"Advice for Healers"

There is a terrific collection of letters written by Mary Baker Eddy, and a few of her students, that the Mary Baker Eddy Library has collected and made for sale, called “Advice for Healers.”
I just learned about it a couple of months ago. It comes in three volumes. I ordered the three volume set for $75, shipping included, and it is worth every penny and more.
Many of the letters are Mrs. Eddy at her practical finest. They are often written “In haste,” as she signed several of them, but the wisdom, insight and practical advice she gives students in these letters is often profoundly thought-provoking and enlightening.
I especially appreciated her persistent admonition, expressed in her later year letters, in telling students to quit believing that matter is real. She strikes to the heart of the error that disease has a foundation by pointing out that if you believe matter is real you’re liable to believe disease is real too. She orders her students to wake up from the mesmerism, to quit believing the lie of matter, that disease has a cause or a medium, and accept the omnipresence of Spirit. It is refreshing to read.
You can contact the Research Room of the Mary Baker Eddy Library at 617-450-7218, or email at [email protected] to inquire about obtaining your own copy.
If $75 is a stretch for your budget, order the third volume.  The three volumes are compiled chronologically, with the first being letters from her early years, the third is letters from her last years.
Some quotes that caught my attention:
In a letter to Alfred Farlow,
“Don’t let your mind out into the realm of mind, I find there is too much magnetism in mortal minds to do this safely.” (Vol. I, p. 70)
Here’s a thought-provoking quote from a letter to Alfred and Anna Baker,
“There are but two statements of all that is 1st Divine Love 2nd animal magnetism.
“If I heal the sick that is the work of Love, if I fail in healing that is animal magnetism…” (Vol. III, p. 9).
Vol. III, p. 18:
“When visiting a patient that is very low never say, “There is no death.” Say rather “All is Life and Life is eternal.”  To say, “there is no death” is to call up the image of the very thing they fear. And their fear may produce the effect they dread.”
Vol. III p. 62:
“A society that can pay over a million of dollars for a fashionable church edifice ought to drop the name of C.S. or be ready to help our cause in other directions…it needs aught else but good healers.”

  2. Wonderful, Evan. You are so generous. I was surprised to read that you have just discovered these letters and no wonder, you are too busy healing and being a great missionary lecturer! Thanks so much for your exuberant and caring love for mankind…and us wannabee healers.

  3. Evan, Thank you for all the inspiration you share. I look forward to your e-mail every day! I was wondering is Advice for Healers the same as the two chapters in the Amplified Edition of Mary Baker Eddy Christian Healer? Thanks again for all that you share!!

  4. I believe some of the letters published in “Advice to Healers,” is in the Amplified Edition of MBE Christian Healer. These volumes are about 100 pages each, printed on both sides. So much more.
