Avoid contagion of popular belief

December 11, 2020 | 21 comments

With millions of people fearing a virus, it’s wise to watch and be sure that other people’s fears are not becoming our fears.

Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “We weep because others weep, we yawn because they yawn, and we have smallpox because others have it; but mortal mind, not matter, contains and carries the infection. When this mental contagion is understood, we shall be more careful of our mental conditions, and we shall avoid loquacious tattling about disease, as we would avoid advocating crime. Neither sympathy nor society should ever tempt us to cherish error in any form, and certainly we should not be error’s advocate” (Science and Health, p. 153).

With the news media constantly sending fear and reports of disease through the airwaves, it takes some extra metaphysical effort to be sure those fears and reports do not become our fear and experience. This is possible when we stay clear on the omnipotence and omnipresence of God.

Fear is not an influence. It has no mind, power, or sway to make us afraid. It is an empty threat that never changes the truth of our being with God.

So, side with God, stay conscious of spiritual reality, and stay out of popular belief. It’s a healthier happier place to be, and a way to stay well.

  1. As well as he virus contagion we also have the contagion of fear that is worse. Thanks Evan for this reminder.

  2. Mrs. Eddy referred to disease as the subjective state of erring mortal mind and “—that pure Mind is the truth of being that subjugated and destroys and suppositional or elementary opposite to Him who is All.” Mis. 260:14f.
This passage encourages me to stay with God’s allness in order to keep fear at bay.
Evan thanks for your encouragement “side with God”.

    1. Thanks John, love that quote from Misc Writings, powerful.

Great to remember that NOTHING can change the facts of Being, and those facts are good and they include the truth about everyone, as they are from the one divine Mind. Let’s Stay with God, Stick with God and Stand with God! Love to all!

  3. It’s a job and it must be done. That is to offset the continual bombardment of this (un) common belief.
When celebrations are canceled, friends come masked amd keep a distance, they are told “Only love is communicable.” I tell them to look for Evans continually available reflections on SpiritView.
Then they are prayed for by knowing that there’s no place in Immortal Mind to entertain fearful beliefs. Mortal mind isn’t their mind, Divine Mind is their mind and everyones mind.

    Gods work is done.

  4. I love this in S & H..pg 495:5-14. Part of it….”When the illusion of sickness (fear/virus) or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea…..”
Thank you Evan and all who continue praying for all.

  5. O may we be still and seek Him,
    Seek with consecration whole,
Listening thus to hear the message,
Far from sense and hid in Soul.

He hath promised we shall find Him,
    Love divine its promise keeps;
God is watching with the watchful,
God is Life that never sleeps.

If we pray to Him in secret,
Lift to Him the heart’s desire,
We shall find our earthly longings
All made pure by Love’s pure fire.

    Then upon the precious metal
    God’s own image will appear,
    Faithfully to Him reflected,
    One with Him forever near.
    [Hymn 237]

  6. Thank you Shelley for the link above; thank you Evan for spreading good, healthy, spiritually scientific ideas; and thank you to all the SpiritView community for your uplifting comments. Grateful

  7. It’s Saturday here in the U.K. as I think more deeply about this Blog.
Every time we go out, shop or mix in public we have to wear masks, and this requirement tries to invade our consciousnesses as does the media etc. It came to me today as I got to my destination the following verse from Eph. 6.
‘ Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may withstand the wiles of the devil!’
This put the material mask right back where it should be. Instead of a reminder of contagion …a reminder to recognise we are clad in the panoply of Divine Love, protecting us permanently, keeping us safe eternally. Thank you Evan. Direction needed and direction taken.❣️

‘‘Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may withstand the wiles of the devil!’

  8. So wonderfully inspiring to read this blog, including all the comments shared! Thank you, Angie, for reminding me of lovely hymn lyrics that are especially poignant to me at this time with a family situation in need of harmony and progress for all involved, including me, and reading and praying these words brought tears to my eyes and much-needed healing and forgiveness to my heart today! God bless all who share and read this, indeed,
“God bless us, Everyone” to quote Tiny Tim.

  9. Oh, no, do you not have faith in facts? Do CS really believe COVID is a conspiracy? That God protects from germs – virus? Do you bother to wash your hands post using the washroom? Please help me to understand?

    With kind curiosity,

    Barrie-Lee C

    1. Yes, I definitely have faith in the facts! But what you call “facts” are likely not the last word on what is truth.

CS does not believe Covid is a conspiracy. It’s a condition millions of people are currently believing and experiencing because of that belief. But as Jesus Christ proved, germs can be neutralized and rendered harmless with prayer. That’s what CS believes in. Not to ignore or pretend that germs aren’t real, but to render them harmless through a proper understanding of spiritual reality.

Yes God absolutely can protect us from germs. But it takes an understanding of God to make that demonstration. So, a student of CS stays humble and demonstrates what he is ready and able to demonstrate. I wash my hands and keep them clean. But I also pray to know its Truth that gives me the best protection.
