Go for the glimpse

One of the most liberating aspects of Christian Science comes from understanding its fundamental statement of truth that life is purely spiritual, neither in nor of matter.
At first glance, a comprehension of this reality may seem hard to attain. The human mind argues that matter looks very real and feels very real. But spiritual sense confirms the contrary.
In spiritual sense, matter does disappear, and the realities of spiritual life and love become tangible, concrete, realities that generate profound peace of mind, and lead to health and healing in the human body and experience. So, it definitely pays to catch the higher view of existence where Spirit is all and matter is naught.
And the neat part is that you don’t have to figure it all out at once. You don’t have to demonstrate total spiritual consciousness in one fell swoop, where you ascend and never entertain material sense again. Spiritual mindedness is demonstrated in degrees.
Just a glimpse of spiritual reality in a moment of time is sufficient to bring profound transformation for the better. I see it happen frequently.
Recently, one of my children suffered an injury during a sporting event. I received a distress text asking for help. I prayed and caught a glimpse of their uninjured perfect spiritual self. I never heard anything back. Finally, I asked a couple of days later if they were okay. The injury had disappeared so rapidly, they forgot all about it.
So, don’t ever get discouraged about attaining adequate spiritual mindedness. You don’t have to have the mental accomplishments of Jesus, or even an apostle, to be healed. Just a glimpse of truth will suffice. Just one little glimpse can make all the difference. Go for the glimpse!
By Mary Baker Eddy:

“Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual, — neither in nor of matter, — and the body will then utter no complaints” (Science and Health, p. 14).

  1. This “glimpse” of which you speak attests to that effortless quality of truth we know “As adherents of truth…”, and its unavoidable alterative effect on error. Sort of like the effect of a published Microsoft or Apple security update we download into our various devices…. All our files are updated at once, but only those files which are in error to begin with. Then we can go on, secure in the knowledge that we are protected from on-high against all that would presume to threaten us.

  2. Thanks, Evan!

Your posts frequently turn my days around for the better, and I deeply hope to be blessing others in such a wonderful, inspiring way, too some day 🙂

  3. just a glimpse brings such peace! thank you again! for writing this so we easily understand, and are more sure in our progress.

  4. wow, thanks so much. What you say is so true about getting just a glimpse. I once had an immediate healing of a very painful foot injury that had been bothering me for days. I had been hopping around on one foot it was so bad. I wasn’t practicing CS at the time but I was so desperate that I called a CS practitioner. By the time I hung up the phone the pain had completely disappeared. The practitioner had helped me to get a glimpse of what was really true about me. I always remember that healing when I have any doubt about the effectiveness of spiritual healing.

  5. Dear Evan; I love this blog about having a glimpse of the Truth. I love it because it brings out the thought that we don’t have to feel pressured to demonstrate every single Truth, that every glimpse helps us move forward, never backward. That our achievements stay with us and we are always achieving.

  6. Although I read your up lifting message every day, I seldom take the time to comment. Today’s “glimpse” was so very meaningful to me that I wanted to let you know how your words hit home.

Yesterday I received some disturbing health news and while I tried in vain to lift my consciousness all I could get were glimpses. I didn’t think that glimpses would be enough to turn this situation around but it was all I could manifest at the time. To my surprise, just as I finished my meditations I received a phone call saying that the news I had been given was a mistake. And today I received the gift of your words reminding me that even the tiniest awareness of our true nature is significant.
    Thank you Evan!

  7. This is so helpful, thank you Evan for your uplifting glimpses of an effective attitude towards healing!
Also I am grateful for the comments.
This morning I woke up with the parable of the prodigal son’s father who never knew a tinge of ‘death’ or misbehavior about his son and was so delighted even when his son was still a far way off but was returning towards home. And next to it came “Lo, He sent His Word and healed them, Still that Word of God is here. Still its tender healing message Speaks to every listening ear. Truth divine, that overcometh All the ills that seem to be. In our hearts Thy Word abiding, We may know Thee and be free.” [CS Hymnal 175] Then I felt uplifted, assured, that I am on the right path as I pondered more on these ideas.i
