An article in the New York Times titled, “Studies show little benefit in supplements,” reported,
“Americans spend more than $30 billion a year on dietary supplements — vitamins, minerals and herbal products, among others — many of which are unnecessary or of doubtful benefit to those taking them. That comes to about $100 a year for every man, woman and child for substances that are often of questionable value.”
The article compares supplements and vitamins to placebos and mentions major studies that confirm the same.
The fact that millions of Americans are willing to consume a product that brings no benefit, except profit to the makers of the supplements, could be a sign that people are desperate for ways to promote their health. Christian Science has a better way. Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer of Christian Science wrote, “The time for thinkers has come” Science and Health, p. vii.
As Jesus Christ demonstrated beyond cavil, true health is spiritual. It comes directly from God and is found through prayer and spiritual understanding.
Yes, as humans, we need to eat and live responsibly, but the wisest human actions are always guided by direction coming from the one Mind of God that knows best.
“Know the truth, and the truth will set you free” John 8:32, Jesus instructed to those looking for health.
Spiritual truth is the most effective “vitamin” available. Spiritual love coming from God is stronger than any supplement from a store to bring enduring calm, peace, and harmony.
What you gain from God stays with you forever. There are no ups and downs or material maintenance programs necessary to keep the peace and calm that comes from knowing God’s love and care for you.
You won’t need to reach for a bottle of placebos any longer to assure yourself that you have health. You will find it within, within what you already have from God and is spiritually yours forever.
Evan, I love your statement that what we have from God is ours forever with no material maintenance programs necessary to keep His love and care for us. We just need to acknowledge what we already have – God’s spiritual love which is all encompassing. He directs our activities. Thank you.
Thank you, Evan, for this timely post. I’m profoundly grateful for the gift of Christian Science and the true freedom it brings. I pray to be a faithful example of its way of thinking and living and to include everyone and everything in its promised blessings of health and freedom. Many thanks for the blessings of SpiritView and all your healing work for Church, embracing all.
I have read (in Consumer’s Reports and elsewhere) that some supplements are deemed by researchers to be humanly harmful as well as unneeded. Thanks for your “Alertness to duty.”
thank you very much Evan, for today`s post and the assurance you give us therein that alone our loving Father-Mother-God bestows us with whatever we need. In Mis. MBE states that God knows what we need, even before we know that we do need that, and He meets the need in abundance.
Since years I cook myself what I like, which often is a healthy farmers meal.
And we know that God feeds and clothes us – am greatful to learn that in Christian Science!
At a time when I had little money for any thing my can of brewers yeast kept me nourished but then I looked for something to truly feed me and all was added.
I have a question, Evan, when Christian Science isn’t working, is it against Christian Science to take a vitamin supplement any more than to eat healthy foods?
Hi Lori,
Christian Science simply explains the laws of God that are always working on our behalf. Like gravity is always holding you feet to the ground whether you know it or not, God is always blessing us with everything we need to stay healthy. The more we understand these laws and practice them, the more we see we don’t need supplements to what God has already provided.
There is a lot of “thought taking” by chemists, and supplement creators, etc., that go into the making of vitamin supplements. There’s a lot more mortal mind thought taking by the human mind to produce a specific material outcome, than from a carrot that comes out of the ground per nature. When you take a vitamin, you are mentally taking in all the thought-taking behind it. I’d rather opt for more of the influence of the divine Mind and less mortal mind.
Thank you for the thoughtful answer, Evan. And the great post.
Thank you so very much now for your so clear explanation, dear Evan.
Yes, its very important to stick completely to pure Christian Science, i.e. to be influenced totally by divine Mind.
I tell you this, because in the 8 o`clock pm news here in Hamburg, they just also said that Americans have very big problems with drugs.
So if we stick fully to God`s laws, that says God is caring for us and gives us everything we need to be healthy and happy, as Evan just said, we are on the spiritually safe side; and we don`t need the tiniest Vitamin pil.
Thanks, Evan! This subject has cropped up in our family, and I’m so grateful you addressed it. It confirms my feelings exactly so I know I’m on the right path. Listening for God’s direction and knowing He is taking care of us guides us to do the proper thing humanly. Thanks so much!
Thank you Evan! Two things struck me when reading this:
1) The word “Supplement” I found to be defined as “something that completes or enhances something else when added to it”. In Christian Science we are taught to always be alert to “false beliefs” that if entertained would hide, in consciousness, the Christ, Truth. So the belief that we are “incomplete” or that “something needs to be added to us to make us complete” is a false belief we can all realize has no place in a consciousness that is a reflection of God who is “completely complete”. 🙂
2) Like Libby’s comment brings out, the statement from your blog about “…keep the peace and calm that comes from knowing God’s love and care for you.” is something I’ve really been focusing on in my own prayerful work lately. It’s one thing to know the truth. But complementing that “truth knowing” with knowing how much God loves and cares for all of us is so refreshing and makes it easier to continue to hold to the truth. The understanding of God’s love for us eliminates fear and allows us to trust His care.
Thanks again Evan…and Thanks to EVERYONE for your comments.
Thanks Evan and everyone who has commented to my reply.
