adore; Henceforth my great concern shall be To love and praise Thee more.” From Hymn 224. Thank you, Evan, for this reminder.

  2. Big Thanks, Evan! I’ve realized my goal this lifetime is to learn to Love more…..to “wait and Love more for every Hate……..” This Life is too short to hang on to old Family Hurts and Resentments – it is time to Let It All Go and just Love! And since we know that God IS Love, then I guess that learning to Love from an unconditional Heart is Learning about God and Living God! I think that’s what Jesus came to Teach and Demonstrate here on Earth. And By the Way, thanks for that wonderful C.S. Lecture in Atlanta, GA you shared with us yesterday! You helped to clear up so many misconceptions about Christian Science, both for non-CSers, as well as for CSers! Very Courageous! Much Love!

    1. I discovered that what Mrs. Eddy said about “we are all capable of more than we do” is true. We had a large house with close to two acres of land and this had become a burden to us because the belief of aging said it was too much for us to maintain. We were far from family. Our son and daughter were urging us to move close to one of them. This thought was overwhelming – packing and moving, downsizing, etc. A condo next to our son became available. My husband felt unable to assist in anything required for a move. I clung to the statement that we were all capable of more than we do. I started disposing of things we no longer needed. Through prayer I knew this was a right move. The house was listed with a Realtor and sold within three weeks of the time it was listed, and our move went smoothly. We now have family all around us – our condo is just the right size and is easily maintained. My heart overflows with gratitude for the teachings of Christian Science – I know God is in control if we just listen and take action.

  3. Thank you Evan! So true. Our relationship with God is the prize and goal. It is then getting the horse before the cart… and thank you for the absolutely wonderful lectures both in New York and Atlanta ((:
@ Bevi, it dawned on me this Christmas that the message in “Christmas Morn ” hymn by Mary Baker Eddy “… Thou gentle beam of living Love and deathless life” is about all of us. I always thought about Christ Jesus when singing this hymn, but a voice said to me “no cradle song, no natal hour and mother’s tear, To thee belong” is about all of us. The Christ is the Truth about each of us. Yay.
    Happy New Year everyone!

  4. We set goals. You have nicely set the road map that God has laid out “look unto Me and be yea saved. . . ” Make fewer wrong turns. Be greatful at each enter section that Mind is pointing the way.

  5. Thank you Evan. And perfect timing given that this is the time of year people make resolutions for the new year ahead.

I’d also like to reinforce that learning to *apply* our understanding of God is very important. A few years ago I realized I knew a lot about God but I wasn’t doing a very good job of applying that knowledge. At that time I was suffering from a number of long held, and unhealed, problems. I had tried praying to resolve those problems but I wasn’t successful. So I started reading the lesson and the periodicals with an eye toward learning better techniques to use in praying and that focus has been very helpful to me. I’ve since been able to use that better understanding of how to apply an understanding of God to everyday situations to heal those long held problems.

I guess what I’m trying to say is summed up in James 1:24-25.

For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

In my case I would read the lesson and learn about God but then when I started my day I would forget what I learned, or at least not stick to that knowledge and apply it. It wasn’t until I learned better how to apply that knowledge, and was consistent in holding to the truth minute-by-minute, that I started seeing the goodness of God in my daily experience.

  6. Thank you for this wonderful reminder that the world does not always understand what lies behind it’s symbolism. I have enjoyed a year of study and contemplation of the Way of Life that I had prayed for, for years. My study of the Bible has been greatly helped by many great Truth teachers, and I count Mary Baker Eddy as one of them.

  7. My significant accomplishment is the demonstration of getting out of the hospital this week, (Spent 10 full days) in the midst of dire reports that I would have complications which never happened due to my understanding of C/S

  8. Way to Go, Tobias! We’re All Loving and Supporting you! You Go! “With God, All Things Are Possible”!!

  9. Evan,
You are amazing! I so enjoying reading your blogs and listening to your YouTube lectures and short clips. “God is forever”. Amen! I often think deeply about what you are conveying to us in simple illustrations. Most recently I listened to your “Making a good chose” YouTube. When I have made decisions and I have prayed about it I do get that “feel good feeling” that peace that comes over me, yet you refer to go with what is “spiritually right”. How does one know the difference? Right now I am struggling with whether to sell an old rental property and buying newer ones in order to get a higher return. On the surface it certainly is right to do so, however, I am not getting the green light to do so. When and how will I know what is “spiritually right”?
The best to you and your family for 2016….everyday!

    1. HI Syl,

The “spiritually right,” is going to be a spiritually progressive step. The real issue for you has more to do with supply. Be clear that all supply comes from God, and its coming in abundance. It’s fresh, vital, appropriate for the moment, timely, just right, exactly what is needed. There is no lack, ever. Once you are clear about the spiritual truth, any apparent human steps you should take to demonstrate that spiritual truth will be apparent. If the steps are not apparent yet, that means you need to keep praying and listening until the way is clear. It’s not a bad sign. Patience is often a crucial part of acting at the appropriate time, on God’s schedule, not the human mind’s. You are in a good place right now, listening, watching, and acting when God tells you to.

      1. Thank you Evan for your inspiration and being so in tune to what the issue is. I never thought of it as supply since that is not a present need. I will ponder that and call you!

  10. Hi Evan. Wish you and your family A Very Happy New Year. Thanks so very much for the most uplifting inspiration shared with us. You are so very right – God is forever, everything else is temporary and fleeting. Its only God’s selfless, unconditional, constant, permanent love for us which fills us with happiness and satisfaction. Human love is vain and for a while.
Since God alone is the source of our happiness, and He eliminates all our sufferings, lack and loss, it’s indeed very wise to learn more about Him and be blessed and happy.
