The not so heavy couch

If you can see how to do accomplish a feat, you can accomplish it, I often remind myself. And also its counterpoint truth, if you can’t see how to do a job, and believe there is no way to do the job, then you won’t get the job done. Nothing happens.

Here’s a case in point…

A few weeks ago, we bought a new couch to replace an old one that had served its purpose. When the new sofa was delivered, I shoved the old one to the back of the living room, figuring I’d deal with it later.

My wife came home and asked if we could move it to the garage. Not enthused to take on a big moving project, I half-heartedly lifted one end of the sofa to see how heavy it was, and dropped it with a big groan. “Oh, this is way too heavy for us to move all the way to the garage.” I declared. “We’ll leave it here until someone comes to get it.” And so there it sat.

And sat and sat…

Four weeks passed.

We found no takers for our sofa.

After a month of waiting, I was getting tired of seeing it in the living room crowded behind the new one, so I decided out loud in a bit of impatience, “This couch HAS to go!”

In a burst of energy, I picked up the same end of the couch I did a month earlier, and it felt really light.

“Oh, this is easy to move,” I told Kathy. “We can move this out to the garage with no problem.”

As I tipped it sideways and tried to figure a way to get it through the front door, Kathy asked if I could remove the backs. I checked.

“Yes!” They were on sliders. And with a few clicks, off they came.

Now the couch was really easy and manageable to move.

A few minutes later it was out in the garage. I couldn’t believe how easy it was to move that couch when I had spent a month believing it was impossible for us to move.

I learned a valuable spiritual lesson.

Just because we think something is impossible to do, doesn’t mean it’s impossible to do. It could be that our perspective needs to change.

As long as I believed the sofa was too heavy to move, it sat there unmoved. Nothing happened. But once I saw a moral demand that needed to be met—get the living room cleaned out—I wasn’t thinking about a heavy couch anymore. I was thinking about how to meet a moral demand. My thinking went higher, above matter, above the couch, into Mind, where all things are possible with the right inspiration. And that’s when I saw a solution.

The problem never was a heavy couch. The problem was my belief that the couch was too heavy. Once my belief was gone, the couch was moved easily.

Do you have a “heavy couch” sitting in your life somewhere right now that needs to be moved out, but you’ve come up with countless reasons why it can’t be moved? Seek out a higher perspective.

As I learned, the problem is not the job you fear. It’s your belief that there is something to fear. Once your belief disappears, the problem disappears too.

“With God, all things are possible.”

You don’t have to put up with those “heavy couches” in your life anymore. Move them on out!

  1. Oh wow! This could not be more perfect timing for me.

I have a very heavy couch which is scheduled to be picked up today as a donation. It has dual recliners, and no removable parts, so it’s very heavy, and I did need someone else to take it out.

But then, I’ve asked a friend to help move the couch I bought from my neighbor up to my apartment. I’ve been thinking about how hard it will be to do that, as the couch is on legs rather than flat on the floor, so we won’t be able to just set it on a dolly. I was wondering how we were going to be able to manage it.

Now I know! It’s not up to me to figure it out. It’s a right idea, and the need will be met! Someone will enjoy my old couch, and however it works out, God will provide me with the way to get my new one up to my apartment.

And, I’m very grateful for the elevator!

  2. That case you showed us, I think we all had such moments – for my part I had to laugh because I had those moments several times; but solved that problem anyhow.
But, Evan, thank you for the spiritual lesson you showed us, how to solve the matter spiritually in the way to change our perspective from matter to Spirit – thanks a lot!

  3. Great spiritual lessons from everyday life! May I also add that Kathy has to be one of the most patient people in North America to put up with that old couch in your living room for FOUR weeks! And when you say you saw a solution….well, it seems Kathy saw the solution of taking off the back which allowed the whole process to proceed! SO, Mind spoke patience, inspiration, and ingenuity to both of you! Loved this!

  4. A similar incident happened with me too just last week. I wanted to complete a task at home which appeared very cumbersome. For weeks it had been unattended. But as Evan puts it so beautifully, that when we move from matter to Mind, with right inspiration, everything is possible. I said to myself, “Well God will certainly help me to complete this task which seems cumbersome, with joy and ease.” And it so happened. I completed the work which seemed so difficult and cumbersome, effortlessly and promptly.
Evan’s inspiration of today surely is so helpful. The only thing we need to do is to remove the belief of fear and know that “With God all things are possible”.
Thank you so very much Evan.

  5. I think it’s a great way to get all those seemingly cumbersome jobs done that one tends to procrastinate about. I keep thinking I need to wait for someone to help and now I have a different perspective that help is Always at hand because God is there for any problems no matter what or when; large or small.

  6. How good is this! OMG. And it applies to soooo many situations! This is a keeper to be reminded of when things seem to get “rough”!

Thank you so much for sharing.

  7. This is so timely. I have recently installed the latest version of Windows on my computer, was not pleased with the type of print and colors, and so got to the place where it could be changed. But I chose poorly and now the computer is VERY difficult to read. But, looking at your couch situation, I see that I am blocking the correction to the situation with my own thinking. This, too, shall be “moved out of my life” and Principle rules in my thinking.

  8. I loved your couch story. We can all relate to it. I have a task before me now which has been with me for sometime. I frankly have all but given up! But i can now consider consulting Divine Mind for solutions and let God designate and lead the way!

  9. this is a great story illustrating the change is needed in consciousness. there is a story I heard a long time ago about 3 piano movers having to move a piano out of an apartment with pulleys, hoisting the piano through a window to the ground below. Two of the men groaned and struggled and said the job was impossible. The third man was much older than the other two and did not look strong at all. But his thoughts were different than the other two men. He saw quickly and effortlessly what was needed , perhaps removing a leg or two, and in minutes ,without strain, the piano was ready to be lowered to the street. I never forgot that story.
When something seems difficult or impossible, it just needs the right Mind to be allowed to be heard.

  10. Thanks so much for this, Evan! Such a simple, mundane every day problem, handled through a shift in perspective – a change in thought! My question is…..can this simple method be used for healing a physical problem that’s been around since early childhood? Can it really be that Simple? What is it that seems to keep physical healing from happening easily and simply and quickly…..?? Is it just our thought about it……our heavy unyielding thought? I get into blaming and shaming myself…..that it must be my thought that is keeping the healing from happening. So there seems to be more of a psychological problem of self-esteem that might be connected. How would you deal metaphysically with something like this? Thanks and God Bless!

  11. Loved your story. Great humor and humility! It’s all about thought and going higher away from the ” heavy couch” belief.

  12. Hi, I’m back! The guys took my old couch out, but the person who was supposed to help bring the new one up to my apartment is not available now. He may be later, but I was hoping to go to church tonight. I know God has the solution, so I’m not getting upset, just listening for guidance and taking things one step at a time!

    1. To follow up, Mom called yesterday morning and said she’d help pay for movers to move the couch. I gratefully accepted. Moving it ended up costing more than twice what I paid for the couch (which was very little), but it enabled me to get it done; then my friend helped me get things in my apartment cleaned back up, including helping put back my curio cabinet with my rock collection! The guy who couldn’t help before did come up and help get the couch upright after I’d put the legs back on, too – and we couldn’t have gotten it up here ourselves anyway, because it wouldn’t fit on the elevator.

I am so grateful for all the help I received!

  13. Thanks, and great timing for me, too. Yes, I have some heavy couches, including a literal one in my garage looking for a taker! When I felt the literal one really needed to go, a way appeared to get it out of a very small room. All the couches, literal and metaphorical, can go!

  14. “I will listen for Thy voice.” This is what I’m relying on as I’m assisting my daughter in clearing out a house she bought from foreclosure, as she lives over 100 miles away. The back of the house has sliding glass doors onto a deck and only three wide steps down. So rather than carrying bags of trash down 6 front steps, I’ve placed a discarded cabinet door on the 3 steps and just roll everything down and use a little red wagon to haul out to the dumpster in front of the house. No repeated climbing up and down steps carrying bags. So simple, yet divinely inspired. This is just one small example of listening before tackling a task. God’s angel messages are always present, our task is to listen!

Thanks so much Evan and for everyone who has commented. These daily Lifts are certainly that quite literally – very uplifting!

  15. Great message Evan – God is here to help us with every facet of our earthly lives. Thank you Grace and Nergish for your comments. A big help today.
