What are you contributing?

August 26, 2015 | 12 comments

I often ask myself, “Am I doing something with my life that will make a difference in the long run?”

It seems too easy to get caught up into selfish activity that makes you feel good in the moment you’re in and may benefit yourself, but does not benefit anyone else.

Is this the route to heaven? I don’t think so.

The two great commandments from the Bible are, to love God with your whole heart, and to love your neighbor as yourself. True love lived always includes your neighbor. It can never be selfish or exclusive.

So, what are you doing that makes life better for your neighbor?

Here’s a story of a man who put selfish interest aside to better the lives of those around him. The first four minutes of the video tell his story. The remaining time in the video is a promotion for the sponsor of the video. But I think you’ll like the story. It’s one of great personal sacrifice for the public good.

  1. This has always been a cloudy topic for me. I think that if I do not add to madness swirling around me and express good whenever possibly, just a kind word or acknowledgment of our oneness that is enough.

  2. Like Martin Luther King Jr. he also had a dream. A true testament to human endeavor. Since lacking a “Spiritual Sense” myself a verse from Misc Writings by M.B.Eddy has become a favorite of mine..”In the desolation of human understanding, divine Love hears and answers the human call for help; and the voice of Truth utters the divine verities of being which delivers mortals out of the depths of ignorance and vice” Page 81 verses 25-29 ..

  3. I think that the true human desire is to contribute that which makes man happy, not miserable. Even the worst Dictators think that what they do would make happiness. This attitude is just mortal mindedness to confuse man of a false definition of happiness. To create a smile on a child, a glee on a senior citizen face without pay is what God put us here to contribute.

  4. Beautiful Evan, thank you for sharing this. He was motivated by good so heard the message that blessed so many, including himself. That is happiness and satisfaction, to be so at one with God that you hear “this is the way, walk ye in it …”and to be only motivated by good. Too bad he did not have a village help him but that didn’t matter, he knew it was the right thing to do ….

  5. Thank you, Evan. I love the two great commandments to which you have referred. Nearly forty years ago I was acting supervisor and the auditor working for me stated upon reading my evaluation of his past year’s work, that “I was the only one to have treated him right.” I knew what he meant for I had worked along side him for many years previously. Now, thirty years later I often think of him for sharing his feeling. He passed away shortly afterward. I, too, had had the same bosses as he. It is quite easy to make a good difference in the world. And having done so, it leaves one with a lasting good feeling. Nadine, you said it just right. Thank you. Thank you also, Dashrath.

  6. A modern-day Nehemiah, prevailing in his great work through courage, persistence, and love. What cannot we do when we are thus motivated!

  7. I would say the mountains of wrong thinking that you are breaking through with your daily blog is proof of a life well lived, Evan.

  8. Your ability to continue our spiritual thoughts are rewarding by examples you have chosen.
Another testimony to your blogs and the healing we receive.

    Thanks!
