Seek truth, not opinion

December 12, 2017 | 17 comments

Do you have any friends or neighbors who are quick to share their opinion with you about what to think or what to do? I’d be surprised if you didn’t.

Many people are happy to share their opinion, and even become aggressive about pushing their point of view upon others. They may tell you how to vote, what job to take, who to date or not date, where to live, how to manage your money, or even dictate your healthcare choices.

It’s important to not become gullible to blindly following other people’s opinions, because they may be ill-informed, biased, prejudiced, or flat wrong.

To make intelligent choices, it’s best to be influenced by truth which comes to us through spiritual reasoning rather than personal sense.

I found these references from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, enlightening:

“Human opinions are not spiritual. They come from the hearing of the ear, from corporeality instead of from Principle, and from the mortal instead of from the immortal” page 192.

“In Christian Science mere opinion is valueless” page 341.

“The one Mind, God, contains no mortal opinions. All that is real is included in this immortal Mind” page 399.

“Science makes no concessions to persons or opinions” page 456.

God’s opinion is the only point of view that matters. God has the final say, the final word, and makes the final verdict. When you side with God, you’ll always be safe, and the effect of your decisions will always bring good results.

Of course, another aspect of the above truth is that your opinion is valueless too. What God thinks and wants is all that matters.

“Thy will be done.”

  1. Wonderful!

Love this, especially the last paragraph,

“Of course, another aspect of the above truth is that your opinion is valueless too. What God thinks and wants is all that matters.”

Something I must watch over in my daily round . . . ♡

  2. Spot on Evan.
The human ego always wants to be heard and seen.
I often remind myself that it is all about God not me.
Thank you for a very wise reminder.

  3. I love the reminder about our own opinions! Thank you! Thy will be done – so important tonremember and rely on. Thank you Evan. Merry Christmas to you and your family and SV family.

  4. Love it!

This also applies to my/our own opinions, too. I sometimes get caught up in trying to figure out what I “should” do, what would be “the best” way or thing. I end up getting nowhere with that course! Not until I am still, and listen for God’s guidance, does the right choice become apparent.

Human will is never the right answer, no matter whose it is! In addition to the wonderful quotes already shared, I’ll add one of my favorites:

“In patient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant of error, — self-will, self-justification, and self-love, — which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death.”

(SH 242:15 In, From Concord Express – A Christian Science Study Resource: The King James Version of the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy’s published writings)

  5. Dear Evan,

As always, today’s thoughts are ‘right on time’ … Garry, my husband, passed away very quickly Monday morning … shocking to my mortal mind. We both loved Mary Baker Eddy and her life-giving teachings … your teaching this morning is music to my ears … I humbly listen to divine Mind. Thank you!

    1. Hi Bonnie,

Right after reading your post today I happened to switch over to JSH-Online and clicked on the following poem. It seemed appropriate for your situation so I thought I’d share it with you.

My prayer today for you and everyone is to more fully realize that the gentle, loving, ever-presence of God is always with us supply our every need, comforting us, and tenderly loving us. And that we can always know that truth regardless of the spoken or unspoken opinions of others. Much love to you Bonnie!

      By REITA N. DONALDSON
From the February 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

      Do we think
      of love
      as a sometime thing,
      a little like sunshine?

      Divine Love
      never fades,
      never fails.

      God’s eternal embrace
      envelops the universe.
      Enough, indeed,
      for you and me.

      1. Much Love to you Bonnie, and thank you Brian, for the so loving and comforting poem by Reita N. Donaldson! 🙂

  6. Ellen: You are well on spot. We all seem to look to God for help when needed and not needed.
I find I am very comfortable with your comments because you search the fact when God is always present. I need to express my concerns and your reminder keeps me from making shot gun answers, when I need to lean on God more often.

  7. Evan, your blog is so timely. Opinions given through love and caring are not from God, the source of all good. We can express gratitude for the caring thought being shared, while maintaining our reliance on God to meet our every need, including healing. Each Christian Scientist works out his/her demonstration depending upon their individual needs.

  8. Much love to Bonnie and much gratitude to Brian for sharing such a a lovely message! Appreciate Evan and all who contribute to this blog. Know how much you all brighten my day – thank you! Love to all – wishing everybody a joyous holiday season!

  9. Thank you Evan, I am so very grateful for today`s SpiritView; its very helpful and needed!

Sometimes when talking with non-christian scientists I feel guilty that I did not correct their mortal opinions at once.
But I think we can still correct the mortal opinion we heard also later on when we are at home again. I work on sticking to Truth while others give their mortal opinions.
So thankful for Christian Science and happy with it!

  10. Much love to Bonnie. “His arm encircles me, and mine, and all.” Loved last weeks lesson with so many references to man’s infinite, eternal being, coexistent and coeternal with God. No separation there! <3 <3

And thanks Evan for the needed reminder!
