Struggling with excess weight? Wondering how to lose it permanently?
I was intrigued by this short video clip on the Today show where Gwen Shamblin was interviewed about her “Weigh down” method of losing weight.
I’m not advocating her system, but I found several of her ideas thought-provoking. Most notably her conviction that focusing on food selection makes the whole problem of permanently losing weight worse. She claims that the need is to stop focusing on food, and focus on loving God more. By loving God more, and feeling God’s love, the dietary issues will moderate, and the body will return to its normal state, she argues.
She has strong testimony to back up her claims.
Evan:
Your comments in your blog around the spiritual thinking about weight are worth revisiting as they clear the air.
I find myself reviewing your many articles and always find comfort and the regeneration of God’s love for each of us.
Thanks
I have read her book and she does have some good points. She debunks common diet theories. I found the Weigh Down diet generally 3 steps: 1) eat when you are hungry 2) stop eating when you are full and 3) obey the 1st commandment. – love God not food. Gwen does use many quotes from the Bible and she does emphasize building your relationship with God.
When I followed the Weigh Down diet, my weight changed, there was a lot less emphasis on food, and I ate more normally. However, it only lasted about 6 weeks.
Now is the Weigh Down diet compatible with Christian Science? No, it is matter based, and there is too much emphasis on the body. Specifically: look to the body to see if it, the body, is hungry. But I found the Weigh Down diet a temporary mean, as it made me question what I was thinking about food, eating, etc. However, it is definitely not a Christianly scientific solution, even if God is a part of it, because you cannot mix God and a matter body. Well, at least I cannot.
As Bill said, I would rather read your blogs; they too have testimony!
To above,
Aw, thanks for sharing your experience with the “Weigh down,” diet. I have no experience with it, and have not read her book. But I do appreciate glimpses of truth wherever I find them.
last spring i desired to tackle a sense of over weight once and for all- spiritually. i remembered a sentinel about 5 years ago on weight loss and in it gwen shamblin was interviewed and her book reviewed. that thought kept coming to mind so i bought and read it. i also have taken her on-line class, which is basically a bible study focused on man’s relationship to god and not food. yes, she does share a few human steps, but primarily and fundamentally it is getting your heart right with god. “whatever inspires with wisdom, truth, or love-. . ” this isn’t about gwen inspiring or if weigh down works. god works. god inspires and god made man healthy, lovely, and satisfied. that is what i have found from weigh-down. i was not looking at it as another diet program, but as a thought that would free me from the world’s burden and entrapment of food and body image. i didn’t have a conflict with c.s. and the bible approach gwen takes.
