Sweep it away

January 29, 2026 | 21 comments

When I make a mess in the kitchen, I head to the utility closet, grab a broom, and sweep up whatever I’ve strewn all over the floor.  The floor is nice and clean afterward!

The same rule applies to keeping our thinking in a clean state.

If we indulge fear, worry, anger, resentment, ill-will, harsh condemnation, envy, or their kin, we might find ourselves with a “mess in our kitchen.”  The debris of mortal mind strewn about in our mental environment tends to detract from the good.  It needs to be cleaned up!

To stay clear on spiritual reality, we must not let the unrealities of mortal mind pollute consciousness.  We must not let the false evidence of material sense cover up our spiritual reality with God.

Mary Baker Eddy writes, “To divest thought of false trusts and material evidences in order that the spiritual facts of being may appear, — this is the great attainment by means of which we shall sweep away the false and give place to the true” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 428).

If you need to do some vigorous mental house cleaning today, proceed!  You’ll be glad you did.

Let spiritual truth sweep away the errors of material sense.  Let God’s beautiful happy and healthy creation appear!

  1. Thank you very much Evan for this analogy. As I live in a windy, dusty area sweeping my floor is a daily task. So now every time I will be executing this task I will make it a habit to check the thoughts I have and if they are not coming from God sweep them away as well. MBE instructs us we need to stand porter at the door of our thoughts constantly to keep that line of communication with God open. Listening to his voice, his whispers, noticing the signs he is giving. But as there is dust that keeps coming into the house in a way I do not notice, so are these unhealthy thoughts of the mortal mind sneaking in my head sometimes. When that happens I know it is time to pause whatever I am doing. Then it is time to reflect and pray, to become conscious of the one Mind that is all good. That Mind that sweeps away the unhealthy thoughts and let’s me shine again HIs reflection.

  2. Someone told me, we must clean out the cobwebs in our thoughts and is a privilege and sign that we are on the right track toward redemption.
    Thank you Evan for the reminder.

  3. “Sweep away the false to give place to the true”
    I love this, it’s like another “Stand porter at the door of thought” Thank you, Evan.

    1. Yes Joanna, that is the same line that caught my eye. It made me remember that the true was always present, and when we sweep away the false (which may have temporarily appeared to be true) we see that God, Truth, Love is, was and always will be there, the still small voice always speaking to us.

  4. Thank you Evan…and we have to notice that it’s up to us to go and get that broom!
    Whilst waiting for my husband to get ready for our dog walk this morning I sat watching a robin having his breakfast from a donut I had put on the bird table. It was sunny , dry a perfect January morning. ‘’How wonderful to be a robin!’’ I thought. Mostly because I am in the middle of so many material problems and worries at present. It seemed a good time to get quiet, get closer to God and seek some guidance which wasn’t ‘’me instigated ‘’ but God focused. Within seconds the words came to me ..Barbara, your solutions are here, with Me, …your move… because it’s already harmoniously resolved…That was a Wow moment for me and I hadn’t even read SV yet! It wasn’t the words but the complete feeling of trust that wowed me.
    New International Version Matt 7
    7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
    Looking forward to all the comments…❣️

    1. Thank you, Barbara. When I read your note about the robin and the inspiration that came with it I had a light bulb moment also. The problems I am dealing with are also already dealt with harmoniously by God. God does not see problems. God only sees the harmonious life that He/She has created for us. We are always safe in the arms of Love. We need to go forth knowing that only goodness is present, not problems. Thank you for sharing your goodness.

      1. Thank you very much Diane for your wonderfully clear and healing truths you are uttering. Already in former years when I struggelt with challenges I made clear to me that in God all problems are already solved.

        Thank you dear Evan for your important and healing advise to keep our mental household clean in order to let God’s. blessing thoughts into our thinking.
        I feel very blessed with this loving SpiritView family – Thank you all so very much !

  5. I was harboring harsh condemnation of someone in the news. Then I heard of something positive about them. As I pondered it, I realized that although what I disapproved of was true, it was minor compared to the positive. Then I remembered MBE’s admonition to followers about church officials. She said if they are doing a good job generally and overall, but make some missteps, they should be supported. My thought softened toward this person. I realized that we may judge rightly in one instance, but we don’t have the overall picture of the person and their actions and accomplishments. Also, God knows what is in a person’s heart. I realized I needed to vigorously accept that God is in control and will adjust anything that needs to be adjusted so people can grow in spirit, harmony will unfold, and justice will become apparent. Progress is a law of God, and we do not have the overview of how it is moving forward and it can appear muddy. But we can vigorously support it without having to outline it. It is liberating to be free of this judgmental attitude.

    1. Thank you, Kay. I needed to read this. I love the reminder that we do not see the whole person or picture. It’s something that I know but wasn’t practicing today. Thanks for the “thought check”!

  6. I love this cleansing of thought message today. So lovely and refreshing.
    I randomly opened the CS Hymnal just now and there on page 118,
    God-inspired words I thought fit perfectly with this topic:

    “Holy Spirit, Light divine, Shine up on this heart of mine;
    Kindle every high desire; Cleanse my thought in Thy pure fire.
    Holy Spirit, Peace divine, Still this restless heart of mine;
    Speak to calm the tossing sea, Stayed in Thy tranquility.
    Holy Spirit, all divine, Dwell within this heart of mind;
    Bid my troubled thoughts be still; With Thy peace my spirit fill.”

    The dust of mortal sense is swept away and replaced with divine
    peace which is ever-lasting and brightens our pathway into Truth’s
    clear day.

    1. P.s. I enjoy reading anything that Kathy Fitzer writes, and she contributes to the Cedars Camp Metaphysical articles on the weekly Bible lesson. At the header at the top of the website under Inspiration, commentary by Kathy can be found under the drop-down for authors, if you are interested:

  7. Thank you, Evan. Your message today lifted my prayer to sweep away the mortal mind picture of a situation and let it go and replace it with the divine. Just like we wouldn’t keep the mess we swept up to look at it and examine later, we throw it out because it has no value. So too, we can let go of what we see as the problem and replace it with what God is always knowing . Thank you again. That’s just what i needed to hear today.

    1. Love this L, “we wouldn’t keep the mess we swept up to look at it and examine it later.” Mortal Mind loves to do that. Toss it out!

    2. That is a great thought, L , and I love it, too … about not keeping or
      examining the mess we have swept up, because it has no value.
      Brilliant! In getting rid of it, we sweep it from our thinking and
      instead, replace it with floodtides of Love. These comments that
      elaborate on Evan’s original thought, are so very helpful, as is,
      of course, the original thought. Much gratitude to you All!

  8. Thank you for sharing this activity.
    It reminds me of when my daughter and I were at a Christian Science camp and I was asked to form a drama for the campers. And this was the same concept I shared with a broom and dust pan on stage sweeping away the negative mortal mind thoughts and starting new with spiritual thought.
    TODAY, I needed to read this and revisit the experience so that I can apply it to mortal thoughts I am having about a neighbor who shared her political views and activities . Mortal thoughts of judgement and envy at seeming political power and division. Thank you for posting the quote from Mary Baker Eddy. It has brought to clarity the necessity for doing so and the good result.

  9. Thank you, Barbara. When I read your note about the robin and the inspiration that came with it I had a light bulb moment also.
