Watching the unseen consciousness

January 26, 2017 | 16 comments

“…keep your thoughts right in God’s sight. It is one of my greatest struggles to guard the unseen consciousness so that the visible shall always bless myself and others.”

In a letter to Augusta Stetson from Mary Baker Eddy, 1905.

The phrase “unseen consciousness,” caught my attention, which could refer to latent fears, low lying grudges, subtle resentments, or any other kind of evil impression we hold, but don’t’ recognize.

These error-states are not really “unseen” at all, so much as ignored or overlooked.

If we pay close attention to the impressions, attitudes, and thoughts we harbor, we will notice them and be aware to master them when necessary.

It’s a daily effort to put on the Mind of Christ to let truth and love dominate thought. But it’s worth the effort and the reward!

  1. Thanks as always, Evan.

It’s been helpful to me to be able to identify the unseen negativity, not as “mine,” but as Job described Satan, “From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it”
    (Job 1:7), like random chatter.

A somewhat related view of this negative mindset, and the necessity of dealing with it, is in an article which appeared in the January Christian Science Journal called “No ‘Subconscious’ Mind to Sabotage Us” by Angela Sage Larsen.

It is available at Christian Science Reading Rooms, and online at jsh.christianscience.com or jsh-online

  2. Hello Evan, I often think of your lecture where you say …”evil is a lie” , at least call it a lie even if
it looks very real to you. (see videos on Spiritview home page) When I do that, I can find the true spiritual fact to counter the lie and move on with peace, being a witness to “God’s disposal of events.” (MBE) Thank you ~

  3. Thank you Evan! Bonnie thank you for sharing, I will definitely read. So important to be aware of suggestions that would lead us astray from the one Mind. Of course we can not be separated from God, Divine Mind but we have to be alert to those thoughts that would suggest otherwise and destroy them before they grow upon thought. Joy to all, BEE

  4. “Beloved Christian Scientists, keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love……….” MBE. The Biggest Challenge…..to be in the world, but not of it. Jesus did it!!

  5. While I wash and shave in the morning I am getting rid of any beliefs of error in my thought; when I dress, I am putting on the garments of Truth and Love. Then I check my thoughts about every hour throughout the day to make sure of my oneness with the perfect cause — perfect God and perfect Man.

  6. Thank you Evan, that we can tthink about todays theme.
the best explanation I have ever heard was “There is no unseen consciousness, because GOD is the one and only conciousness”. As one could be anxious in the face of thoughts, of which we might not know. For me the tought that God is the only consciousness is very comforting.
Am also looking forward reading the article in the January Journal!

  7. Thank you, Evan, for this timely blog! Yesterday I saw a huge flaw in my thinking when a friend came to thought. This individual is a fine thinker but often says or does very questionable things and I’ve backed off a bit from the relationship. That bothered me. Then I realized very clearly I needed to see all the good in their character and know the error had no place there. After all, I can’t react to what isn’t truly there. The repulsion I had felt from this individual literally evaporated and joy just flooded my thought. Your blog and the comments totally sealed the deal for me! Thank you! There is no subconscious mind, or fear, or reaction!
“All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation.” Reaction to something is a more obvious error replacing an already erroneous suggestion!

  8. We both want to thank you, Evan, for the wake-up to watch for those “unseen” suggestions in our thought. Sometimes they are so subtle, but they are unreal and powerless in reality.

  9. I, too, want to thank you, Evan, for the wake-up to watch for those “unseen” suggestions in our thought. Currently reading that Journal.
