proverb
Definitions of adage. noun. a condensed but memorable saying embodying some important fact of experience that is taken as true by many people. synonyms: byword, proverb, saw. expression, locution, saying.
Dear Uta
Cambridge dictionary defines Adage as “a wise saying e.g. He remembered the old adage “Look before you leap”.
Merriam Webster says ” a saying often in metaphorical form that typically embodies a common observation, e.g. She reminded him of the adage: “A penny saved is a penny earned.”
Google translate says the German is Sprichwort but I don’t speak German so don’t know if this is correct.
I expect that in the German language you will have many “adages”.!
May I say I think your English is excellent
Love Rubi
Dear Rubi,
thank you very much for your kindness. I love English, and it’s my hobby from schooltime on, and I also used it in an im- and export office long time ago. And as an au-pair I lived in an English family for abt. one year.
Yes, the German word “Sprichwort” hits it to the point.
And thank you very much, dear Jennine for your kind explanation of the word “Adage.” It’s always interesting to learn a new saying!”
The first thing that came to mind with this sweet message today, is, from
Hymn # 82,
“God is working His purpose out
As year succeeds to year … ”
God knows what He is doing and often, plans that we may have mortally are
not what God has in Mind, which is always Better than our measly little plans.
Patience is the key .. and in the meantime, Trust and Faith and holding fast to
the Knowing that God IS working His purpose out, even if it may seem like
things are dormant or at a standstill. God knows what He is doing.
The drawing (nice) brings back memories of my Grandparent’s place. It was
many years ago, but was so warm and comforting as a child. A lovely reminder.
I am reminded, too, of God working out a need I had when my car needed
replacement. My mechanic had said it wasn’t safe to drive (and at any time,
might leave me stranded), so I trusted in God’s care and found a local car dealer,
online, who brought a new (different) car right to the house and drove the old
car away. I was unaware of the size of this SUV, until he brought it and it seemed
Huge and I never would have chosen it, had I known. But it turned out to be
perfect for the time when I moved and it fit a lot of things in, that a smaller car
would not have. Shortly after, it needed work done on it and a friend’s daughter
needed a car and his brother was a mechanic, so it worked out perfectly for them
(and me) … Again, proving that God Knows what we need and provides for us,
in ways that we may not even realize, at the time.
In reading this I experience deep feelings of comfort but also deep feelings of motivation. That’s a big result from one short adage! Thank you for sharing it today, Evan.
“In our waiting, God is working.” It’s good to be reminded that as long as we’re turning to God sincerely, dropping any human outlining or self will, we can know that God is working for our highest good and we will see it on the “external plane” in the right way at the right time.
Mrs. Eddy said, “If you wait [trust], never doubting, you will have all you need every moment.” (Misc Writngs p. 307)
Herewith I thank you specially, dear Evan, for this very comforting and true adage. It comes quite near to what CS says, namely “before we ask, God already knows what we need” and the 23rd Psalms says: “divine Love is my shepherd, we shall not want…” that actually also means “…we have all we need.”
– thank you dear God – ❤️
Lovely to see your comment today, dear Uta. And how peaceful your
message and how comforting with mention of the 23rd Psalm … also,
“‘God is Love’. More than this we cannot ask, higher we cannot look,
farther we cannot go.” – (Mrs. Eddy – Science and Health pg.6: 17).
Yes, Thank you, dear God !!!
Dear Carol, just like to tell you, how I end the passage in SH Page 6 : 17 :
God is Love – more than this we cannot ask, higher we cannot look, farther we cannot go. – more we do not need. These last 5 words I like to ad to this sentence by Mrs. Eddy, always when I read it.
Thanks for your kind words. I always enjoy reading your so inspiring and loving comments! ❤️
Thank you very much Evan. I love that rural drawing!
Such a comforting and powerful divine truth!
What does the word “adage” mean? Can’t find it in my dictionary. Would be grateful if somebody could explain it! ❤️

Sorry Didn’t see your reply to Uta as I was busy typing.
Hi, Uta,
My Webster’s seventh Collegiate Dictionary shows for adage: “a saying embodying common observation often in metaphorical form.”
David C.
Hallo Uta, adage heisst Sprichwort/Weisheit
Such a darling statement ! I can see it as an embroidery sampler on a wall. Simple and powerful.
