Finding friends

July 21, 2026 | 25 comments

If you’re looking for more friends in your life, alas, there is a solution.  All hope is not lost!

The book of Proverbs has wisdom to share in its statement, “A man who has friends must himself be friendly” (Pro. 18:24).

There is no limit to how kind, generous, thoughtful, and unselfish we can be toward others.  Not in seeking something in return, but because that’s the way God made us to be.

And interestingly, the unconditional kindness and buoyant goodwill we show toward others has a way of coming right back at us, and sometimes in the most unexpected ways.  A life of giving turns into a life of receiving.

Friendliness begets friendliness.

The first friend we need to find, though, is within.  The rest follows.

  1. I had a thought come into my life when I was creating a series of signatures for my Outlook email program that is much like your today’s post. “If you want more love in your life, be more loving.” Thank you for your post, Evan.

  2. I agree with the above. In my experience I do give out, support, listen hove love and do prayers of healing for my friends but it becomes one way friendships. So alot of friends lean on me with their issues etc but are not interested in me or mine.

  3. Yes that definitely does appear to happen sometimes, however we have to keep on loving because any alternative is less rewarding and can leave us feeling unhappy and shortchanged. The loving benefits us too, so it is not one sided. xx

    1. thank you Caz for your comment.. yes I can still love and give etc, but I now do not see them as my friends but still love them though.x

      1. Totally agree Lynn. Some people end up not being the friends we thought they were….and that’s ok. ❣️

    2. Many of my friends have passed on in recent years, although their
friendship lives on in the hearts of those who love them and they
have loved. Divine Love is not dependent on mortal, material
visions of human sense. Sometimes it seems we try and try to
be loving friends, but there seems to be a barrier of understanding
and no matter how many times we try to share our feelings, it does
not seem to get through and it seems they are not responsive to
what we say. At times like this, where the material seems to overrule
the spiritual, we need to continue to love them as God does. God IS
Love. God’s creation IS spiritual and loving, not dependent on anything
      mortal.

  4. Dear SpiritViewers
I’m posting this today in grateful thanks for Evan’s glorious healing blog “Rebuke Disease” posted yesterday; for DD’s query and your many loving, helpful, healing ideas. I am grateful beyond words to you all.
I am always grateful for SpiritView and because of current seeming challenges, yesterday was particularly inspiring.
    Thank you

  5. Thanks for that post. This morning I posted something along the same line from Pierre Pradervand’s book 365 Blessings:
“I bless myself in my ability to see that every act of kindness is also a gift to myself, broadening my heart’s outreach, often softening the use of my time, awakening my awareness, filling me with quiet joy and above all teaching me to see myself in my sister or brother. For truly we shall love our neighbors only as we recognize them to be the reflected image of who we are.”

  6. In the Glossary of S Science and Health Gethesamane love meeting no response, but still remaining love. Also chapter on Marriage “Human affection is not poured forth vainly, even though it meets no return. Love enriches the nature, enlarging; purifying, and elevating it
Line from hymn “wait and love more” and also from the book “The greatest thing in the world” God is Love and love is the fulfilling of the law.
God’s love does the loving, the Christ Love that heals
Thank you for this topic today. What the world needs now is love; sweet love.
Question can I love more? Answer yes.
Remember God is my best my ever friend from hymn “o Lord I would delight in thee.”

  7. Dear Evan and SV friends, thank you all for your beautiful comments and encouragement to love more. Yes, the world needs it and how lovely that we can do our part to practice loving more each day. Today the smoke from Canadian fires has cleared out of our area for now – it feels like a big cleansing has gone on with healing rains last night. It reminds me of how loving, Christlike thinking helps to clear the mental atmosphere of wherever we live and helps us to see and think more clearly. Love to all.

  8. Thank you Evan. Your post made me think of this paragraph from S&H:

Would existence without personal friends be to you a blank? Then the time will come when you will be solitary, left without sympathy; but this seeming vacuum is already filled with divine Love. When this hour of development comes, even if you cling to a sense of personal joys, spiritual Love will force you to accept what best promotes your growth. Friends will betray and enemies will slander, until the lesson is sufficient to exalt you; for “man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.” The author has experienced the foregoing prophecy and its blessings. Thus He teaches mortals to lay down their fleshliness and gain spirituality. This is done through self-abnegation. Universal Love is the divine way in Christian Science.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 266:6)

I went through many years of wanting a wife and just never seemed to meet the right person, or I was too shy/socially awkward to initiate a relationship. After years of praying about that, I finally reached a point one night when praying of just feeling the presence of Love around me very strongly. It was almost like a physical presence it was so evident to me. At that point I realized I was already complete in God and didn’t need a wife to be complete and I could be happy all on my own. About 2-4 weeks later a nice woman I worked with asked me to go to a baseball game with her and another couple. Tomorrow will be our 26th anniversary together. So sometimes, what you may need to realize to find friends is that God, Love, is already your best friend and is providing your every need. And realizing that will naturally manifest itself in your human experience to provide whatever you need in terms of friends or anything else.

  11. I was quite shy when I was growing up. A friend of my parents talked to me at one of their parties. He was very kind and shared this advice. He said shyness is selfishness. You are not letting others know you. I changed my habits. I learned to initiate conversations. It has changed my life. Now I freely express love to all I meet and they freely share with me.

    1. Hello (another) Carol, I have often felt the same way as you have mentioned.
I have surprised myself, sometimes, in now, speaking up and also initiating
conversations where before, I would not have. I have had and have now, what
are called fair weather friends, who, if all is going well and they are very busy
with their lives (understandably) – I do not hear from, unless I initiate. But
have realized that they have their own families and are busy. It used to
bother me, that I would only hear from them when they “wanted something”,
but in Christian Science, we are taught to love unconditionally, which I try
to do, regardless. God, Love, truly is our Best Friend.

  12. To the comment of others leaning on your kind actions. Yes as others pointed out another who had that same experience. His name was Jesus who was truly reflecting his father.
I look at it as others being attracted to the qualities of God we are expressing and so I am grateful to be that transparency.
Much love to you. You are God’s expression of un- selfed reflection.
