Shake it off

January 21, 2026 | 19 comments

If fear wants to take over and captivate your attention, there’s something you can do to stop it.  Rather than entertaining its drama and letting it take over, shake it off. Focus on God’s power and presence instead.

I explain how in this vlog that was filmed on the shore of Avalanche Lake, in Glacier National Park, in Montana when Kathy and I visited the area in August 2025.

  1. Very helpful! PS we were in Glassier Park in August 2025 also! Beautiful place! I appreciate your videos too!

  2. Thank you, Evan.

I have gained success with stating, “Oh I know what you are, you are just a suggestion.” when things pop up angling for attention. I rush to greet it and mow it down. No room at the inn for such silliness.

    1. Thanks John B, I loved, “ I rush to greet it and mow it down.” Mow down the lie with Truth. Instead of running from it fearfully, rush toward it and destroy it with the power and dominion of spiritual Being, Yesss.

  3. Thank you, Evan. So muvh error trying to take hold right now, I will continue to “Shake it off!”. So grateful for Christian Science!

  4. Thank you, Evan. I will endeavor to shake off the mortal thoughts that are intruding and thank you John B – send the suggestion right back to it’s nothingness, I like this.

  5. Thank you, Evan, and everyone with such good comments. I need to get better and quicker at Shaking Off the viper.
    This idea reminds me—
You must control evil thoughts in the first instance, or they will control you in the second.
    234:26

  6. Training thoughts to shaking off a viper, NOT allowing those evil thoughts to control you,
leads to peace and Love; where there is no danger, which can be shared, to calm thought. What a lesson we learn, as we practice, practice, practice.

  7. Thank you, Evan, for the helpful message, and the beautiful scenery
It means springing into action immediately, before the lie
gets a hold on our thoughts. It’s a bit like dropping a very hot potato in order
not to be burned, and it should be as natural as that to shake off
the sneaky serpent before it has a chance to fool us.

  8. This is just what I needed Evan, as mortal mind has been trying to take hold
of my thinking and your wonderful message in such a beautiful setting is
perfect in our reflection to God, just as the mirror image is expressed in the
lake above. It is interesting that you used Paul’s experience with the viper.
Paul (formerly known as Saul) had awakened to seeing his way out of matter-
based thinking and the viper (perhaps as seen as the serpent in the garden
of good and evil) tried to tempt him again, but he shook it off. It is not easy,
because sometimes we are tempted in so many ways, to believe in a power
other than God/Love which seems to take over our entire life and being, but
True Love conquers all and we just can’t let inharmony and materialism
overcome our calm sense – with fear, in captivating our attention as you
    mentioned above.

  9. Today as I read the familiar quote from Science & Heath at the end of your video, the word ‘thought’ jumped out at me. Do not wait til our thought has been sufficiently influenced by the ‘viper’ that it manifests itself on the body. Shake off the viper thought immediately, when it first tries to grab us.

  10. I was walking the neighbor’s dog, and we came to a spot that others said was a place where poisonous snakes are spotted regularly. I had never seen any there in all the years of walking. But this day the dog, although on a leash, was off the road, trotting in some grass, and I heard hissing under the dog. It seemed to be more than one making the sound and I immediately prayed, Father what shall I do? I was thinking maybe I needed to pull the dog back on the road with his leash. But the thought came very firmly, “JUST KEEP GOING”. He trotted out of the sounds and when he trotted back onto the road he was fine, everything was fine. I used those walks to pray continuously and it just seemed so natural to insist all was well. Afterwords I even thought, well the snakes didn’t have to be afraid either.
I have realized that there is a need to pray continuously, Then when an error threatens, just keep going—keep praying. Don’t stop and analyze the problem and its potential to harm. Grateful for the reminder to realize we are spiritual beings living a spiritual life and to shake off the intrusion of a power other than good.

    1. Thank you Kay for your beautiful testimony of God’s omnipresent Goodness and Love!

Thank you Evan for this very good example how to send off the error into it’s native nothingness. Sometimes it doesn’t seem easy, but we can always know that God is with us as he is a l l. and all good and the only omnipotence!
i also needed this SpiritView and pondered it and worked to apply it ! Thank you very much Evan for your refrshing Vlog, !

  11. Thank you Evan. What a stunningly beautiful location by the clear lake along with powerfully clear and helpful thoughts to “shake off” lies that have no power over God’s children.

And thanks Maggie for the idea to learn to naturally drop the mortal lie, “like dropping a very hot potato, in order not to be burned.”
