Take responsibility for your experience

October 15, 2021 | 32 comments

Spiritual healing happens much quicker when we take responsibility for our experience.

For instance, if we blame others for our suffering, we’ve put our well being into their hands, and the outcome may not be good. We’ve lost control of our experience, in belief, and may feel helpless and hopeless as a result.

The better way is to remember that everything we need to prosper comes directly from God, and that there isn’t anything anyone else can do or say to deprive us of God’s good.

Jesus Christ illustrated how this works when severely persecuted, and from his position of being nailed to the cross, said with pure love in his heart to his persecutors, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34, NLT). He knew his Life was Love, and that his persecutors had never touched his substance in Love. He was safe, and he knew it! He retained complete control of his thinking, and thus his experience, which empowered him to walk out of the tomb alive three days later. He took full responsibility for his thinking, which in turn, prevented his enemies from taking control of his thinking. This act of intelligence empowered him to triumph over his detractors with everlasting glory.

As we take full responsibility for our thinking, we sooner triumph over evil too.

Evil cannot control our thinking. Anger cannot manipulate our point of view, discouragement cannot dictate our outlook, and disease cannot take our health away. All our good is spiritual, out of the reach of evil. The sooner we stay clear in thought with spiritual reality, the sooner we discern the truth that heals and proves evil powerless to touch us.

Take responsibility for your experience, side with Science to have a good experience, and prove evil powerless to stop you from advancing with grand results.

  1. Excellent !
    Thank you Evan.
This is very applicable to me.
I’ve been on my healing journey for 4 years now. This time has also been a time of learning about Christian Science. Along the way I spent time blaming others for the stress I was under which I felt caused my ‍♀️.
I won’t give it the name the medical authorities call it since I chose to go the route of Science.
I was new to my understanding and with the grace of God guiding me, I had the courage to trust God and the unfolding of this guidance. I came to realize along the way, that there’s a lot more to understand than my physical healing and becoming more ABLE.
I am blessed with Spirit View and the wonderful sharing that seems to spur me along.
I have deep gratitude for all of you here.
I truly hope you know what a blessing you are Evan.

    1. Susan, you are blessed on your healing journey. It sounds like you are wonderfully yielding to Truth. All love to you as you continue to uncover your present perfection.

Evan thanks for the reminder that when we blame others for any perceived loss we give them power over our experience. Not long ago I became very angry and resentful over changes my employer made to my work schedule and my seeming loss of the former control I had over my hours and availability. After a while I saw the folly in this resentment because I remembered God alone is in charge of my schedule and He places me where I need to be at all times, and I can trust that it will be harmonious and contain no loss. I gained much peace about the situation and now things seem to have resolved.

      1. Thank you dear Rose.
It’s not the first time a comment from you has brought me pure joy. I hope you can feel my love and appreciation❣️

  2. Such a good post to share today – thank you Evan . So helpful in applying this idea ( truth ) for guidance in making right decisions
( activity is not dependent on other minds ) as there IS only the one MIND .- who sees only His perfect plan unfolding for all and blessing
all . That insidious claim that others may be “ responsible “ for our well being is met in the chapter on animal magnetism in S & H where Eddy refers to “ the personification of evil is the god of this world “

  3. Thanks Evan. Very appropriate for a day in which one is pulled in so many directions of thinking. Keep focussed!

  4. Thanks Evan – today’s topic is so vital to understand. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of blaming others. My mother told me when I was three I walked into the room after having wet my pants and said “Look what you made me do.”
Today, thanks to Mrs Eddy’s teaching I can see all good comes from God and evil is neither person., place, or situation. It is a lie. And I can refuse to believe it..
Personal sense deceives and spiritual sense informs.

  5. Jesus’ three days’ work in the sepulchre set the seal of eternity on time, He proved life to be deathless, and
love to be the master of hate. My 214-11

Jesus did not take any false concept with him. No cross, no nails, no anger or disappointment with
    others.
    He took Love.

    Three days!
Sometimes we have allowed, days, weeks,
months, maybe years to entomb our thoughts.
    Three days!

It takes Love! It could be instant
recognition. No cross thinking or nails.

    1. After reading the comments by M I think of Nelson Mandela unjustly imprisoned in South Africa . He survived in part by recalling the words of a poem which said he “was the captain of his ship”..

      1. This is such a good example of what evan is talking about John that I am sharing that poem Invictus which means unconquerable or undefeatable. Thanks for the reinder.

        Invictus
        William Ernest Henley – 1849-1903

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
        For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
        Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

    2. M, yes it’s good to recognize that sometimes we allow our thoughts to be entombed. I looked up this word and it means to be buried or trapped in or under something. That’s what it can feel like if we look to the error-filled, mortal viewpoint and take it to be real.

I love this quote from the well-known article God’s Law of Adjustment by Adam H. Dickey,
“Error, which has no place in divine Mind, claims to exist in human thought. When we have put it out of human thought, we have driven it out of the only place where it ever pretended to have a foothold, and thereafter to us it becomes nothing.”

      1. Thank you Rose for posting the quote by Adam H. Dickey. Such a clear directive and so helpful and comforting. Sometimes I get stuck in the “putting it out of human thought” part, especially if I’m dealing with fear. Yesterday a humorous thought came to me that God never has a Plus-One. (Plus-One refers to an added guest on an invitation.). In God’s All-in-Allness and Oneness – it’s just Him/Her. There is no “guest” like fear, sickness, anxiety, worry, etc. that can have a foothold in thought because nothing can be added to All.

  6. Thanks so much for this timely reminder, Evan! It seems that these days it’s not only a temptation, but we’re often encouraged, to blame others for our problems. As long as we assign a “cause” to some error in our experience, we’ll never be rid of it. God is ALL and therefore the ONLY cause (past, present & future). And God causes only good!

  7. If we blame anything for any bad experience, we are “unwittingly aligning ourselves on errors side.” “Evil is always unreal.” “…Therefore, the only place to master error is in consciousness, in our thinking, not in our neighbors. Regardless of what discord may seem to be confronting us, we must see it’s unreality in our thought. It has no more reality than we give it.”

These quotes are from the article “Treat Yourself Daily” by William Curtis Coffman.

I got up this morning with some slight symptoms to an annoying challenge I seem to have off and on for a long time. Recently through progress in spiritual understanding, I have been able to stand up to this lie more powerfully than ever before and it is becoming less real to me in thought and therefore in bodily results. So this morning, I treated my thought immediately as the false symptoms attempted their stagnant old lies. I can see clearly what’s really going on. And that is the powerful shift that needs to take place. There’s nothing inharmonious going on in the body, because I am spiritual, eternal, perfect and harmonious right now. Just like we all are.

    1. Thank you for the link to the article, Trista! It’s excellent! Good reminder not to overlook “the basics” in our daily work.

    2. Trista, I loved, “as the false symptoms attempted their stagnant old lies.” So true, error tries to use its same old worn out bag of tricks and hopes we will take the bait. So good to hear that you are standing up for the Truth of your being.

  8. Susan,- On page 354 of Miscellaneous Writings, Mary Baker Eddy says, “A little more grace, a motive made pure, a few truths tenderly told, a heart softened, a character subdued, a life consecrated, would restore the right action of the mental mechanism, and make manifest the movement of body and soul in accord with God” Your deep desire for greater spiritual understanding, and the loving gratitude you are expressing, shows that healing is going on.

John,- I love your statement “Personal sense deceives and spiritual sense informs”.

    1. Thank you dear Linda.
I find myself crying and deeply moved with what you share.

Having recently read Miscellaneous Writing, what you shared from it is having a bigger impact in this moment. Interesting how that unfolds.

Please feel my love and gratitude ❣️

  9. This brought to my thought something a practitioner told me, “Don’t give error legs.”
Thank you Evan and to all for the helpful comments.

  10. LINDA, I join in thanking you as well for what you found in Miscellaneous Writings for Susan J. So perfect in what Mrs. Eddy wrote. I’m so very grateful! So very, very needed here. Please forgive my misspelled words and the partial quote of Mrs Eddy’s in the textbook! My textbook isn’t right at hand today.
My strivings are mortal thoughts seem confused and of being apart from other Christian Scientists…..and there you all are!
In deep gratitude to Evan and all beautiful comments!

  11. The resolution for any human suffering is more more, more Love and spiritual understanding. I am so grateful for Evan’s Spirit View blog with its continual ‘prodding’ to apply our teaching of living as the loved of Love. There is some beautiful heartfelt content today …a joy to read . Thank you. Happy weekend all❣️

  12. I don’t blame others, but when healing doesn’t come, I feel it is my fault- my responsibility. And that can be depressing.

    1. Dear D.P. This is animal magnetism…human false influence….tugging you backwards. Now you must press forward in your thought. Maybe forget about the human result you want and pray more diligently for the truth of your being. Nothing can separate you from the presence and power of God..ever. MBE says to stand Porter at the door of thought … Recently Evan posted a beautiful vlog on how perfect we all are right now. .take another look ..…much love and progress to you…x

  13. Meanwhile I read Evan’s SpiritView up here several times. Thanks dear Evan, it is so needed as all others you gave us as daily divine healing present. Thank you for your love with which you give us sll these helpful metaphysical thoughts!
I just read the hymn 14 “raise raise up and shine…”. Wow that is a comforting hymn with such a nice melody. It just brought healing light into my consciousness. As it is night here I can rest in peace and love.
Oh, I noticed that this time we got two links to diverse wonderful articles . Thanks dear SpiritView friends!
Regarding this toppic “take responsibility for your experiences” I remember that Christ Jesus did heal all who came to him and then he said “go and sin no more” to the sinning woman, or “go and do the same (heal)”; or he said “If you love me keep my commandnents”. .
Your SpiritView is such an enlightening start into the day, thanks a lot for it, dear Evan!♡
