Here’s a short video clip that caught my attention.
It’s of Mr. Rogers sharing a thought-provoking idea on the gift of silence, and why we need it.
oh! I remember Mr Rogers with great affection when my daughter was little.Thank you Evan. His sincerity shone through every one of his broadcasts. When silent we hear the still small voice of God.
Mr. Rogers was a true gem. I also remember watching with my daughter when she was a child. I got a lot out of listening to him, even though it was made for children, to reach their hearts and help them feel good and realize that they had value and worth just the way they were.
Silence is quite powerful, Mr. Rogers is so right about the noisy world that makes it challenging to get quiet inside and listen to God, Truth. Ekhart Tolle was once asked what he thought the world would be like when everyone finally woke up to the truth of spiritual reality. He said he did not know, but was only sure that it would be much quieter.
I found a longer clip of the Charlie Rose/Mr. Rogers interview that Evan posted,

Thank you so much for this extended version of the enlightened original that
Evan shared, Rose. It was beautiful to see how this wonderful man brought
such vision and calm and valuable lessons to children and adults, alike. These
thoughts are so needed in today’s world.
I’m thankful to you, dear Rose for the fuller Interview which is very intetesting and helpful! ❤️
” after silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is MUSIC ” Aldus Huxley
yes thank you, Andrew, that’s right! Last early morning when I awoke, I listened to several organ music, partly with hymns from our CS hymnal book. It was uplifting and calming, and later I had a few hours to sleep until I got up. Music does very good and good music is divine as Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health.
Thank you Evan for this healing SpiritView!♡
I value silence. How right he is, several times in a day I have a quiet time. That’s a discipline I’ve develop and will not deviate from it.
It’s precious and powerful,
Thank you for the clip and for all your wonderful posts.
Oh gosh, and we didn’t even have the internet then, did we? I wonder what he’d think now?!
Hymn 94 and 491 (both have dirgy melodies, but great words.)
“It was the voice of God that spake
In silence to your silent heart,
And bade each higher thought awake,
And every dream of earth depart.
And as MBE states
“In order to pray aright, we must enter into the closet and shut the door. We must close the lips and silence the material senses. In the quiet sanctuary of earnest longings, we must deny sin and plead God’s allness.”
Good old Mr Rogers… I have heard of him, but he wasn’t “a thing” in Australia, but I wish he had been, because he seems like a lovely, gentle man who was tuned into the right ideas.
And when mortal mind is silenced in me by seeing the reality of Gods stillness… the world is quite and Christ Vision seen.
silence Is Golden
“in the sound of silence”
I’ve never heard of Mr Rogers….but he’s certainly not wrong!
Important topic Evan…thank you for your continued inspiration and encouragement every day.
James 1:19: “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry”.
So important to find time to be quiet with our Father/Mother…..just allowing Gods thoughts to lead❣️
Thank you, Evan-
I was privileged to hear Mr. Rogers speak at a convention I once attended. He reminded all of us how much we were loved, needed and valued and expounded on that for the next 60 minutes or so. After he was finished, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Even the muscular gents in the back were in tears. Divine Love permeated that space, saturating us all with the knowledge of our untouched purity and true selfhood as children of God. It was amazing and something I will never forget. He was a true disciple of Christ and that Christlike touch was palpable in the room that day.
It later reminded me of what Mrs. Eddy said in her article on “Angels,” “When angels visit us, we do not hear the rustle of wings, nor feel the feathery touch of the breast of a dove; but we know their presence by the love they create in our hearts. Oh, may you feel this touch, — it is not the clasping of hands, nor a loved person present; it is more than this: it is a spiritual idea that lights your path!”
(Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 306:23–28)
Beautiful Malissa. Thank you. ❣️
Expressing the gift of SILENCE means I have/am …
Serenity | Illumination | Listening | Exploration | Newness | Consecration | Eagerness
Love it Mark!❣️

Quote from Mr Rogers: “I don’t think we give that gift anymore (the gift of silence). I’m very concerned that our society is much more interested in information than wonder. In noise, rather than silence…how do we encourage reflection? Oh my, this is a noisy world. I get up every morning at least by 5AM. I have a couple hours of quiet time, reflect about what it is important. What can we do, to encourage people to have more quiet in their lives, more silence? Real revelation comes through silence.”
In addition to his prayers at home, he would swim every morning, and as he swam laps, he would be praying for people and the world.
I think of prayer as listening to an opening my mind and heart to what God is saying and doing and being and causing me to be. Mr. Rogers also said: “Listening is where love begins: listening to ourselves and then to our neighbors.”
. “How many times have you noticed that it’s the little quiet moments in the midst of life that seem to give the rest extra-special meaning?”
“Everyone longs to be loved. And the greatest thing we can do is to let people know that they are loved and capable of loving.”
This calming, lovely message of the importance of the gift of silence is so
refreshing in the din of a world with so much clamoring noise. Mr. Roger’s
wonderful neighborhood was such a valuable, peaceful place and this clip
brought back memories of watching him as a child when visiting an aunt ….
(could not get him on the few channels where I lived). The presence of
serenity is so cherished when we are surrounded by nature and God’s beautiful
world and brings us closer to this harmony which is in silence if we are still
and quiet enough to listen. In a world of instant this and instant that – these
very special words of wisdom are so reflective of just slowing down and
endearing the simple, the thought-provoking gift of silence.
You are our Mr. Roger’s❤️
I had the pleasure of being instructed by one of Mr. Roger’s producers in
a college class one time. The gentleness and caring that he embodied in his
shows were a great lesson in humility and a comforting guide in many children’s
lives.
I’m currently having the roof on my house replaced and last week I had the siding replaced. Talk about appreciating silence! When the workers leave in the evening, my wife and I just sit quietly and revel in the silence! Definitely something we have taken for granted in the past, but not anymore!
Sometimes I search for articles on JSHOnline related to the SpiritView topic of the day and today I found one that I thought I’d share with everyone. Link is below.

Silence allows the still small voice to speak in our hearts to hear God speak. Thank you, Evan, for that wonderful clip of Mr. Rodgers.
Thank you for sharing this. I love the gift of “silence, reflection, and wonder.”
I’ve noticed over the years that when we are on a long road trip or just a long drive so often we don’t even turn the radio on for hours on end and we have serious radio where we could listen to it anytime I guess it’s just a relaxing feeling that we enjoy thanks for all the comments.
I too didn’t know who Mr Roberts was but he sounds very special with very CS ideas. I wonder if anyone ever gave him a Science & Health.
My apologies – I meant Mr Rogers!
It’s possible Linda, a lot of the things he expresses do remind me of CS, filled with Love, calmness and faith. I’ve read that he had a Divinity degree, studied child development and worked as a Presbyterian minister before creating his wonderful TV show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood which ran for 33 years on public television (PBS).
My sophisticated, cynical, traumatized, bitter adult son, seeing so much evil in the world, surrounded by friends who are also trying to fight this evil, commented to me that one of his friends had been at a motel, where there was a convention, and as the young man walked out of the elevator when there trying to enter the elevator was Mr. Roger’s, who said you look like you need a friend, let’s talk. And the young man had said something like yeah, but you’re really busy and he says yes I am busy. I do have a lot to do but right now you’re the most important thing in my life. And so they sat down and talked a while, and Mr. Rogers was very respectful and humble, curious and empathetic , and compassionate and wise. Being quiet instead of jumping in and pushing his beliefs onto the young man. It had been very comforting and healing, and then he told my son that he was the real deal. He was authentic and true. Latermy son agreed to go with me to a documentary about Fred Rogers.
When he was young, I was running a small private school therapy program and so did not watch TV. And then we became homeless in order to protect my children from their abusive father. And when we finally got housing, my son asked me to buy a television which I did at the thrift shop, which had beautiful reception black-and-white of the Oregon public broadcasting. It never crossed my mind to see if any other channel could be picked up. There was no commercial TV that could be picked up by that TV and so he could have Mr. Rogers TV show that was gentle and comforting of a good man in a good neighborhood and not be distracted by other scary or exploitive shows.
Years later, a fellow Christian scientist told me that when she was at the local grocery store, she saw Mr. Rogers, and he was talking with people the same exact way he does on the TV show, with humble compassion and silent, empathetic, listening, gentle, wisdom, and grace that is based in a profound spirituality that honors the individuality of each child of God. He was visiting a friend who said that’s how he really is in real life. I want people to be able to say that about me..
Thank you, Evan, for this post. I couldn’t agree more that silent time is essential. I think of Jesus going away for periods of time to be alone, quiet, to listen and pray, to be refreshed. I recently was hiking in remote regions with no cell coverage for weeks at a time and appreciated being unplugged and the opportunity to think and pray. Of course we can and need to do this at home too, our prayer throughout the day to hear God’s message.
According to his Wikipedia page, Mr. Rodgers in 1963 became a Presbyterian minister. In 1962 he graduated from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary with a bachelor’s degree in divinity.
